Curving bullets and Jolie's curves

Listen, we've been really lucky with action movies this year. We've had The Dark Knight, Iron Man, and Cloverfield, just to name a few. We've been given quite a few intelligent, heart-pounding action films, when normally we have to put up with another Fantastic Four movie. However, there has been something missing this year. It's blood. I've seen no blood this year. In fact, I haven't seen blood in a big movie for a couple of years. Think about it. Transformers, Pirates, even Die Hard. There was no blood in Die Hard 4. That's like having no magic in Harry Potter. So I could barely hold my excitement for Wanted, a film that promised a lot of blood. In fact, Wanted promised a lot, and for the most part, delivered.

The thing is, Wanted should have been perfect. It featured the holy trinity of action films: 1. Ridiculous high-octane action scenes; 2. Angelina Jolie naked, and 3. Morgan Freeman with a gun. It was exciting, and kind-of funny, but it wasn't great.

I suppose I should describe the story of Wanted, but I would doubt anyone who is planning on seeing it really cares. They, like me, probably saw Jolie straddling the hood of a car with a machine gun and were all-but lining up at the cinema on opening night. But for the sake of a traditional review, here goes. James McAvoy plays Wesley Gibson, a nervous and depressed office drone. His girlfriend is cheating on him with his best friend, his boss can make him virtually roll into a fetal ball, and even his ATM tells him what a loser he is.

That is until he meets Fox (Jolie), a slinky super-assassin who informs him that the father he never knew was a trained killer. Fox and Wesley's father belonged to The Fraternity, a secret organisation headed by the mysterious Sloan (Freeman), and developed by weavers (yes, as in textile weavers) over 1000 years ago. However, one of the member's has gone postal, and is knocking off Fraternity members one by one, starting with Wesley's dad. So begins the ultimate male fantasy - the insignificant Wesley is turned into a super-killer who sprints atop of trains, makes bullets curve around corners, and then totally makes-out with Jolie.

And that's pretty much it. Sure, there are a couple of twists here and there. They also attempt to explain how the Fraternity receives its hit-list (if I told you it was from a magical loom, would you say I was crazy?). But this is more than you really need to know. The film is all about action, and there is plenty of it. There is a great car chase at the start (yes, the one with Jolie on the hood), and an amazing scene set on a train as it falls down a mountain. James McAvoy steals the show with a final gunfight that is the equivalent of the Crazy 88's fight at the end of Kill Bill 1.

Unfortunately, the rest of the action falls a little flat. Normally this wouldn't be a problem. But action is all this film has. Your enjoyment of the action scenes will depend on whether you like the style of director Timur Bekmambetov (Night Watch, Day Watch). His slow-motion, follow-the-bullet-into-the-head-of-the-victim-and-then-show-it-in-reverse effect gets tired pretty quickly. Also, the whole curving bullet aspect isn't as cool as I had hoped. After all, how can you ever feel as if the main characters life is in danger when they can literally deflect oncoming bullets with their own.

Also, I'm always willing to suspend my belief in films that require it, but at one point a bullet curves in complete circle. Would the bullet ever stop? I was expecting that by the time the bullet made one full lap, the entire universe would implode due to its disregard of the laws of physics. But it didn't. I suppose it would have made for a weird ending if it did.

I walked into the cinema blood-thirsty, and I left feeling satiated. But not completely satisfied. Blood is nice, but I'd prefer a little bit more excitement. The film is imaginative, well-made and very violent. But ultimately, it didn't make my heart race. However, Wanted is pushed slightly over the line thanks to a couple of scenes that were really awesome. In fact, since the story is irrelevant, maybe the DVD could come with a 20-minute ultimate edition. All it needs is the car chase, the train crash and the final shootout and I'd be happy. Oh, and Angelina of course.

3/5

Cannot really comment on this DVD with any confidence, as it kept freezing the frames for a minute or so and then starting again further into the film. Had to turn the bloody thing off in the end.

Actually the storyline to this movie is not too bad, but unfortunately the rest of the movie I found to be just ridiculous. If you are happy to watch a non sense action movie, then it may be OK for you.

Completely absurd story with unlikable and unbelievable characters. It would have suited better if it was based in an imaginary realm ran by a pack of vampires/troll cross-breeds instead (rolls eyes). This piece of crap is a woeful mix of stolen scenes from Star Wars ["Luke, I am your father"] and Minority Report [kill them before they can hurt someone!]. Strangely enough, it has somehow managed to lure in some "famous" (ie. recognizable) names to "act" (ie. flay around) and carry it along on their shoulders.

