Director: Steven Spielberg
Actors: Tom Hiddleston, Benedict Cumberbatch, Jeremy Irvine, Eddie Marsan, Emily Watson, David Thewlis, Toby Kebbell, Peter Mullan, Niels Arestrup, Celine Buckens

War Horse, director Steven Spielberg’s epic adventure, is a tale of loyalty, hope and tenacity set against a sweeping canvas of rural England and Europe during WWI. It begins with the remarkable friendship between a horse named Joey and a young man called Albert, who tames and trains him. When they are forcefully parted, the film follows the extraordinary journey of the horse as he moves through the war, changing and inspiring the lives of all those he meets - British cavalry, German soldiers, and a French farmer and his granddaughter — before the story reaches its emotional climax in the heart of No Man’s Land.

At its core, War Horse is an anti-combat film about the cowardice of man in comparison to the bravery and unflinching determination of animals. It sounds like it were tailor-made for Werner Herzog. In actuality, it's a Steven Spielberg picture, and one of the soggiest of his career. Although Spielberg has never been afraid of embracing cold, hard reality and human brutality, he often spends the final moments of his movies reminding us that everything will be all-right. In War Horse, he spends the entire runtime comforting the audience, and seeks only to recall the overly-romantic and consequence-free battle flicks of old, rather than his own, more recent exploits in the genre (Saving Private Ryan, War of the Worlds, Munich). In the process, he obfuscates the unique central theme, and delivers a stock-standard family flick instead. The final product is entertaining enough, but ultimately underwhelming.

Proceedings kick off in the early 1910s, with drunken Boar veteran Ted Narracott (Peter Mullan) unwisely bidding his entire livelihood on a young horse at a Devon farmer's auction. As his long-suffering wife Rose (Emily Watson) points out, the beast is too small and too weak to plough the field. However, their son Albert (the still-wet-behind-the-ears Jeremy Irvine) takes a fancy to the steed, christening him Joey and pledging to make him the best darn farming horse the south of England has ever seen. His resolve does indeed pay off, but not even Joey's freakishly good ploughing skills can keep the Narracott's out of debt at the onset of World War One. Ted is forced to sell the horse to foppish Captain Nicholls (Tom Hiddleston), who promises to return it to the protesting Albert once the Gerries have surrendered. So begins Joey's epic quest across Europe throughout the entirety of the Great War, during which time he will belong to frightened English soldiers, German deserters, and briefly to an old Frenchman (Niels Arestrup) and his granddaughter (Celine Buckens) caught between two invading forces.

Although War Horse is schmaltzy to a fault, it's not without movie-saving highlights. Emily Watson and Peter Mullan are wonderful as always; the sweetly tragic digression with the French family is time well spent; the clashes between the Allies and the Central Powers are fairly jaw-dropping; and Joey's late dash through No-Man's-Land is as stirring as cinema gets. Also, the 14 different horses used for Joey do some fine work (hey, equine actors deserve credit too). Even an on-the-nose moment in which soldiers from both sides bond over the impressive physicality of the War Horse is more than welcome. However, it's hard to ignore the lack of stakes and sense of loss that should be apparent in a film that purports to decry warfare in all of its forms.

The blame belongs not just to Spielberg, but should be shared with screenwriters Richard Curtis (Love Actually) and Lee Hall (Billy Elliot), who have adapted Michael Morpurgo's novel of the same name for the screen, as well as composer John Williams. They've collectively watered down a rather intriguing tale into one where you have to strip away the soppy sentimentality and CGI pastoral landscapes to find the rather brutal themes at its core (and by that point, they've lost all effect). If it weren't for the expertly-composed skirmishes and the numerous fine performances, War Horse would deserve a trip to the nearest abattoir.

3/5

I like my horses and am very familiar with WW1 history. It took 40 minutes to get to the point where the damned horse could plough a field. The pacing was horrible, way too long, and the subject matter and the way it was handled highly unlikely. Terrible, terrible film.

This is a great movie, but DON'T WATCH IT IF YOU ARE SENSITIVE TO SUFFERING OR LOVE HORSES. Too sad. I wish I hadn't watched it because of the suffering of the horses yet I'm glad I did so now I know the truth.

Highly recommending this movie directed by Stephen Spielberg, he has brought an exceptional story to life about an amazing horse called Joey and a boy who becomes a man. The cinematography is incredible likewise the set design. One of the scenes in No Man's Land where Joey struggles with barbed wire is very emotional. Be warned that tissues are definitely needed to watch this amazing film with wonderful acting and direction.

