Young restaurant owner Zinos (Adam Bousdoukos) is down on his luck. His girlfriend Nadine (Pheline Roggan) has moved to Shanghai, his Soul Kitchen customers are boycotting the new gourmet chef, and he's having back trouble! Things start looking up when the hip crowd embraces his revamped culinary concept, but that doesn't mend Zinos's broken heart. He decides to fly to China for Nadine, leaving the restaurant in the hands of his unreliable ex-con brother Illias (Moritz Bleibtreu). Both decisions turn out to be disastrous: Illias gambles away the restaurant to a shady real estate agent and Nadine has found a new lover! But brothers Zinos and Illias might still have one last chance to get Soul Kitchen back if they can stop arguing and work together as a team.

  • It was OK. Gentle pleasant enough German comedy.

  • Something that spoils situation comedy is overacting, and this had it in spades. I thought the director never quite knew which way to go with this movie and eventually it went the wrong way. I had this feeling all the way through that the mentality was "let's copy what the Americans do, that's always funny". But it wasn't.

  • German film with English subtitles, contains some extra feature. Not as good as expected, and not heart warming, not uplifting (as I hoped it to be, the title "Soul Kitchen" is just a name, do not have big hopes for the movie bases on that name..). Not funny enough for a comedy and not dramatic enough for a drama. Rather ordinary story line; mildly happy ending, etc. Also not much about food itself or food preparation. Rather it deals with health problems, tax office problems, girlfriend problem, brother's problems, con man trying to buy the place, tenant not paying his rent, trying to maintain resilience in the face of numerous but quite ordinary life obstacles etc.

  • Zany movie but unexpectedly good

  • A working man’s caf? becomes hip after it gets an experienced chef. Fluffy comedy drama that presses all the right buttons when it comes to this sort of thing.
