Even with the violence of War, i was quite happy for my 11 year old twin God-daughters to watch this wonderfully uplifting story.
I consider it to be a great film for families to watch with Parental supervision.
Great film Great story, Great Horse.
Great movie, loved every moment of it
Excellent movie. Thoroughly recommend it.
This is a great movie, but DON'T WATCH IT IF YOU ARE SENSITIVE TO SUFFERING OR LOVE HORSES. Too sad. I wish I hadn't watched it because of the suffering of the horses yet I'm glad I did so now I know the truth.
Highly recommending this movie directed by Stephen Spielberg, he has brought an exceptional story to life about an amazing horse called Joey and a boy who becomes a man. The cinematography is incredible likewise the set design. One of the scenes in No Man's Land where Joey struggles with barbed wire is very emotional. Be warned that tissues are definitely needed to watch this amazing film with wonderful acting and direction.
Was a very moving, beautiful and upsetting movie....but it was unfortunately very slow.
Excellent Movie though very moving
I am an Ex Veteran , Luckily Returned from the jaw's of Hell , and this is one of the BEST Movie's i have ever seen, Thank you ever so much Quick flix, Im spreading the Word, Well done.
Very moving and beautiful movie that tells the story of an incredible friendship between a young boy and an incredible horse.
excellent!! highly recommend
Excellent movie great scenery
Very entertaining movie, perhaps the only criticism is that at times it became a little slow, perhaps 10-15 minutes could have been edited out to keep it flowing better
I stopped watching this farce of a movie after about the first half hour. Typical Spielberg schmaltz - the guy couldn't direct a real drama if his life depended on it. Take Black Beauty combine it with Lassie, and the try to make it original by putting in a WWI setting, epic fail. OK the cinematography and special effects were good, and the acting was pretty good and in fact the script wasn't bad either, but the narrative and the direction is what makes this a typical Spielberg gong. If you like your movie without an ounce of realism, pathos or drama then this movie (and in fact everything Spielberg has done since AI) is for you. I can actually see that if this was a PG or G film (i.e. it was made for kids) then the schmaltz might work, but how can a grown adult absorb 141min of this treacle. Go back to producing TV Steven.
Excellent, top watching all the way through
A truly beautiful film from start to finish. I cried so many times i lost count (Both in sadness and in joy). It captures the wonderful connection between human and horse magically, and allows us to see the war through the eyes of Joey (the horse) as he experiences it.
A real favourite of mine. I could watch over and over again. An incredible story, wonderful horse and the cast were well suited.
LOVED THIS MOVIE ,I LAUGHED AND I CRIED.
Captivating throughout. Such realistic scenes of the horse running into and being freed from the barbed wire. Positively memorable scene with the two opposing soldiers working together to free the horse.
I loved the movie, especially the way the horses had been trained. My husband was very impressed by the war scenes too. Casting excellent.
I have just been to see the stage show, and was not disappointed, after all the hype about the horse puppets. It was truly wonderful.
Loved everything about this movie- the story, the cinematography and acting. Watched it twice! Fantastic!
We enjoyed this movie, but did not like seeing all the slain animals - we're going to see the stage show, so it will be interesting to see how they do it!
A great movie technically, photographically, acting and put together into great entertainment with focus on futility of war and courage of man and animal.
Beautiful heartwarming story brings tears to the eyes at times but a movie well worth watching
Excellent war saga. Amazing horse stunts. Would definitely recommend it if you are after one of those great movies that Hollywood does so well
Was an OK movie but glad I didn't waste my money seeing it at the cinema, definitely only good for DVD.
Moving story about the rarely seen part the horse played in World War 1.Tends to be a sugary sweet in parts but overall, very entertaining.
A movie for horse lovers Enjoyed this movie from beginning to end.
A movie for horse lovers ( and I am one). Had a bit of everything including tears. Would recommend.
I am really surprised by all the four and five star reviews here for War horse. Can this drivel really have been directed by the same Steven Spielberg that gave us E.T., Raiders of the lost ark and Close encounters? It felt like it was stylistically modelled on post war British melodrama (National Velvet from the 1940's springs to mind) or, as another like-minded reviewer noted, the cheesiest, 70's era, Disney movie you can think of. At 140 minutes; it is also v-e-r-y long.
