Brilliant. Both lead actors inhabit the characters without drawing attention to themselves. Great story of a flawed and damaged person doing his best. Soundtrack is an absolute winner (and I'm not a JC fan)
Was really interested in his lifestory, lots I didnt know. I enjoyed watching it.
Great film, even for a non-country music lover like me. Great performances from lead actors.
This is one excellent portrayal of Johnny Cash's rise to fame and fortune and the ups and downs that he went through. It's actually quite sad watching this now knowing that this iconic musical legend has now passed on. Excellent film and well worth watching.
Biography of Johnny Cash and his rise to fame. It doesn't conceal any of his shortcomings and explains why he turned out the way he did. The two lead actors are brilliant, Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon, as they both do all the singing as expertly as the real Johnny Cash and June Carter. The concert in Folsom Prison is the pivotal moment in Cash's life as it was the first time he did something for others - previously his life was very self-centred. Entertaining, although a little predictable. If you don't know his music very well, you'll like it after seeing this movie.
Walk the Line was well done and well acted, although I felt it was a little long. It was entertaining, though.
we enjoyed it. great acting and very entertaining.
yes ok , makes one rememeber him
If you like country music and stories about men finding their true path and being saved by the love of a good woman, then you'd probably enjoy this more than I did. Three stars because it was well made and a good window into weird 1950s life in small town America, but in future I'd give this one a miss.
based on the life of Johnny Cash it's really good.
Do not miss Joaquin Phoenix in this movie. He is phenomenal in "Walk the Line". He nailed the declining Johnny Cash fabulously
throughly enjoyable, the true story of Jonney Cash held our attention right throught the film, the actors who portrayed the characters in the film did a wonderful job, top points
An interesting story - a lot like 'Ray', which I've since read is a common comparison. As compelling as Phoenix and Witherspoon were as they're respective character, I found the dialogue a little cheesy at times. That doesn't make it a bad film - just not as good as I was expecting. The performance was extraordinary for Reese Witherspoon, but just because it was a great performance for her, doesn't mean that it's great compared to other actresses nominated for awards that year - Felicity Huffman in particular.
Unbelievably good film. Phoenix and Witherspoon shine both on and off the stage. It is a fascinating insight into a troubled but brilliant man. Well acted, directed, sung, played... the list goes on. No hesitation in giving it five stars.
Not a Johnny Cash fan but got this movie out on the recommendation of a friend (obviously a fan) Found it an interesting and sensitive portrayal of a man launched into the spotlight and his journey to hell and back.
Sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll. Singer sinks into a drug abyss. Seeks redemption through the girl he loves. They live happily ever after... We've seen it all before. This version is quite good and has the novelty of the two lead actors singing remarkably well and sounding almost like the originals - but not quite. If they did, they'd surely be pop singers and not actors.
Wow! I had only ever heard the most famous of Johnny Cash's songs in the past and read some articles about his drug troubles but this has made me want to check out all the man's music. Fascinating from beginning to end and never lagging at any point. The various live performance re-created in the film have an amazing energy and the scene at Folsom Prison is definatley one of the major highlights.
If you've ever enjoyed Johnny's music or been interested in him in any way and you havent already, WATCH THIS FILM!
This movie is one I could watch over
Absolutely excellent. I had no interest in the subject matter and watched it only because I'd read some good reviews. Very glad I did. Phoenix and Witherspoon were brilliant - the characterisations kept me engrossed throughout and their singing was spot on.
love this movie watch it over and over not a cash fan but have been singing all tha songs when bored
love this movies watch it over and over not a johnny cash fan but since watching this movies can't stop singing the songs plus the song i got stripes
As a movie, it's not that bad. Performances are good, etc etc. however I found it impossible to feel any sense of sympathy for the character of Johnny Nash, who is portrayed as a self-absorbed, drug addicted narcissist.
