In this hilarious, lighthearted comedy from acclaimed writer/director Billy Wilder and screenwriter I.A.L. Diamond (The Apartment), a wealthy American discovers romance and the meaning of avanti while in Italy. Nominated for six Golden Globes – winning one – this "honey of a film" (Boxoffice) is as delightful as the Wilder/Diamond/Jack Lemmon classics Some Like It Hot and Irma La Douce!

American businessman Wendell Armbruster (Lemmon) is summoned to Italy after a car accident claims the lives of his father and his father’s secret mistress! And when the mistress’ daughter (Juliet Mills) also arrives – and the bodies of both of their parents disappear – the two instant foes are brought together in a baffling mystery…and an affair of the heart!

  • Jack Lemmon stars again for Billy Wilder as a harried corporate exec who discovers that his suddenly deceased father had been having a regular summer affair with Juliet Mills's mother (working class Brits). Although a little dated, the movie can easily charm you -- and this may be the magic of the Italian locations, the romantic music, and the typically wry wit. Imdb tells me that Juliet Mills starred in a short-lived sitcom called Nanny and the Professor which rings some distant bells. But I don't think she was nude in that (nor was Jack Lemmon). Probably this is a tad bit too long, but it does move along at a fair clip. Those looking for the real bite of earlier Wilder will likely find he's gone soft, but there are still a few funny cross-cultural barbs.

  • Delightful. They don't make them like they used to.

  • Nice little movie with humour romance and comedy. Lovely scenery in Italy as well. Anyone who loves the old movies would love this one.
