This deliriously entertaining melodrama, made by Douglas Sirk in 1956, stars Rock Hudson as the loyal friend and colleague of unstable Texas oil heir Robert Stack. The film begins with a killing (although we don’t see the details) and then flashes back to tell the story of Stack’s relationship with New York designer Lauren Bacall, a woman Hudson also loves. Pivotal to the drama is Stack’s unstable sister, a role which won Dorothy Malone a Best Supporting Actress Oscar. The film is shot in deliberately lurid colours and revels in the excesses of its symbolism and imagery. It’s tremendous fun.
