We Need to Talk About Kevin is a nightmare movie; disjointed, dizzying, and disturbing at a primal level. Tilda Swinton stars as Eva, a reluctant mother cursed with the positively satanic spawn of the film's title (Ezra Miller). Instead of shedding blood on screen, Ramsay saturates the colour palette to nausea-inducing effect. We Need to Talk About Kevin is a nightmare movie; disjointed, dizzying, and disturbing at a primal level. Tilda Swinton stars as Eva, a reluctant mother cursed with the positively satanic spawn of the film's title (Ezra Miller). Kevin perpetrates some horrendously depraved acts in the picture's finale, but director Lynne Ramsay chooses not to depict them (Lionel Shriver's source novel is supposedly far more graphic). Instead of shedding blood on screen, Ramsay saturates the colour palette to nausea-inducing effect. Violence is replaced with unsettling close-ups of deep red tomatoes, runny strawberry jam and moist lychees; they're littered throughout proceedings and inspire dread in a way fruit rarely should. Characterisations of the evil-from-birth Kevin and Eva's blind-to-it-all husband Franklin (John C. Reilly) are all relayed  through Eva's unreliable, grief-stricken prism. This is misery seen through a grotesque fun-house mirror. This is Rosemary's Baby taken to its logical conclusion. Don't mistake the picture's art-house pedigree. This is horror.

When we first meet Eva, she's holed up in a small dilapidated hovel quietly enduring graffiti attacks from mysterious assailants. Wherever she goes, Eva feels the eyes of the locals burning into her. She scores a filing job at a travel agency, and the little victory inspires the first smile in what we assume to be a very long time. It's short lived; she's caught grinning by another woman who promptly slaps it off of her. As Eva tries - and fails - to put her life back together, we flashback to the events that prompted her undoing. Her accidental pregnancy almost twenty years earlier; her marriage to the kindly Franklin; her struggle to relate to her son (the fittingly dead-eyed Jasper Newell). Where Franklin and their young daughter Celia (Ashley Gerasimovich) is now, why the sixteen-year-old Kevin is in jail, and the reason Eva tells Christian door-knockers she's going straight to hell we don't discover until the climax. But it's not hard to guess. Ramsay's delirious narrative spiral keeps us circling the drain; around and around we go, deeper and deeper, with a complete understanding of the destination that awaits. She keeps us spinning until the last possible moment.

Ramsay and Rory Stewart Kinnear have adapted Shriver's novel for the screen. Once upon a time, the author expressed concern over whether the film would be able to capture Eva as an 'unreliable narrator'. She can rest assured Ramsay and Kinnear have done just that. Though Kevin (both as a child and as a teen) can sometimes seem outrageously wicked and methodical, it makes sense that a mother shirking her responsibilities would recall him as such. Eva resents motherhood and wishes for the life she once had, even when he was just a festering genetic concoction that grew inside of her. As a baby, he won't stop crying, so she goes to construction sites for relative peace and quiet. As a toddler, he looks at her with nothing but disdain. As a teenager, he keeps masturbating dementedly even when she accidentally walks in on him. Isn't it easy to say you hated your child because he was pure evil? Then again, Kevin does revel in nihilistically evil actions. Was Eva always damned to birth the next great madman?  I'm not sure the film is so much an examination of the nature vs. nurture debate as it is a devastatingly chilling genre pic about a Damien-esque little devil. Either way, it might be the best prophylactic ad in the history of cinema.

Swinton - an actress for whom hyperbolic praise cannot effectively compliment - is so good here. She gives Eva infinite shades, which is essential considering the one-dimensional view of Kevin and Franklin (intentionally) offered here. Even Miller, who is asked to take his character over-the-top and into the realm of Patrick Bateman-territory, gets a final scene reprieve that forces us to question just how crazy he is. Despite Ezra playing the eponymous character, this is undeniably Tilda's movie. Ramsay - taking cues from David Lynch, Dario Argento, Gaspar Noe and injecting it with her own signature flair - creates a horrifying, beautiful canvass for Swinton to deliver some of her best work.

