Seventeen-year-old Ree Dolly (Jennifer Lawrence) sets out to track down her father, who put their house up for his bail bond and then disappeared. If she fails, Ree and her family will be turned out into the Ozark woods. Challenging her outlaw kin's code of silence and risking her life, Ree hacks through the lies, evasions and threats offered up by her relatives and begins to piece together the truth. Winter's bone features a remarkable performance by emerging star Jennifer Lawrence and an incredible insight into the Ozark mountain community of mid-western America.

Winter’s Bone reminds me of the reasons why I love cinema. A director playing around with the forms of various genres. An ensemble of talented actors crafting interesting fully formed characters. The sense of discovery when I witness a star-making performance. It also helps that the film is awfully entertaining; gripping from the word go, with a hauntingly cathartic conclusion. Don’t be put off by the flurry of reviews declaring it both “bleak and uncompromising”. Winter’s Bone is indeed harrowing, but it is also fun. Don’t be put off by the flurry of reviews declaring it both “bleak and uncompromising”. Winter’s Bone is indeed harrowing, but it is also fun. It’s fun, because it’s excellent, and after enduring the mostly-disappointing Hollywood blockbuster season, simply seeing an exquisite piece of work such as this brings a smile to my face. This ... is a movie.

The genre-bending director is Debra Granik, who delivers a nifty little neo-noir set in the “bleak and uncompromising” Ozark Mountains of the Mississip’ (brought to life by DOP Michael McDonough). But Winter’s Bone – based upon Daniel Woodrell’s 2006 novel of the same name, and adapted by Granik and Anne Rosellini - is less Frozen River and more Brick. It’s a mystery, a chase film, a gumshoe tale and so much more. The young actress who gives the star-making performance is Jennifer Lawrence (merely 17 years old at the time of filming). She gives an unflinchingly determined performance as Ree Dolly, the teenager charged with caring for her two younger siblings and mentally-ill mother following the arrest of her father. She’s the whip-smart descendant of Sam Spade and Philip Marlowe. I think back to my favourite breakout performance of 2009 – Carey Mulligan as Jenny in An Education. Ree Dolly wouldn’t have a second for Jenny; she’d think her to be insufferable. Mulligan scored a well-deserved Best Actress Oscar nomination for her role last year. This year, I’ll be campaigning for Lawrence to win it.

Life in the Ozark is tough. Students at the local school are prepared for one of two scenarios – parenthood or military recruitment. Ree’s options aren’t even that promising. She’s had to drop out to hunt food for her brother, sister and mother; she’s desperately trying to keep them warm, keep them from starving, and keep them alive. Her already unenviable situation is made worse following a visit from Sherriff Baskin (Garret Dillahunt). He says her meth-cooking daddy has placed their home as bail bond, and daddy just fled town. Baskin says Ree should prepare to move, but the only option would be to move into the wilderness. Instead, she sets out to interrogate her neighbours, find her no-good dad, and hand him over to The Law. The task will turn out to be downright impossible. But Ree is far more resolute than expected.

The trajectory of the film’s plot doesn’t stray too far from traditional crime fiction. Ree’s at-first intimidating uncle Teardrop (an equally award-worthy John Hawkes) is revealed to have her best interests at heart, while other, seemingly more-helpful acquaintances are discovered to be hiding one secret or another. However, it’s only at the film’s end do you notice the adherence to conventions. Throughout proceedings, it is consistently surprising and truly thrilling – more so than any other recent film I’ve seen recently. The stakes are sky high – for Ree, for Teardrop, even for the villains – and that is a rare treat these days. Winter’s Bone is a hard-boiled detective story, a gritty thriller, a harrowing commentary on life for the have-nots and a stirring character piece. What else can I say?

5/5

Fascinating story and great cast. The kids were wonderful and Jennifer Lawrence held it all together beautifully. All of the support staff looked and sounded as if they came out of the hills to make the movie. Interesting that the world financial crisis has spread it's affects so far that these hillbillies turned to drugs to make their living. By the look of the toys and extras in and around the houses there was, at times, extra money to spend of luxuries, though they were apparently not valued, just as maintenance was not kept up. This was a very interesting, if not a bit scary, story of a world we never see.

A stark and realistic depiction of life (and low life) in the Ozarks. "Arma goana hurnt surm squrls". Yep, subtitles would have helped at times. Jennifer Lawrence is a standout as the young teenager who goes searching for her father in order to keep the family together in the family home. No punches pulled here, this gritty drama kept me interested and impressed right up to the last Banjo twang!

