Violence and infrequent coarse language

Director: Jonathan Lynn
Actors: Bill Nighy, Emily Blunt, Rupert Grint, Rupert Everett, Martin Freeman, Gregor Fisher

Victor Maynard (Bill Nighy) is the most respected assassin in the country - and also the most expensive. He is the doyen of killers, carrying on the family business established by his grandfather. The problem is that it's not a job where you tend to meet the right girl - and so his domineering mother (who has recently gone to live in a Home) is increasingly worried that he's not going to get an heir to carry on the family business. She nags him about it; and has even taken up knitting, just in case. By contrast, Rose (Emily Blunt) is a free spirit, a gleeful, joyous thief, who has come up with the ultimate con. She borrows a Rembrandt (a real Rembrandt) and gets a copy of it as well. She meets Ferguson (Rupert Everett), an art-loving gangster who is determined to buy the painting, and, after he's had it authenticated, she performs a switch - leaving him with the fake. By the time he realises, she's gone - and Ferguson has only one course of action. He calls Victor.

Quirky enough to warrant a watch. Good cast who all did a reasonable job.

A gentlemanly hit man who is about to retire has his life turned upside down by a young female thief. Sometimes amusing but largely uninspired and dull comedy crime drama.

Really do not get why so many reviewers below have rated this movie so highly - it is a really silly movie. Full of great actors but I found the story to be clunky. We turned it off before the end. I normally love Bill Nighy but he annoyed me in this flick.

If you're looking for a truly underrated action / comedy / romance - ADD THIS TO YOUR QUEUE NOW. Blessed with the likes of Bill Nighy, Emily Blunt, Martin Freeman, Rupert Everett and even Rupert Grint from those boy wizard movies nobody's heard of - this is one movie you'll wish you'd seen on the silver screen. Bill Nighy plays the role of an accomplished hitman - it's the family business in fact so he has to be good, right? Well his detached demeanour takes an overdue beating when he meets Emily Blunt. She's supposed to be his next hit, but after a genuine comedy of errors, he winds up protecting her and a hapless innocent bystander - the very languid Rupert Grint. Martin Freeman plays Nighy's nemesis or competition in the assassin trade with hilarious results. And Rupert Everett is the perfectly coiffed bad guy. Lots of very funny moments, sharply written scenes and even a tender love scene (!).

The original French version was released on DVD recently. Having now seen both I have to say, that as much as I liked this version (I'm a fan of Bill Night and Rupert Everett ), the French one is better. The humour is far more subtle and there is better character (and plot) development. Stll, as a silly Brit romp, this is worth watching.

Professional assassin Victor Maynard (Bill Nighy) is a middle-aged man proud of his family's tradition in the profession and is endlessly reminded of his heritage by his interfering mother Louisa (Eileen Atkins). He gets a contract to kill a very attractive young woman Rose (Emily Blunt) who sells fake versions of famous paintings for exorbitant sums. Victor is attracted to Rose and protects her against one of her victims who commissions two hit-men to pursue her. Victor gets rid of them and eventually marries Rose. This quite entertaining British crime thriller has a few comic and “stiff upper lip? moments which bring to mind the likes of “Get Carter” with Michael Caine and “Lock, stock and two smoking barrels” with Jason Statham. One interesting feature in the DVD includes commentaries by the director as well as producer on the film and by each actor on his/her character played in the film.

A light fast, gentle black comedy with excellent acting, interesting plot and fun action. Beautiful British humour with semi clique characters make for a short entertaining film. I hired the film for my mother to watch and ended up watching it with her and having a most enjoyable time.

(Spoilers) Silly but fun. I do want to know exactly how old the leading man has to be to stop getting the girl. 80? If she were 75 I'd be quite happy, but 25? Same comment for red which is very much the same.

Not too bad Pommy humour, not really into Bill Nighy as such, but didn't mind his subtle straight face humour in this one, as an assassin. Emily blunt who I found a bit stupid at first, sort of grows on you, as a petty thief. The mother plays a good diversion when it gets boring, and red head dude from Harry Potter, well, still don't know what he was doing there. apprentice or not.

Clever, amusing, well staged with a good script. As usual with Bill N, you need to be in the right frame of mind. We had to stop it and watch later on when we were more relaxed, then enjoyed it very much. Emily Duff is excellent.

A good little movie with plenty of laughs. I would watch this one again for entertainment value. In this not overly violent movie, Victor Maynard plays a tormented hitman wrapped in the exploration of his sexuality and who will receive his legacy. Much Better than I thought it was going to be, which is always a bonus.

This is my first review. I have to say something about this movie as it is one of the funniest movies we've seen in a long time. We will definitely be buying this one when we find it in the shops to watch again and again. It doesn't take itself too seriously. Some movies take a while to warm up, establish the storyline then get funny. This one surprised us in the first minute. Yes expect vioience and bad language - it is a comedy about an assassin. But the expletives are not used just to fill the script. Predictable? Maybe a little, but the hilarious journey taken to get to the end is well worth it. A couple of quotes from the movie "Come and see what happens when you don't clean your gun." and "Did you see that?", "See what?" We are still giggling about! Dark morbid humour... maybe, but very well done! Enjoy!

A great movie if you love British comedy, Bill Nighly is his usual brillant self as the stiff upper lip, very proper British gentleman dispite being a profesional hit man, Rupert Grint is his usual clumsy, bumbling character straight from Harry Potter, Rupert Everett not quiet up to his usual comic self as the wounded victim/baddy of the story and Emily Blunt is the lively, sexy, improper 'target' that everyone falls in love with. Not an exciting or high adventure story but a good, funny, sit back and enjoy British comedy.

This is a thoroughly entertaining and enjoyable movie. Bill Nighy is his usual cool self with a light comedic touch and Rupert Graves, after hamming it up a bit settles into the role and gives a very creditable performance. Emily Blount demonstrates a versatility only previously hinted at and is very convincing as someone who is not always as she seems. The real treat for us was seeing Martin Freeman eke everything out of a role as a suave hit man with a crocodile smile - he was very funny. A highly recommended movie, a lot of fun.

I am a huge Bill Nighy and Emily Blunt fan, but despite these wonderful actors this film was one of the most tedious I have watched in a long time... I can't quite understand it because the idea was there, the performers were there, the cinematography and set design were good, even some of the lines were quite good, but overall it lacked...well, EVERYTHING! Don't be fooled by the snappy trailer - this film is a straight to DVD royal flop.
