Mixed martial arts (MMA to those in the know) is not a sport I’m particularly familiar with, but after witnessing its unrestrained brutality in Gavin O’Connor’s Warrior, I can only assume 50-75% of all competitors die in the octagon, mid-head grip. How could anyone possibly survive such ferocity? Punches have never looked or sounded quite as painful as they do in this film; each crunch and collision between fist and face feels as visceral as anything in cinema that has come before. However, the film’s great achievement is not in the way it manages to drop us unfit and suitably wimpy audience members right into a good ol’ fashioned no-holds-barred fight, but that it can be perfectly touching, heartbreaking and emotionally satisfying at the same time. It’s the tale of two brothers. Tom Hard...

Tom Hardy stars as Tommy Conlon, a former fighter and recently returned Iraq vet with one hell of a chip on his shoulder. Although his first port of call in his home town of Pittsburgh is his estranged father Paddy (Nick Nolte), Tommy wants to make it clear that he has no interest in making amends with the abusive former-alcoholic. Rather, he wants Paddy to train him for the upcoming Sparta competition, in which the best MMA fighter in the world can take home a $5 million purse. On the other side of town lives Brendan Conlon (Joel Edgerton), a physics teacher struggling to make a life for his wife (Jennifer Morrison) and their three daughters. When it seems they might lose their home, Brendan tries to earn some extra coin by signing up for some parking-lot bouts at the local strip club. That misguided exploit sees him suspended from work, so he decides to temporarily focus his energy on making money in professional fights. I don’t need to tell you that the brothers will eventually face off at the battle royale.

But don’t write Warrior off just yet. Although it follows the same fight-movie structure as originally laid out in the ancient texts (read: Rocky I-III), it exceeds so many other imitators with its compelling central performances and subtle twists on the genre. Hardy has the screen presence of a wolf, and he fights with that same barbarity. Edgerton is not meant to seem quite as physically equipped, but his stamina in the ring is that of a man who would literally die for his family. At some point, there must have been stunt-men in the ring playing Tommy and Brendan, but if so, I could never tell. Not only does the duo commit their bodies to the roles, but also their souls; both are tortured by demons of the past, but instead of mugging and screaming their way through their individual arcs, they play their parts with understatement and grace (well, the grace of an MMA fighter). When they speak to each other for the first time in the film – amazingly, only once before they actually meet in the ring – we understand their relationship completely. The finale – despite its violence  – is beautiful. Nolte similarly gives his all as the “demon” of the Conlon brothers past. Instead of being portrayed as this larger than life figure, we meet him as an emasculated and castrated-dog tormented by past mistakes.

O’Connor and Anthony Tambakis’ screenplay is full of wonderful character moments and tragic exchanges. As a director, O’Connor pulls off some genuinely gripping fight scenes. Perhaps a tad over-long, Warrior still inspired anxiety, joy and yes, even the occasional sniffle.

4/5

If you have an interest in martial arts, then this dvd is worth a watch. Good camera work lighting and sound, perhaps a little long but it's fairly inspirational.

Really bad movie ... Produced, Written and Directed by the same guy does not surprise me. Poor casting, bad scripting and silly fight scenes that were not entertaining and not very UFC (more 80's Rocky mixed with American Wrestling) . I had to punch myself in the face to keep me going.

This movie was excellent - not brilliant. It was a cut above the movie "The Fighter". The fight scenes were much more like fight scenes. All the actors were able to be understood (an unusual thing for American movies). The only criticism was the overdone "monkey" walk by the actor who played the part of "Tommy". Well worth a look.

This is a quality movie with excellent acting by all the key players. Story line is also fresh and if you like a good fight you'll like this. Anyone who's had a father who drinks and has been heavy handed will find it tough going.

The performances were compelling by the three leads, the story gripping. A touch cliched in parts in terms of stickign to a tried and true formula but overall, I thought it was very good. 4 stars.

Who would've thought a film about mixed martial arts would keep us entertained, moved and thrilled? It's a bit by-the-numbers, but it's done so well you just fall for it. Excellent work all round, particularly Nick Nolte in his Oscar winning role.

I enjoyed this movie more than I thought I would. Not really a fan of this style of sport. But it's the family story at the middle of it all that you will either buy or not buy. And everything goes from there. Performances from the 3 leads were great. Nice to see Joel up there in a 'big' movie.

Really enjoyed this movie. The premise of the fight is not really that plausible (two largely unknowns getting entry into the world's biggest tournament within a few short months) but the performances from the leads are outstanding, especially Tom Hardy, who undergoes a complete transformation. Well worth seeing.

Quality UFC mixed martial arts storyline but enjoyable even if not a MMA fan because there is a strong subplot regarding a dysfunctional family (Father & two sons) that has no chance of repair. 3 x leads displayed excellent powerful acting. Good to see Aussie Joel Edgerton mix it in the big time movies. Although a predictable ending the build-up was well done, full of drama and provided a good night's entertainment even if you are not a fight fan.

A quality cast, bone-crunching MMA sequences and a thoughtful script raise Warrior above most of its contemporaries in this genre. Sure, cliches abound, but they generally come with the territory in fight films. My biggest complaint is that Tom Hardy is under-utilised. Anyone who has seen the fantastic "Bronson" will know the raw ferocity and brute strength Hardy is capable of displaying. That same ferocity is glimpsed here and there in Warrior, but never fully realised. A pity, as that could have taken the film to a whole new level.

Right up there with The Fighter (although there are no actors to match Christian Bale's amazing turn from that film), The Warrior is riveting from slow start to heart-in-mouth finish. The fight scenes are adrenaline-pumping affairs, and the movie flows with a nice rhythm punctuated with wonderful character moments. A triumph, and definitely one to watch again.

One of the best movies I've seen in a long long time. The three main actors - Tom Hardy, Joel Edgerton and Nick Nolte are amazing - hard to pick one out of the three main actors, (but at a push it would have to be Tom Hardy as the younger brother). This is not just a movie about mixed martial arts - the storyline is compelling and moving without being schmaltzy. I love this movie!

This is a great movie, a real great one! I have not seen a great movie for a very long time. The cast was perfectly matched to the characters, the pace was perfect and the camera work was spot on. Gritty, compelling, dark and edge of the seat stuff, with a pint of adrenalin thrown in for good measure, bang on.

This Movie should be re-titled CLICHE', because it has taken every cliche available from 'make movies by the number' style of movie making! You can see the eventual ending of this movie in the first Ten Minutes. Spoiler Alert - of course the 2 brothers are going to end up fighting each other in the Championships! Of course the brother who needs the money to pay for his mortgage is going to win the Champioship! Of course the brothers and father are going to re-unite at the end of the Movie! Dull, dull, dull !!!!

A good film for sure, but often very drawn out and borrows a lot from The Fighter (which I think is a much better movie). Overrated in my eyes, but still a nice watch. Nick Nolte is indeed excellent.