Enjoyed this movie from beginning to end. Even though it is a bit far fetched for the horse to survive the various incidents it is a well made movie with good characterisation, costumes and locations.
Absolute cheesy drivel. Awful. I thought I was watching a Disney film. I'd rather give this 0 stars, but the system won't let me.
Very moving film. Want to see the stage show now.
Soppy horse movie with a predictable story-line; not particularly well acted. However, very well filmed, and gives a graphic account of WWI and the horrors of trench warfare.
Loved this movie, If you love horses you would love it.
Very good movie. Really enjoyed this one.
Very moving story.. Nice movie for horse lovers alike..
Loved the movie - having seen the stage show in London and then the movie, I was not disappointed. Moving story and well worth watching.
What a lovely story - beautifully told and very moving - enjoyed it very much
A rolling epic set during WWI with an exceptionally good cast. The storyline is fairly predictable tugging at the heartstrings all the way. The special effects featuring the war-horse especially are really outstanding. One sequence graphically demonstrates the horror that awaits man, or beast, attempting to cross what was called ‘No Man’s Land’; that sequence alone is worth watching the movie for and accolades to the horse’s trainer. Stephen Spielberg’s directing though is heavy-handed and reminiscent of epics of a past era: the final scene viewed through artificial amber light is like a scene from ‘Gone with the Wind’: had Scarlet O’Hara suddenly appeared saying “As God is my witness I’ll never go hungry again” I would not have been surprised. Add to that, the musical score was better suited to an American western and so ‘War Horse’ disappointed at that level. But what was really unforgivable was that the horse wasn’t credited! Very un-British I would have thought. The horse was terrific. Three stars for the horse, special effects and the cast.
sweet movie but a little slow to start.
I agree with many of you here, it's a very Disney movie. Very well made, but too cliched and predictable for me.
Excellent but somewhat sad
Everyone in the world should see this movie to remind all why we never want to see mankind going to war ever again
This movie was worth watching we did enjoy it.
Excellent movie, the war horse was so great to watch but it was a sad story
The horse was the best thing in this movie.
A bit cheezy. Excellent production.
Very disappointing. The storyline was completely far fetched, corny and unbelievable. I knew all the way through that they would be reunited in the end which I found too difficult to believe. Predictable. I enjoyed the scenery. Thats about it.
Would definitely recommend. A beautiful patchwork of events.
The movie was a fantastic event and would watch it over and over again.
This was beautifully filmed and scripted. Not as sad as I was led to believe, which is a good thing! Thoroughly enjoyable and the scenery in the beginning is breathtaking.
Not sure why people are reccommending this for children given the amount of violence and blood. I wouldnt let my children watch it! However it was enjoyable and emotionally tugging. It was what I expected it to be and I wasnt disappointed.
Top movie. Spielberg has done it again!
A lovely movie! I've seen it twice and have enjoyed it both times and think the scenery and cinematography was great. In some ways the ending seemed to be a little implausible but it still had a lovely 'human touch' to it.
The best film in ages. Great storyline, fantastic plot, great script and some of the finest cinematography you wil ever see. 5 stars!!
Beautifully filmed but the story was full of continuity issues and unbelievable situations.....seriously the Nazi's search your entire house and they don't see two horses upstairs in the bedroom! The storyline wasn't credible and very disappointing coming from Speilberg. Over hyped film, although the horse was amazing and full marks for the horse trainer.
Excellent movie and excellent story.
I thought this was a fine movie, and definitely one of Spielberg's best efforts for quite some time. Admittedly I didn't know much about the movie going into it, so I was pleasantly surprised. I didn't mind the sentimentality, which can be off-putting for some. Outstanding cinematography. Was glad I watched it.
Lovely movie, steven S at his best, no detail overlooked, nice to see a movie that has no "big names" and still be able to compete. and shine.
loved the movie, wanted to the horse to get a medal though
War Horse is a fabulous film, by a great filmmaker in Stephen Speilberg, who knows how to pull at the audience's heartstrings. It's a bold, exquisite family film.