Pitching this film as a 'love story' is deranged. Aside from his rampant neglect of his first wife and children, the 'love of his life', June, was bullied and harrassed throughout the film until she eventually agrees to marry him.
I'm not sure how to rate this as a film. I think the fact that the director seems to be sympathetic towards this man and thinks that this is a love story is enough to give it a very low star rating. The moral compass in Hollywood is proven again to be way off the mark.
I found Walk the line a really good film. Joaquin and Reece were outstanding as johnny and June. I have seen the film a couple of times and I enjoyed it both times. I feel they projected johnny and june down to believable portrayals.
The story wasnt too long and was was enjoyable
Didn't know the story and was really suprised at how good it was. Great acting and cast.
I was never interested in this movie, but decided to give it a try. Wow. I really enjoyed it.
enjoyed it very much and so true to his life,I didn'nt know he had 3 daughters to his 1st wife so that was good to find out John and June would have been soul mates as their love endured all. Is Joaquin and River Phoenix brothers, would really like to know,Johnny Cash was acted so well by Joaquin and will be remembered for his role,
A portrait of a great performer that, despite having some good moments, badly misses the mark as drama. The movie has been put together as a series of episodes with no connecting story-line. Years are leapfrogged with no explanation, and well-known performers come and go without an indication of who they are. The voice of Joaquin Phoenix is hardly the rich baritone we are all familiar with, and the actor's personality doesn't begin to measure up to that of Johnny Cash as seen on stage and evident in countless film clips. A 'B' movie at best.
My mum use to absolutely love Johnny Cash and would play him all the time when we were young. Although I wasn't really into his music then... I really love hearing it now. Really good movie... great acting!
Wonderful movie - an insight into a legend. I grew up in the 'Johnny Cash' era and really enjoyed this movie. The songs were terrific - I just can't believe that the actors actually sang the songs themselves!
Never heard music from Johnnie before but will now. Wonderful movie about a great love. Only mistake was, he had four kids with his first wife.
A fantastic film that shows the dangers of fame. With a good romantic story as well.
We really enjoyed this film. I'm not really a JC fan but it was more about the relationship between June Carter and Johnny Cash. The leads handled the singing really well. A great way to spend an evening.
a fine biopic, bit of a chick flick too (in the same way Casablanca is a chick flick for guys, maybe), good performances though I thought Joaquin was a bit petite to be convincing as Johnny Cash.
We enjoyed the musical parts throughout and thereis plenty of it. The family story line is not so good as Cash had a harsh father and turned out to be not so pleasant himself with addiction problems. Good film, tough subject matter.
Fantastic, again reese witherspoon proves how great an actress she is
This was a good movie. The insight into "what made him" was excellent. Reese Witherspoon stole the show and without her, I think it would not have done as well. I expected better because of the awards it has won but overall it was a good watch.
I heard that this film was brilliant especially the peroformances of both both lead actors. Not knowing a lot about Johnny Cash was an advantage as I was not sure what to expect. Thoroughly enjoyed it, didn't even mind the music, which isn't my thing normally.
Surprisingly good for a rise-to-fame movie. Both leads were well cast and Reese Witherspoon amazed me with her perfect country singing voice and persona. By far her most interesting role. She deserved her Oscar.
I really enjoyed walk the line.
i always liked johnny cash's songs and was expecting to be dissapointed in the move but it was excellent.
i was worried that johnny cash and june carter weren't singing the songs but joaquin phoenix and reese witherspoon were very, very good.
Really interesting movie, it was a great piece of history without letting you get bored, great cast :)
I see why Reeset got best supporting actress..wonderful performance..Phoenix was wooden..the singing fantastic..a must see for Cash fans
Forgot I had already seen before when I ordered but loved it first time, second time and would watch again! interesting, learn a lot about Johhny Cash that you don't know.
I thoughly enjoyed the film. It is a excellent movie for both men and women to watch.
I loved Phoenix in the role of JC. I soo understand JC more than I did b4. I remember seeing him in concert in the 90s an loved him.
