The greatest challenge FDR faced was the one we never saw. A look at Franklin D. Roosevelt's pre-presidency days, from his being diagnosed with polio one year after his unsuccessful bid for the White House as presidential nominee James Cox's running mate, through his rehabilitation in Warm Springs, Ga., to his nomination of Al Smith for Democratic Presidential candidate in 1928.

A great story about something that a lot of people would probably never know about this man. Just shows, until it happens to you, you never think about it. Great acting all round. Loved it.

This was an excellent film - however, we had a problem viewing two segments which "jammed".

Very well reviewed by all members. We found it a bit slow but a good night's entertainment. Shows Roosevelt struggle with polio prior to his 13 yrs as president of the USA. Interesting to see the growth of Eleanor in public life, the terrible way polio victims were treated and the somewhat "clean" version of segregation as depicted by the scriptwriters (highly unlikely).Warm Springs is the place that treats polio victims. Not a classic but recommended.

I had no idea that Franklin D. Roosevelt went through all this grief prior to becoming president. Great acting and great story equals great film.

This is a well made, well presented and very watchable telling of Roosevelt's struggle through the adversity of polio. It also feels very sanitised in its depictions of the apparent harmony of 1930's segregated America, in which everyone loves everyone else, and every black American was a smiling, well fed, compliant subordinate. Very apple pie! Suspend disbelief and enjoy the story of the development of one of the USA's most loved & respected presidents.

Good film, although Roosevelt didn't really have polio but more likely Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) or acute inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy.

Have to admit chose this movie because am Kenneth Brannagh fan. Interesting historically. Personal interest for me as my now deceased elder brother suffered from polio as a 14 year old and received little govt assistance or support.

Excellent - I had polio back in 1947. It brought back so many memories, good & bad. The discimination, ignorance, isolation and determination come out in this film, plus the tremendous support of the few.

Competent and professional in traditional HBO manner buy ultimately thin in plot.Looks like it is intended as first in series. Branagh's accent is very accurate

What a wonderful movie! The story depicted the lives of Franklin D and Eleanor as philanthropists as oppossed to his political career. Kenneth Branagh and Cynthia Nixon played superb roles and having Kathy Bates in a film is always a bonus. His work with polio victims was not something I had been aware of and I found this movie to be very uplifting and heart-warming. A must see for lovers of real life stories.

There are times when you think you know a person of history. This film is one to remember and tells more about a person's private battles within one self to the degree that Franklin Roosevelt life is laid out for all to see. One of the most moving film that I have viewed for a long time.
