In retelling the Romeo and Juliet tragedy, West Side Story won 10 Oscars. But instead of Verona's warring Montagues and Capulets, it's the Sharks vs. the Jets, rival gangs battling for turf on the streets of 1950s New York City. When Jet Tony (Richard Beymer) falls for Shark Maria (Natalie Wood), the only way to solve their dilemma is through a rumble in the asphalt jungle.

An all time favourite of mine. Fabulous dance and music and Rita Moreno - what more could you ask for? Despite some outdated dialogue and some miscasting one of the great musicals.

Brilliant screen adaptation of the hit broadway show. A musical version of Romeo and Juliet, it is the story of two street gangs, the Irish American Jets and the Puerto Rican Sharks, in a battle for turf on the West Side of New York set in the 50's. It tells of the forbidden love between former Jet, Tony and Puerto Rican Maria. The instant classic musical score and stunning choreography made this the most popular film of 1961, winning 9 Oscars including best picture. It is a film which will probably never be remade because it is hard to see how it could be improved. It's plea for tolerance and understanding between people of different backgrounds is more relevant today than ever. Mention must be made of Rita Moreno and George Chakiris as Anita and Bernardo, they are electrifying and deservedly won best supporting oscars for their performances. Highly recommended.

A stunning movie despits its age. Sensational dance, music and songs just add to an already electrifying story. One of the greatest of them all and easy to see why it won so many accolades and Oscars.