You'll either love it or hate it. It gives a powerfull insight into a very different way of life - yes a depressing one and yes the movie is short on action but it is not meant to be a blockbuster. If your in the mood (I was when I watched it) it is different but gripping. And I did watch it with subtitles from the beginning, think you'll need to.

Lacked much of a soundtrack, but still a compelling & powerful drama. The main character Ree has good reason to search for her missing father, and it all culminates with her arriving in a most poignant and difficult situation you could imagine. Jennifer Lawrence was outstanding, and was deservedly given an Oscar nomination.

A very bleak and depressing movie enlightened by a strong feeling of hope. If you ever feel like your life is in the gutter I'd recommend giving it a watch. Seeing how some people in the developed world have to live would probably make you appreciate what you have a lot more. All the actors are fantastic, the script is very smart and the direction was great. It just goes to show what the independent sector is capable of and sure indicate to Hollywood what they should be trying to achieve.

Whatever the point of this movie might have been, it gets lost amidst the incomprehensible dialogue and the strange characters who may or may not be related. A waste of time and it certainly was wintery enough to be chilled to the bone. In contrast to the movie, the 'Making Of' feature on the DVD is excellent. It is creatively different to most such, quirkily introducing various members of the team. And it was cold, judging by how they were all rugged up. Interesting too, that it was no movie set, but real people's homes.

This is an excellent movie but not if you want "feel good" in a Paris Hilton sort of way. Gives a good guide to understanding the psyche of a certain section of America - unfortunately too large a section! The casting director would've had a ball as the characters are wonderful. Very honest story and well acted. It would be worth putting on the subtitles though, as some of the dialogue is non understandable. It definitely isn't boring, but you have to be a bit thoughtful.

This is a bleak hallowing movie. The only saving grace is the lead actor - Ree (Jennifer Lawrence). Most of the characters are not very nice people who carve out dubious existences on the wrong side of the law. Ree is tough, but she is decent, loving and she will do what it takes to save her family. Not an easy watch, but highly recommended!

Beautifully filmed, shows the poor 'redneck' farmer side of Southern Missouri real 'Deliverance' theme. Low budget film that used local residents in bit parts which gives it a harsh reality. Be patient with this film it gets better , has a slow build up that explains relationships the 17 year old Jennifer Lawrence (excellent acting ) has including huge family responsibilities. There is a quiet dialogue throughout the film and I am either going deaf or the cast have a mumbling southern accent either way I used the subtitles rather than rewind. Most families are uneducated , poor and basic and have their own rules despite what the law says. There is one brutal scene that involves a chainsaw that made the wife close her eyes, but it was necessary and not too bad. You are left to decide how the film ends which always detracts as far I am concerned. Overall a 3 + dramatic movie and a good nights entertainment

I liked this film when I saw it in the cinema, but I enjoyed it even more watching it again. This is a stunning film. The film showcases the Ozark community in Missouri and it's complicated blood ties. The leading lady Jennifer Lawrence is mesmerising, you can't take your eyes off her. The tension and feelings of dread never leave as you watch Ree Dolly (Lawrence) desperately try to locate her father to stop the law repossessing her home. Top notch drama.

Very dark interpretation of life in the 'hillbilly' country areas. If it weren't for the modern cars, it could well be set 50 odd years ago as nothing much changes. Young girl of 'bad blood' side of family learns her father used the family home as his bail bond. distant relatives are wary of her advances and reasons to find her father and 'women should really have a man do' what journey of information she embarks on.Life is hard in these hills but blood really is thicker than water.

I saw this at the movies when it was released and was mesmerised by this haunting story of a courageous, brave young woman who is desperately trying to look after her sick mother and two younger brothers in a situation of poverty, menacing relatives and a hostile community. Not an easy movie to watch, it's quite dark and at times violent, but Jennifer Lawrence and John Hawkes are amazing, brilliant acting. After seeing the movie, I had to buy the novel, and now I can't wait to watch it again on DVD.

I found Winter's Bone to be a beautiful and haunting portrait of a world so far removed from the modern day, set in the intriuging Ozark Mountians- a place that time seems to have forgotten. The performances are understated and Jennifer Lawrence is breathtaking as the young girl fighting for her family and searching for her father against seemingly impossible odds and the story line is emotional gripping- a really interesting and measured film- I can't see the reason for a 1.5 star rating, especially with such rave critical reviews.

I saw this film at the Sydney Film Festival. It is a gripping, taut thriller of a teenage girl fighting to keep her family together after her father has put their home up for bail and disappeared. It keeps you on the edge of your seat right until the end and is way more deserving of the 1.5 star rating it has been given here.
