Amazing movie, based on an amazing real-life story. Set in WWII era, it follows the desperate trek of a small group of Siberian gulag-escapees from Siberia to their destination, India. Excellent acting, gorgeous scenery, gripping drama. I watched this twice in one week, which I never do with most movies unless they are exceptional, and got my two sons, 11 &14, to watch it, they loved it too (excellent history lesson!).

Only three stars from me. Many scenes have been filmed in a studio and one can actually see it. Filmed in Bulgaria and Morocco rather than in Mongolia and Siberia, etc. Contains one extra feature in which actors talk quite predictably about "great camaraderie, etc. Frankly, a disappointing movie; what would actually interest me would be a documentary about an achievement of a French man Cyril Delafosse-Guiramand (who lives in Canberra, apparently) who actually did the whole track on his own. Or an interview with Witold Glinski who actually did it in WWII. This movie is simply not serious enough. I am a discerning viewer, not good enough for me, try harder next time, Mr Weir!

Can Peter Weir do no wrong? Whilst it's certainly not the strongest in his canon, it's still a beautifully shot, moving piece with top notch performances. Even his 'less brilliant than the others' movies are still essential viewing.

This movie had me interested for a while, but then it became questionable how many K's someone could actually be capable of walking considering the conditions???

An absolutely GREAT movie, fantastic storyline made better because it's based on real events. I agree that it does just begin to drag on, but it's as though Peter Weir also realised that and wrapped up the film around that time also. Watch it - you won't regret it! Steve

only just a 3. Nice cinematography, solid cast, but boring plot, they had nothing to work with.
