Alex is a 16-year-old novice skateboarder, suffering from a broken household, clingy girlfriend and piling schoolwork. However, when he decides to visit the notorious Paranoid Park by himself, he becomes involved in a horrfic accident that he is not fully able to comprehend. Told in a non-linear narrative, Paranoid Park is another entry into Gus Van Sant's exploration of teen alienation, and death.

I loved this movie. Fantastic to see something completely different from the Hollywood formulaic movies. I thought it really captured those intense feelings of alienation and confusion and also shows the lovely freedom of movement and thought while skateboarding. If you aren't addicted to Hollywood pap I would strongly recommend it.

Paranoid Park is a visually beautiful film with the dream-like cinematography characteristic of Gus Van Sant. The film explores the experience of adolescence and of senseless tragedy, returning to the themes of Van Sant's earlier film, Elephant. The story is told non-chronologically, the dialogue is sparse, and the "action" within each scene looks as though it is taking place in real-time (i.e. it is very slow). Apparently, Elephant was filmed in actual real-time. In my opinion, this is not as strong a film as Elephant, though it is still well worth watching.