I stopped watching this farce of a movie after about the first half hour. Typical Spielberg schmaltz - the guy couldn't direct a real drama if his life depended on it. Take Black Beauty combine it with Lassie, and the try to make it original by putting in a WWI setting, epic fail. OK the cinematography and special effects were good, and the acting was pretty good and in fact the script wasn't bad either, but the narrative and the direction is what makes this a typical Spielberg gong. If you like your movie without an ounce of realism, pathos or drama then this movie (and in fact everything Spielberg has done since AI) is for you. I can actually see that if this was a PG or G film (i.e. it was made for kids) then the schmaltz might work, but how can a grown adult absorb 141min of this treacle. Go back to producing TV Steven.

A truly beautiful film from start to finish. I cried so many times i lost count (Both in sadness and in joy). It captures the wonderful connection between human and horse magically, and allows us to see the war through the eyes of Joey (the horse) as he experiences it.

I am really surprised by all the four and five star reviews here for War horse. Can this drivel really have been directed by the same Steven Spielberg that gave us E.T., Raiders of the lost ark and Close encounters? It felt like it was stylistically modelled on post war British melodrama (National Velvet from the 1940's springs to mind) or, as another like-minded reviewer noted, the cheesiest, 70's era, Disney movie you can think of. At 140 minutes; it is also v-e-r-y long.

A rolling epic set during WWI with an exceptionally good cast. The storyline is fairly predictable tugging at the heartstrings all the way. The special effects featuring the war-horse especially are really outstanding. One sequence graphically demonstrates the horror that awaits man, or beast, attempting to cross what was called ‘No Man’s Land’; that sequence alone is worth watching the movie for and accolades to the horse’s trainer. Stephen Spielberg’s directing though is heavy-handed and reminiscent of epics of a past era: the final scene viewed through artificial amber light is like a scene from ‘Gone with the Wind’: had Scarlet O’Hara suddenly appeared saying “As God is my witness I’ll never go hungry again” I would not have been surprised. Add to that, the musical score was better suited to an American western and so ‘War Horse’ disappointed at that level. But what was really unforgivable was that the horse wasn’t credited! Very un-British I would have thought. The horse was terrific. Three stars for the horse, special effects and the cast.

Tries way too hard to be epic. This is Spielberg's Lawrence of Arabia/Gone With The Wind or something and it's corny, overlong, tugs at your heartstrings so hard it'll give you heartburn, and doesn't have much to say. Wow, what film is everyone else here watching? I was so disappointed by it. I found it to be wildly unsubtle and manipulative. The film virtually dictates how you're supposed to feel at any given moment, but it does nothing to earn any of your emotions. Every character, from the plummy British officers to the stoic mother to the twitty French girl, is a cliche. I wanted to like this film, but found it unconvincing in the extreme.

A bit long and not the director's best but very enjoyable and moving, sure its a load of rubbish but Speilberg know's how to make this sirt of film, one of the best horses I have ever seen too, very beautiful & smart! My 9 & 7 yr olds were able to watch even with the war scenes, this is not 'Private Ryan

Great movie - one of Spielberg'"s best. Good to see a heartwarming (and sad at times) story these days. Keep the tissues handy

Really enjoyed this movie, was captivated throughout so true what someone said below .. both heartbreaking and heartwarming. I found it difficult to watch in one part (but i break down when animals are involved in any type of suffering!) obviously a bit of a fairy tale but done very well. Brilliant!

The promos of this movie did not appeal to me but I really enjoyed it. I found it a bit corny at times but enjoyed it and would watch it again.

A nice bit of fantasy for the Disney set. If you can live without horses try Europa Europa.

Epic, long, wonderful photography, stirring music and a sentimental story. Unfortunately it's more a fairy tale than anything remotely believable. And as in many films, having foreigners speaking English to each other with put-on accents is simply silly.

Spielberg at his best. Don't pass up the chance to see this film! If you didn't want to cry in the cinema (which I did) now's your chance to view this beautiful heartwarming movie in the comfort of your own lounge room. Don't forget to stock up on the tissues though.

Potentially Steven Spielberg's best film in almost ten years. It is a little bit too sentimental at times, but besides that the film does a wonderful job at recreating the horrors of the First World War and presenting the intense friendship between one young man and his horse. One of the best films of 2011, a must see.

One of the best horse movies of all time. Very touching and will remember it for a very long time! Loved it!! I think everyone, including the men, had a few tears.

Loved the film, though its early in the year, I think I may have a favourite. It's emotional, strong, heartbreaking at times and heartwarming at others. For the particularly animal strong a little heads-up, my gushy friend cried multiple times. And even though I often find war scenes unmoving and more to the point unbelievable, Speilburg keeps to his famously real screenplay and those with these animals tore at my heart, having a bit of a teary myself. Hits all targets for me and I think almost any female will thoroughly enjoy, though my partner also enjoyed himself.
