Eastern Europe - a city torn by civil war - Present Day Jonah Ludovic writes in his journal. His poetry softening the cynical observations of a man living a self imposed penance. Wherever he came from and whoever he was, Ludovic is now alone, silenced by a crime unknown. Ludovic can hear the shelling of an imposing civil war. He can see the flashes of fire destroying a city that once was his home. He doesn't move. He just writes. As daybreak arrives, the shelling has ceased. Ludovic makes his way to his job as a custodian at the local zoo. He is met at the gates by the fleeing staff. Ludovic chooses to remain behind, he has no where to go.

DEPRESSING
says
A sad, depressing movie that was lacking authenticity for me. The idea of a zoo suffering from the effects of war was taken from the war-torn Iraq, not from the conflicts of the Eastern Europe. Some landscape features in the film looked like Prague, did not fit the story. Also the costumes and the cars did not exactly fit, somehow from historical viewpoint it did not feel completely right. Overall it was sad but so what, we all knew that wars are a nasty business, didn't we?... The DVD contains the extra feature ("the making of"), not very interesting either. Two stars only from me.

War in Europe is Hell...and war between ethnic central europeans plain insanity..this sets the tone for a glorious movie with threads of real life stories woven into the plot...a feel of how minorities are treated in time of war...a 9/10 movie..a real gem

This is a very good film and well worth watching. Whilst the background to the story is depressing the film focuses on the humanity of the characters and a smaller story within the wider picture. It works, except maybe for the random death at the end. The film didn't need this to convey the message. This is a story of people and not just the Balkans.