Reese did a fantastic job as Carter.
All in all, a fantastic movie for all JC or Reese idolisers
Excellent movie. I learnt a lot about the man. The actors were well cast in this movie.
Until you watch movies such as this one you really have no idea what these particular people had to endure through their careers and how they got to where they did.
tap.tap.tap.tap......I hear the train coming ...Its like being at the Grand Old Oprey and Joaquin is so good and man can he sing he is better than Reece I think even though she wins the award
Its pure Cash and great entertainment
good acting terrific movie especially if you like Johnny Cash Loved it
Brilliant. Reece & Joaquin sang the songs - they were not dubbed. Brilliant.
Loved it! Thought Reese Witherspoon was fantastic.
I felt the story was just getting going when the movie finished and I felt it could have had more music content. A slow movie.
Very entertaining - Joaquin Phoenix was gritty and convincing as Johnny Cash and Reese Witherspoon was beautiful as June Carter.
Enjoyed this one, well crafted. Yes, I grew up to his music, but this wasn't so much about the music. I think you will either love it or hate it.
I thought this was very dark and left me not liking JC anymore. But after the way his father treated him I guess you can't blame him for being who he was.
Great movie. Loved the music and acting.
great movie, loved every second of it!!
I couldn't watch it, all the high pitched twangy music was too painful to listen to, I couldn't do it!
Surprisingly I liked it, in spite of not being a Johnny Cash fan in the past. It was a sensitive film, ably acted by Joaquin Phoenix & Reese Witherspoon who could make magic with the Cash songs. I'm not sure that being a success is a much better proposition than being a failure as an entertainer! Would Cash have been aware that all the harrowing, sordid details of his life were going to be exposed? Would be hard to take!
great movie well worth watching
This is a great movie even for those who are not Johnny Cash fans, it has a great story and terrific music.
Not my type of movie...too long boring story but love Reese
Always loved Johnny Cash, so biassed towards this movie and his music.
Much better than I anticipated. Similar vein to Ray, but less cheesy by far. The cheesiest part was Reese, and boy was was she excellent. Never thought I would see T-1000 pull off a great cameo as 'Daddy'. When is the sequel?
Excellent acting. Engaging from start to end.
Good music, Phoenix is believable as Cash
Okay, so I'm not a Johnny Cash or June Carter Cash fan, but I was still interested to see what kind of job Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon did with the roles and I think they did an excellent job. The 'flavour' of the era was very well caught and it was nice to learn that 'JR' hung out with the likes of Jerry Lee Lewis, Roy Orbison and Waylon Jennings.
Even a young Elvis turns up at Sun Records, although the actor playing him didn't really work for me, unlike the guy who played Lewis who was perfect
(even better than Dennis Quaid in Great Balls of Fire). Although I never really warmed to the Cash character, I found Phoenix's portrayal very convincing, especially the singing and although I'm not that familiar with Cash's stage persona, I recognised the way he held the guitar (high up) and the way he held his head, his phrasing and general stage posture. Phoenix obviously did his homework and it pays off. In some of the wide angle shots especially, it could easily be the real Cash. Reese Witherspoon is also totally convincing as June Carter Cash and the rest of the cast is also top notch. Even if you're not a Cash fan, it's well worth seeing.
a nice documentation about the life of JOHNNY CASH!
I loved this movie so much I wanted to give it 6 stars. Powerful performances from Phoenix and Witherspoon.
Loved it learned a lot about the man in black. Great movie.
good performances, but the pop star story is nothing new
Loved the music and the film
Im not sure that Joaquin Phoenix gets away with playing Johnny Cash???
Good performance by Reece Witherspoon - quite a sad story but a good watch
This is a fantastic movie. Reece and Joaquim really were great. Highly recommended.
