Anthony Mann's edgy, psychological western features a powerful performance by Jimmy Stewart as a man obsessed. In the old west, cowboy Lin McAdam wins a valuable Winchester 1873 repeating rifle in a shooting contest -- which his brother instantly steals. This leads to a rousing series of adventures for McAdam, as he attempts to track down the weapon, which passes through the hands of a number of dangerous people. Meanwhile, Lin also must deal with the cold-blooded murder of his father. Seeking vengeance, the cowboy sets out to find the killer. And when he does, the two men match skills in a violent, deadly showdown.

A western classic. Simple story well shot and superbly acted. Early speaking parts by Rock Hudson (Indian chief) and "Anthony" (sic) Curtis a loyal and dutiful cavalry trooper. Dan Durea is a really good bad guy and the hero gets the girl (a young Shelly Winters) in the end. Must see for cowboy movie buffs

Jim Stewart takes some beating as an actor, he always seems so credible in anything he is chosen.

A classic western up there with the best of them. Director Anthony Mann keeps up the pressure in every frame, getting top performances from a splendid cast of characters as they polish off the clever screen play. A gold pass lesson in film making,eg check out camera placement in the coin shoot out scene and b/g framing of the indian with a lance. Mann & Jimmy Stewart made five westerns together all of them well worth catching.

Interesting Western with a novel storyline which focuses on a rifle as it passes from person to person. While the movie touches on psychological themes, it isn't self-conscious like many Westerns that came later. Also spot early supporting roles by Rock Hudson (an Injun) and Tony Curtis.

One of the great westerns of the period. Great script, great actors, great action. This is what we loved to go to see - and still do. The bonus interview with Stewart is tricky to find. Select on bonus, go to subtitles and enter then return to film. The interview voices over the film with subtitles, and is worth hearing.
