Excellent balanced view of a major WW2 battle from the Japanese perspective and very well dramatised by Clint Eastwood. Believable characters engage and hold the viewer's attention and sympathy. Quite different from "Flags of our Fathers", and a better movie as well. Highly recommended.

I strongly support the other favourable reviews of this movie. It skillfully avoided overdramatisation and was notable for the wonderful acting of the whole cast. I highly recommend it for anyone wanting serious drama rather than the juvenile hyperkinetic action movies that currently dominate American cinema.

Brilliant fantasy take on Orwell's "1984". The scariest thing is that Terry Gilliam and Tom Stoppard's cinematic vision filmed a quarter of a century ago is more like a black comedy of 21st century reality - September 11, Guantanamo Bay, Iraq and even billing illegal immigrants in Australia for their incarceration costs! The world has caught up with this movie in a very unsettling way.