4/5

This film showcases a boy on his own trajectory with parents who don't really seem to give a dam how demented he is. Mum and Dad are as disturbed and weird in their own ways as their son - which is why the son has an uninterrupted path to commit the acts he does. In full agreement with the member review by Larry: "A lesson in the results of the 'No Discipline' method of child rearing!" There are exceptions, but generally behind every child's behaviour stands the parent/s. Super Nanny Jo Frost's shows highlight that really well. Jo would have sorted out the parents, lol! And instead there'd be a happy ending. I had to knock off one star for just how blatantly passive and enabling the parents were.

Recommended by a friend as "the most gut wrenching movie like ever" , after 30 minutes I decided I didn't want to know, and turned it off. Readers should know that I was seriously affected by "The Exorcist" when I was a young adult (barely 21) and I still have an aversion to psycho horror, and the poxy review needs a star rating, so the 1 is for compliance only

We need to talk about entertainment. This film & the like are getting to be very tedious. I'm so very glad I didn't pay out good money at the cinema to see this load of twaddle. Whatever happened to films that had a beginning a middle (that makes sense) & an end happy or not.

The film is horrifyingly realistic. But its method of going back and forward in time with the hints of the horrors to come, made it more suspenseful than I could bear and I had to stop watching. It is a very powerful film and does portray a realistic scenario

The age old question remains. Nurtured or Nature - Science has yet to prove why but for me it would seem a bit of both :) funny how when he was in jail he pointed out one of the few times he ever had respect for his mum when she disciplined him ( for shitting his pants) just goes to show how respect is earned.

Brilliant movie, wonderful acting and awesome directing. The storyline was intricately weaved and I had a real empathy for the mother during the film. Kevin was pure evil and I loved the close ups on the lychee and jam sandwich as symbolism. One that will leave you thinking about it for days after. Brilliant.

Well what a suspense filled, well directed movie. Disturbing, yes, but with an ending as in this movie, the movie has rightfully weaved "disturbing" through the entire movie creating a feeling that something awfully disturbing has happened but you don't know what. Clever. Slow yes. But Tilda's character's has been in slow pain throughout Kevin's existence. So yes this movie mirrors the pain and grief. Again, clever. This mother has had difficulties with Kevin since his conception. Did she make him into this difficult child or was he genetically created this way. I believe the latter and one could feel her efforts in trying to love him but, as it seems, after all that happened, she indeed did. One needs then to sympathize with this woman desperately trying to do the right thing with this unlovable little evil child. I have only one criticism in that the evilness in this child was too obvious and could've been more subtle which would've heightened its tension. How the father had no idea is a little too vague. This movie moved back and fro through time but without any confusion. And brilliant acting by Tilda Swinton.

Frightening thriller that retains some of the ambiguity of the novel. There is no real answer to 'why' a Colombines massacre takes place.

As reported below it is slow to start, but I think that makes it all the more engaging - it begins and you know you're going to be led to a place of doom and heartbreak but it takes you there in such a way that you can't take you're eyes off it. It is an amazing, disturbing, thought provoking film. It was stuck in my head for quite a few days following watching it. Tilda Swinton's performance in this movie is brilliant and the last scene between mother and son had me wanting to cry and scream at the same time. Oh and word of advice, spoilers are a feature of some of the reviews below, so careful while reading them if you haven't seen the movie yet

A movie doesn't have to mirror the written story but is should have the integrity of the original. I had read the excellent book and expected a movie of comparable quality. Unfortunately this disjointed offering wasn't that movie.

This movie made me really glad I don't have children! Tilda Swinton - as always - was incredible. I wanted to slap John C Reilly's character, and sell Kevin to the gypsies. Not an easy film to watch, but superbly done. The two kids who play Kevin (as a child, and a teenager) were excellent.

Excellent acting and strong tension. Even though it was excellent, I didn't enjoy it. I'm a psychologist, so watched it for the betrayal of the development of a psychopath, which sadly was quite accurate (not the mother's fault by the way).