Notching close to a 2 and a half. Rather B Grade, but not bad if you like a few litlle horror episodes. A little hard to follow, this is not Angellina's best by far. She is rather impressive and dark. She is capable of much better quality work than this. There is a lot of swearing in this film.

If I never see a slow-motion bullet again I'll be happy. An OK movie however how many shots of slow-mo bullets can one take? James McAvoy an interesting casting choice. Ange looks surprisingly haggard.

A weird but fantasticly screwed movie! I did not think that there was enough plot to the story line. And it was either a very basically written script or it was a poor performance on most of the actor's parts. But loved the action!

The key to enjoying this movie is to go in without high expectations. I was actually pleasantly surprised by how much I liked this film. Intriguing concepts, great action sequences. Sure, they could have given us more in terms of character depth - they all seemed a bit shallow - and the twists and turns weren't very dramatic because they didn't give us enough details to invest in the story, but other than that, I wouldn't mind watching it again.

I was really disappointed with this movie... I'm a fan of the action genre and of the cast of this movie but just found it lacking something! The action scenes are realy good but the soundtrack is definately the best thing about the movie and apart from one good twist in the storyline it all seemed a bit cheesy and predictable...

Even though the story is loosely based on the comic 'Wanted' it's plot doesn't resemble the original. At least the comic made sense, this doesn't. Some of the action sequences are fresh and well executed, while others are a bit of a yawn. The dialogue is not good enough to give the stars much to work with, but there seems to be a lack of feeling in the acting - as if they are going through the motions just to pick up their pay cheque. I had to force myself to watch to the end.

Having read the comic years ago I have to admit that this movie is actually better structurally than the comic book. Its not a normal shoot em up movie because of the element of the fantastic in what the main characters can do, making it more far fetched than movies like Transporter and Hit Man. McAvoy suits the role of the loser going through the motions of his boring life and Angelina as an beautiful assassin, well that's not much of stretch for her now is it. ;-) Worth a look.

I laughed out loud at the preposterous stunts; clich? platitudes; and insanely wooden acting. I scoffed every time the main character delivered a line. And I wondered to myself, what boyhood dream cooked up this blatant rip-off of: Matrix special effects, American Psycho detachment, Fight Club loner mentality and hyper masculinity. None of it works! It?s as if a group of ten year olds were given free range to produce a film with unlimited budget. MIND BOGGLING!

Go into this movie with anything other than an open mind and an escapist point of view and you will be disappointed. This movie is purely a fantastical special effects heavy ride with some laugh out loud moments not so much because they are meant to be funny, rather because they are so far out there (the scene with the guy getting shot through the sunroof springs to mind). I found myself feeling a kind of excitement and enjoyment much the way I felt when I was 12 years old and watching martial arts movies for the first time. A good fun movie not to be taken seriously like any good action movie should be.

For a movie that was touted to rival "The Matrix", this disappoints on all counts. Lacking the rich mythology and storylines of The Matrix, Wanted suffers in both regards. A comic book action feature would justify the stylised action sequences and even perhaps the mindless violence. However, it does not excuse the one-dimensional characters and the extremely dilute plotlines. A waste of good actors.

Being unfamiliar with the graphic novel I feel this is a good movie with a bad ending. For all those comic fans who feel cheated by the adaptation, as a lifelong Stephen King fan I can relate. Sometimes you wonder why they go through all the bother of buying film rights and then make something different, especially as I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry proves you can just steal the idea and get away with it anyway.

Some silly action sequences, and a pretty weak storyline. There are some good parts but they don't really happen enough. Not sure James McAvoy was right for this and Angelie Jolie looked way too skinny. Shades of The Matrix but not enough going for it.

Total Waste of time. Really exaggerated acting from normally good actors. Very deliberated and relied too heavily on special effects and not enough on a decent storyline. My boyfriend and I could not even get through this. Turned it off about half way through. Angelina Jolie looked great as usual but this is not enough of a reason to watch an otherwise extremely bad film.

A bit less surreal action and a bit more of a storyline would have improved the film significantly. It seems that somebody assumed men are really simple structured: a lot of action and a nice woman (Angelina Jolie) - that's the way to attract men. But sorry, a bit more effort next time would be helpful ;-)