Well filmed but over-sentimental, rated M but the storyline was more like a kids Disney movie. Should have been made for children without the violence.
yes only 3 stars for me ;somewhat disappionting considering all the media hype that given to this film and the reputation of the director
One of those that should be watched on the big screen. Great storyline.
Very slow to start with and fairly predictable throughout the movie. Nothing special though, I was expecting a lot more. I watched Australian Story about the woman who trained the horses and she was promised one of the horses after filming and chose her favourite one, after which she was told, "Any horse but that one." She was fighting to get the horse so I wonder whether she did in the end?
Cliched, overly medodramatic, with incredibly wooden acting. Haven't walked out of a theatre so disappointed in a long time. The horse is definitely the best actor, along with Emily Mortimer.
Great movie. We enjoyed the feisty courage of the horse & although the war is the main setting, there's a feeling of hope coming through. Some parts are implausible, but then so life can be.
A wonderful story focusing on the beauty and intelligent of the horse and its bond with its master. Even in desperate times that bond is never lost. Compelling viewing.
Nice cinematography but a disappointing Spielberg effort. No substantial story line but great acting by the horse "Joey". Ho hum movie.
Beautifully shot, corny schmaltz.
War horse is a must see awesome movie
Being a horse lover, I was really looking forward to this one. It was a nice movie - although a little sentimental for my liking...
overall a good no brainer movie to watch -
Reasonably enjoyable film. Would be great for kids, not so much for adults
This was a wonderful movie I cried a little' and laughed at some parts especially the goose. I can safely say this is a very good movie
overacting and terrible direction
It had lots of suspense, enjoyable film.
God only knows how they trained that horse to do what it had to do in this film. A magnificent equine. A bit of a tearjerker in parts and a little too sentimental, but then most war and horse stories are. I enjoyed it...when I wasn't tearing up - 3.5 stars
Brilliant movie. Best we've seen in a long while.
Not his best but quite enjoyable.
I was really looking forward to seeing this movie, and it didn't disappoint. Like reading a novel, it takes time to unfold. A great rainy day movie, thoroughly recommended. Would def watch it again.
I had high hopes for this after seeing an excerpt of the training of the horses. beautiful horse but thats about it. overly sentimental in almost every part of the film - so much so we were laughing and groaning where there should have been heartfelt emotion.
What an EPIC movie! The story was realistic, the scenes were very very real (as only Spielberg can do).. and yeah I cried my eyes out... The length was right. the story line was excellent.
A must se for everyone, especially animal/horse lovers.
7 out of 5 stars!
This is a Lovely Story with a few tear-jerking moments, Higly Recommended... not Spielberg's usual Deal however he has done a great job with this one
Great!! Watched it 3 times though not completely 100% satisfied. The start drags on a bit and sometimes the soundtrack is not too suited for the occaion. wasnt too emotional for me but still enjoyed it as a horselover and any other horselover will adore this film too.
Tries way too hard to be epic. This is Spielberg's Lawrence of Arabia/Gone With The Wind or something and it's corny, overlong, tugs at your heartstrings so hard it'll give you heartburn, and doesn't have much to say. Unless you really love horses, or Spielberg, avoid. Please stick with sci-fi Steve.
A wonderful story, so beautifully told.
Wonderful movie, but I spent a lot of time crying. Anyone who loves animals, horses in particular, will love it. It is about so much more than just the horse and that makes it one of the greatest movie I have seen for a while.
Can't believe this is a Spielberg movie?! could have been a Disney film. Very disappointing. Movie drags on. No real moments that had me on the edge of my seat.. However I've seen worse. Its actually not bad that bad if you enjoy it with your wife and kids. Not a movie to put on when you have some friends over for a movie night.. than it gets boring real fast..
Loved it. Would watch it more than once.
Quite disappointing. Very predicable and almost corny. Totally unbelievable storyline. Spielberg has certainy done better.
Absolutely breath taking, fantastic movie
What a great story line, it was very uplifting to see even in times of war that something as simple as horse could bring opposites side together to help the life of a needy animal, I loved this movie for the picture it gave not only the treatment of horses, but also the way mankind treated each other, it was not always as bad as we have all pictured war, there were also gracious people aswell.