Full marks to Lynne Ramsey for daring to take this on, and also for succeeding in restructuring the story to suit film. Not often do you wish a deep film was longer, but I was left wanting more, particularly of the Eva's attempts to connect with Kevin. This film must give courage to parents finding it difficult - we could all pray for some of her heart. Seen the film? Then be sure to read the book too.

I liked this movie despite its bleak look at a teenager cut off from reality in many ways. I wonder if he would be diagnosed as a psychopath or sociopath, even though there were a few tender moments between him and his family. I felt sorry for everyone in this movie and yes, the mood did stick with me for a couple days afterwards.

An engaging DVD. The presentation by flashbacks and forwards kept the mystery going although, there is always an anticipation. The psychological twists were quite interesting because Kevin's hostility towards his mother and his warm relationship with his father is sort of reversed with his murder of his father. However, his sibling rivalry increases naturally to the extreme point of murdering his sister. His mass murdering at school indicated the degree of hostility he has towards life in general. Although Kevin's mass mudering is claimed, as stated by his mother, to be carefully planned to gain a reduced sentence due to his age, the suggestion of a more positive relationship developing with his mother could imply that she will be another of his victims on his release from prison. This psychological drama of a boy with personality disorder is quite unsettling. I would recommend this DVD to thinkers but not to the faint hearted.

This is more about an accidental pregnancy (tomato throwing Spain), a forced marriage (with dull Franklin), post-natal depression (red, blood-shot eyes), OCD's, and a mother who doesn't want a child (see the scene where baby Kevin is crying while Eva holds him at arms length, then stands near a jackhammer to dull the crying), than about an evil child! Kevin was made evil by the hate transferred from his pathetic mother- it swelled and burned inside him until it exploded at 15 years of age! The tagline should read: "Anyone can make a baby, but only some can be good parents!"

Wow. What a thought provoking and immensely disturbing movie. Though hard to watch, I felt so deeply for Eva and her difficulties with Kevin. As my husband said at the end of the movie, there's nothing good about Kevin. This movie is crafted to make you feel disturbed, and question whether anything could have been done to prevent Kevin. Well worth sticking with if you fee like turning off.

Slow to start but wait, it's worth it. Poses a lot of questions about families and parenting. Why are we letting kids away with so much? Why are some parents afraid of their kids? Why are the kids dictating what happens in the home? We are pandering to them too much! Anyway Tilda Swindon is great in a role requires a lot of sufferance.

They need to do more than just talk about Kevin. Indeed he is hardly talked about at all, everything just happens. Unfortunately it doesn't happen chronologically in the movie, but in a puzzle of pieces at different times that makes it all highly confusing and hard to follow, or even make much sense of at the end. Both the audience and the mother are left with the dilemma of whether it really would have made any difference had there been more talk about Kevin, especially from professional help. It's a movie that is ambitious, profound and disturbing, but way too 'arty' for its own good.

I have to admit I had to stop watching this film about 20 minutes before the ending. It was too disturbing. The lychee scene really nauseated me (see critic review above). My partner finished it and explained that the ending was actually less disturbing than the rest of the film had been. I think this is the sort of film you'll still be thinking about and talking about a week later. It's a classic mind**** and despite the lack of blood and gore, it is VERY scary and VERY hard to watch in parts. It tackles a disturbing subject matter -- the mother of a sociopath wonders what she did wrong -- to horrific effect. Definitely worth checking out, if you can stomach it.

It's not often that a film surpasses the novel it is based on, but director Lynne Ramsay has turned the tables in this quite stunning version of the best selling novel of the same name. I've read the book and jokingly referred to it as "We Need To Talk About Getting A Better Editor", largely because I found it a fabulous idea weighed down with too much unnecessary guff. Ramsay strips the book back to its bare bones and combines this with an intelligent script and powerhouse performance from Tilda Swinton. Necessarily grim and unrelentingly intense, this is a film that tackles several difficult, even taboo, subjects with brutal honesty and remarkable clarity. If you don't like scary/sad/violent/there is no happy ending -type films, avoid this at all costs and hope that your copy of Burlesque is in the mail.
