Jehane Noujaim’s compelling film is a useful companion piece to Fahrenheit 9/11. It’s a documentary that looks at media coverage of the war in Iraq mainly from the point of view of the Arab TV service, Al Jazeera. The manipulation of news by the American Control Centre is the film’s main concern, but it’s also fascinating to see American military spokesman Lt. Josh Rushing apparently beginning to realise – as we watch – the enormity of what’s happening and the lies that are being told. The death of an Al Jazeera correspondent when his office in a Baghdad hotel is fired on by American tanks is also a crucial moment in this disturbing, concisely made, very timely documentary.