Nice entertaining movie. A little far fetched at times
Wow, what film is everyone else here watching? I was so disappointed by it. I found it to be wildly unsubtle and manipulative. The film virtually dictates how you're supposed to feel at any given moment, but it does nothing to earn any of your emotions. Every character, from the plummy British officers to the stoic mother to the twitty French girl, is a cliche. I wanted to like this film, but found it unconvincing in the extreme.
Interesting special effects but rather a 'Lassie come home" story but with a horse.
Great movie that suits a range of people. Very moving. Recommend it to anyone.
Great Movie -Worth watching every second
glad to have watched this at home, hate to see any sort of suffering (human or animal) and, yes, it is a Spielberg film and he knows how to tug at emotions with poetic licence, but it is emotional and, at times, horrific.War is not pretty. Did find the English speaking Germas hard ro swallow, but wouldn't have been the same with sub-titles!! I sone I will add to my collection to watch again
A bit disappointed after all the hype over this movie. The horses were beautiful and the depictions of war were moving. I loved how the humanity of both the english and germans were shown equally.
excellent movie, very moving my daughter cried.
A bit far fetched in places but overall a good movie.
Must be one of the finest movies of ww1. The movie has evereything,.The love of a boy for his horse is so emotional that all who view it can't help but but wipe away an occasional tear. It also shows that all enemies can normal human beings even in time of wa.
I would give it 5/5
What a great movie. I don't normaly like war movies but it was necessary to see how poor Joey was treated, What an incredible horse and a lovely animal. The friendship between Joey and Alby was lovely to watch. I have to add it to the list to watch again. Yes their was tears at what Joey went through very sad in parts.
very good movie well proudce and actored
Brilliant movie deep, touching, emotional and breath takeing, personnallyl I don't like 'war' themed movies BUT this is just so very much more, a movie of unconditional love and strength. Must have the tissues handy, if you don't cry in this one you don't have a heart! ! ! !
A bit long and not the director's best but very enjoyable and moving, sure its a load of rubbish but Speilberg know's how to make this sirt of film, one of the best horses I have ever seen too, very beautiful & smart! My 9 & 7 yr olds were able to watch even with the war scenes, this is not 'Private Ryan
Great movie - one of Spielberg'"s best. Good to see a heartwarming (and sad at times) story these days. Keep the tissues handy
great movie, enjoyed watching. needed tissues.
I agree-a bit corny at times but overall very good. Beautiful horses too.
Really enjoyed this movie, was captivated throughout so true what someone said below .. both heartbreaking and heartwarming. I found it difficult to watch in one part (but i break down when animals are involved in any type of suffering!) obviously a bit of a fairy tale but done very well. Brilliant!
The promos of this movie did not appeal to me but I really enjoyed it. I found it a bit corny at times but enjoyed it and would watch it again.
A nice bit of fantasy for the Disney set. If you can live without horses try Europa Europa.
Epic, long, wonderful photography, stirring music and a sentimental story. Unfortunately it's more a fairy tale than anything remotely believable. And as in many films, having foreigners speaking English to each other with put-on accents is simply silly.
Spielberg at his best. Don't pass up the chance to see this film! If you didn't want to cry in the cinema (which I did) now's your chance to view this beautiful heartwarming movie in the comfort of your own lounge room. Don't forget to stock up on the tissues though.
Potentially Steven Spielberg's best film in almost ten years. It is a little bit too sentimental at times, but besides that the film does a wonderful job at recreating the horrors of the First World War and presenting the intense friendship between one young man and his horse. One of the best films of 2011, a must see.
One of the best horse movies of all time. Very touching and will remember it for a very long time! Loved it!! I think everyone, including the men, had a few tears.
Loved the film, though its early in the year, I think I may have a favourite. It's emotional, strong, heartbreaking at times and heartwarming at others. For the particularly animal strong a little heads-up, my gushy friend cried multiple times. And even though I often find war scenes unmoving and more to the point unbelievable, Speilburg keeps to his famously real screenplay and those with these animals tore at my heart, having a bit of a teary myself.
Hits all targets for me and I think almost any female will thoroughly enjoy, though my partner also enjoyed himself.
