Bathed in lurid Technicolour, melodrama maestro Douglas Sirk's Written on the Wind is the stylishly debauched tale of a Texas oil magnate brought down by the excesses of his spoiled offspring. Features a all-star quartet that includes Robert Stack as a pistol-packin' alcoholic playboy; Lauren Bacall as his long-suffering wife; Rock Hudson as his earthy best friend; and Dorothy Malone (who won a Best Supporting Actress Oscar® for her performance) as his nymphomaniac sister.

Superior hyper real melodrama where emotions are the sole driver of individual actions no matter the consequences. What makes this and other Sirk movies so enjoyable is the fact that the social/moral issues that they depicted were shocking and controversial at the time. How times have changed.

Melodrama at its most melodramatic. Amazing performances, an influential film (cf Far From Heaven which has some shot for shot steals/homages), some of the worst hair and make-up, especially in the close-ups, and a vast gay subtext. The early arch dialogue gives way to a very exciting pair of climaxes.
