Fascinating story and great cast. The kids were wonderful and Jennifer Lawrence held it all together beautifully. All of the support staff looked and sounded as if they came out of the hills to make the movie. Interesting that the world financial crisis has spread it's affects so far that these hillbillies turned to drugs to make their living. By the look of the toys and extras in and around the houses there was, at times, extra money to spend of luxuries, though they were apparently not valued, just as maintenance was not kept up. This was a very interesting, if not a bit scary, story of a world we never see.
Slow but ok and a bit touching
Quiet an interesting movie. No action but great performances and a look into a community that many of us would not be familiar with and find quiet frightening
Courageous in every aspect. I look at the avg teen and hardly ever inspired by character as displayed in this movie. Very raw story line and scenes keep you well entertained.
A stark and realistic depiction of life (and low life) in the Ozarks. "Arma goana hurnt surm squrls". Yep, subtitles would have helped at times. Jennifer Lawrence is a standout as the young teenager who goes searching for her father in order to keep the family together in the family home. No punches pulled here, this gritty drama kept me interested and impressed right up to the last Banjo twang!
Good story line and enjoyable.
Good acting by young cast.
Excellent casting and script maintain engagement in a grim scenario.
The scenes and atmospere created from them were very realistic.
Nasty goings on in hillbilly territory when a father vanishes and his daughter seeks the truth. Atmospheric thriller with ominous overtones. 3.5 stars
Boring, no story, too much mumbling. Painful to watch. Don't waste to your time.
A bit slow, depressing/miserable scenery. If Jennifer wasn't in it, I wouldn't have bothered watching.
Sharply focussed thriller drama with a clear set-up and an admirable, courageous heroine. Amazing performances from non-actors.
great movie!!! i can see why jennifer whats-her-name is so big now. she's a great actress. bleak, gripping, emotional, intense. not a happy go-lucky movie but worth a watch.
You'll either love it or hate it. It gives a powerfull insight into a very different way of life - yes a depressing one and yes the movie is short on action but it is not meant to be a blockbuster. If your in the mood (I was when I watched it) it is different but gripping. And I did watch it with subtitles from the beginning, think you'll need to.
Lacked much of a soundtrack, but still a compelling & powerful drama. The main character Ree has good reason to search for her missing father, and it all culminates with her arriving in a most poignant and difficult situation you could imagine. Jennifer Lawrence was outstanding, and was deservedly given an Oscar nomination.
Bleak, slow and difficult to really keep interested. Not one to entertain.
Well acted but fairly depressing.
A very bleak and depressing movie enlightened by a strong feeling of hope. If you ever feel like your life is in the gutter I'd recommend giving it a watch. Seeing how some people in the developed world have to live would probably make you appreciate what you have a lot more. All the actors are fantastic, the script is very smart and the direction was great. It just goes to show what the independent sector is capable of and sure indicate to Hollywood what they should be trying to achieve.
Absolutely great movie. The only slight problem is that some of the accents were so realistic subtitles could have been considered
Winter's Bone was fine but the DVD was shot - hopeless stops 2/3 way through.
Didn't hold my interest at all.....
Had no real idea what this movie was about but once I started watching it, it really got you in, it was so raw and truthful..
believeable, nice refreshing look into that part of america, great filming and scenery and the local actors and kids are brilliant
Just superb. Slow moving, gentle, fantastic turn by all actors. Would watch it again in a heartbeat - but will have more tissues handy.
Boring - the preview did not reflect the movie.
Very dark story. Good acting by leads but very depressing
Good acting from Jennifer Lawrence who really carried this slow film. I found this movie depressing considering it could be true in parts of this world.
Was really excited to see this movie. The cast did a good job but it doesn't make up for the movie going nowhere. Would not recommend it.
Slow going however glad I stayed with it. Excellent cast.
Well worth getting out. Story a bit winded but well work watching. Will make you think.
Grizzly story, brilliantly portrayed by the main female character. Some dark characters here, none a la hollywood, which is a relief!
good movie good story goood cast what more can you want
One of the rare movies that left me thinking the next day. Not easy to watch but neither is life.
Point to movie was gloomy and dismal. Took a long time to get through. Not worth viewing.
Terrible. I kept waiting for it to get better, it never happened. Don't waste your time watching this.
Only watched first 45 minutes. Was so boring and I didn't like the characters.
Depressing... and this is the Murkan way of life that the Murkans hold so dear and want to spread to the rest of the world!!!
Disappointing. Too slow and dull
This movie was way too slow , failed to hold my attention , too dreary
A great american movie. Tight, depressing, truthful. A chronicle of the misery and hopelessness that affects so many "redneck" americans. Performances were outstanding.
top quality film draws you in from the start. It will pull on your heart string what emotional roller coaster, very sad and powerful.
Very bleak but I really enjoyed this movie. Some good black humour. Bit like growing up in Limerick only worse.
gut wrenchingly disturbing!!!! wish I had never watched it
Good movie, well worth a watch. Good performances all round
Hard to hear what they were saying, too long and padded out.
A very hard film and story line, very gloomy, not the best movie to watch by your self
BORING! One of the most slow, boring movies I have ever seen! I don't know why I watched it until the end .... HATED IT!
I found this dvd hard to listen to with the accents, and somewhat disturbing with the storyline, but it was certainly different and not what I expected, not typical hollywood predictable
Excellenmt, beautifully acted. Jennifer Lawrence is an actress to look out for in teh future.
One of the worst movies we have seen. Boring.
Good movie, well acted & worth seeing.
This was a good movie, families have a strange way of helping one another in times of need
Well acted but a little too slow for my liking.
Quite a different story line. Lead character played a very strong role. Was slow at times but showed the family bond that kept the family together.
A very hard movie but believable, a tough life for a 17 year old girl, who fought hard to keep her 2 siblings alive. In a hillbilly type town.
I watched this movie all the way through hoping it would get better or have a decent twist at the end it. Sadly it didn't, do yourself a favour and choose just about anything else.
Real, gripping and devoid of cliches. Enjoyed every moody minute. Great lead performance - feisty and fragile.
This paints a grim picture of the other part of poorer America which is rarely depicted by Hollywood. The pace was slow initially but the movie setting provided for a brooding and menacing story. The lead actress was great.
Great movie. Faithful to the novel.
It was ok....but a little slow
I thought this was going to be so much better than what it was. Lead actress is great, but overall let down of a film.
I'm sorry I fell for this one - I just hate those american south violence tales - didn't watch much of it to know I could do without this one.
boring, boring and did i mention boring, very slow movie i could only manage the first 30 minutes then turned it off
didn't like it-didn't finish watching it.
This movies goes nowhere, thrills no one and is one of the worst movies I have gone to sleep in!
sad movie - not a feel good movie - but compelling to watch to the end
The courage portrayed in this film is heart warming and so is the lovely southern drawl. A beautiful story of love and loyalty, well worth watching.
Boring fell asleep watching it.
Whatever the point of this movie might have been, it gets lost amidst the incomprehensible dialogue and the strange characters who may or may not be related. A waste of time and it certainly was wintery enough to be chilled to the bone. In contrast to the movie, the 'Making Of' feature on the DVD is excellent. It is creatively different to most such, quirkily introducing various members of the team. And it was cold, judging by how they were all rugged up. Interesting too, that it was no movie set, but real people's homes.
A very slow and depressing film.
Interesting story line. Very good acting.
This is an excellent movie but not if you want "feel good" in a Paris Hilton sort of way. Gives a good guide to understanding the psyche of a certain section of America - unfortunately too large a section! The casting director would've had a ball as the characters are wonderful. Very honest story and well acted. It would be worth putting on the subtitles though, as some of the dialogue is non understandable. It definitely isn't boring, but you have to be a bit thoughtful.
This is a bleak hallowing movie. The only saving grace is the lead actor - Ree (Jennifer Lawrence). Most of the characters are not very nice people who carve out dubious existences on the wrong side of the law. Ree is tough, but she is decent, loving and she will do what it takes to save her family. Not an easy watch, but highly recommended!
Beautifully filmed, shows the poor 'redneck' farmer side of Southern Missouri real 'Deliverance' theme. Low budget film that used local residents in bit parts which gives it a harsh reality. Be patient with this film it gets better , has a slow build up that explains relationships the 17 year old Jennifer Lawrence (excellent acting ) has including huge family responsibilities. There is a quiet dialogue throughout the film and I am either going deaf or the cast have a mumbling southern accent either way I used the subtitles rather than rewind. Most families are uneducated , poor and basic and have their own rules despite what the law says. There is one brutal scene that involves a chainsaw that made the wife close her eyes, but it was necessary and not too bad. You are left to decide how the film ends which always detracts as far I am concerned. Overall a 3 + dramatic movie and a good nights entertainment
I liked this film when I saw it in the cinema, but I enjoyed it even more watching it again. It's a simple story about a brave young woman trying to save her family in a desperate situation, but it's told remarkably well and with a real authenticity that is quite rare in cinema these days. Highly recommended.
The acting from the main characters is excellent. I was suspended on the edge of my seat hoping that the main character would survive, and in awe of her bravery and tenancity. The Ozarks are beautiful.
This is a stunning film. The film showcases the Ozark community in Missouri and it's complicated blood ties. The leading lady Jennifer Lawrence is mesmerising, you can't take your eyes off her. The tension and feelings of dread never leave as you watch Ree Dolly (Lawrence) desperately try to locate her father to stop the law repossessing her home. Top notch drama.
This is a boring movie, not much really happens. I can't believe this was nominated for 4 oscars! Give it a miss.

Here's 2 hours of your life you'll never get back.
*AVOID AVOID AVOID*
And if you do happen to watch it chase it with something like The Golden Girls for a quick pick me up.
Very dark interpretation of life in the 'hillbilly' country areas. If it weren't for the modern cars, it could well be set 50 odd years ago as nothing much changes. Young girl of 'bad blood' side of family learns her father used the family home as his bail bond. distant relatives are wary of her advances and reasons to find her father and 'women should really have a man do' what journey of information she embarks on.Life is hard in these hills but blood really is thicker than water.
Not a feel good movie but certainly worth watching for excellent acting and direction. Gripping story. Have a happy movie to watch straight after, you'll need cheering up.
slow boring not worth the money
I saw this at the movies when it was released and was mesmerised by this haunting story of a courageous, brave young woman who is desperately trying to look after her sick mother and two younger brothers in a situation of poverty, menacing relatives and a hostile community. Not an easy movie to watch, it's quite dark and at times violent, but Jennifer Lawrence and John Hawkes are amazing, brilliant acting. After seeing the movie, I had to buy the novel, and now I can't wait to watch it again on DVD.
I found Winter's Bone to be a beautiful and haunting portrait of a world so far removed from the modern day, set in the intriuging Ozark Mountians- a place that time seems to have forgotten.
The performances are understated and Jennifer Lawrence is breathtaking as the young girl fighting for her family and searching for her father against seemingly impossible odds and the story line is emotional gripping- a really interesting and measured film- I can't see the reason for a 1.5 star rating, especially with such rave critical reviews.
I saw this film at the Sydney Film Festival. It is a gripping, taut thriller of a teenage girl fighting to keep her family together after her father has put their home up for bail and disappeared. It keeps you on the edge of your seat right until the end and is way more deserving of the 1.5 star rating it has been given here.