Very good performances by the main actors
Not what I expected but interesting
Actors did a great job especially the singing but didn't like the story much-a bit fragmented
great portrail of a country music legend. factual pretty accurate although June in real life was older than Johnny. definately oscar worthy preformances from both Reese and Joaquin. Remarkably both preformed their own songs and music.
Reece is great in this movie. Fun to watch.
As often happens when there has been a lot of hype about a movie,I was a little disappointed with the actuality.A good story but I found it hard to relate it to the image of Johhny Cash that I was familiar with.Shame to burst the bubble really
excellent - loved it!!! have been listening to soundtrack non stop.
Being a fan of Johnny Cash, I wasnt sure if Joaquin Pheonix would deliver, but was pleasantly surprised! Reese Witherspoon was also believable. I certainly enjoyed the fall and rise of the man in black. Made all the better by the characters. Recommended!
Great movie with excellent story and fantastic actors
Great performances - especially the singing
Superb and highly convincing performances. The subject matter was handled sensitively, not a country music cliche in sight!
Was worth watching. Acting was good. Bit too long.
Fantasstic movie, loved it!
Didn't realise how bad Johnny Cash struggled with his life, great actors
A good mix of story plus the great music of Johny Cash
It has some awesome performances! Definitely a great movie to watch!
Excellent, a encourgeing movie, Helps you to see you can over come problems and improve your life. Great Story, didn't want to miss a minute.
Walk the Line is a compelling movie which gives you an insight into the life of Johnny Cash. Although I was not a fan of his music prior to the film, I have gained a newfound interest in his music. What an interesting account of his life.
not a johnny cash fan but really enjoyed this movie. Excellent story line and acting
It took a while to get into it but it was aheartfelt movie you could associate yourself with it . I give it thumbs up
I kept this movie for 3 weeks. I was captivated by trueness and the quality of the musical performances. I recommend this to any Johnny Cash fan.
I thought Reece Witherspoon was excellent , overall the acting was great. It was interesting learning about thier private lives as well as the climb to singing stardom.
Very well acted and worth watching only because it's a true story.
If you're a Cash fan this is very good.
Good story. A bit long but definately worth watching. The music was great.
I wanted to watch this movie because I met Johnny Cash socially while hitch-hiking round Europe with a friend. We hadn't been to a concert and I don't think I'd ever heard him sing. This was an opportunity to learn more about his early days. I knew nothing of his marriage to June. I thoroughly enjoyed the singing - the whole thing.
I thought this would be not so good as I dont know much about Johnny Cash, but I enjoy it very much, it was a wonderfully created movie about John and June.
Loved this movie but I was a Johnny Cash fan.
Stunning portrayal by Joaquim Phoenix of the troubled, brooding 'Man In Black' - Johnny Cash. Reese Witherspoon - handpicked by June Carter Cash to play her on-screen - nearly steals the show. Not just for country music fans!
Thoroughly enjoyed, didn't want it to end
Great movie. Not a fan of this genre, nor of Johnny Cash but we all enjoyed this from start to finish including a 16 year old who thinks Rock n Roll is a skateboard move. Surprised to find that vocals were all actually sung by stars Phoenix and Witherspoon.
It was a truely touching movie. The actors were fantastic.
Big fan of Johnny Cash's music...what a tragic life he led. Phoenix & Witherspoon were brilliant, as were the cast and the story.
Found this great even though I am not a Johnny Cash fan in the least. Fanastic performances by Phoenix and Witherspoon.
We loved this movie, we saw it at the movies and had to see it again. Johhny Cash had a sad lonely life and June Carter was the making of the man. Excellent acting made this movie very enjoyable.
Good pace, very entertaining. I'm not a Johnny Cash fan ... but I enjoyed the film
Fantastic portrayal by two very talented actors.
Never rated Johnny Cash as a singer and still dont but Phoenix and Witherspoon made his story come to life
Really great movie and the singing was great
good movie, even better music
An excellent biography of the early years of two fantastic performers.
If you like Johny Cash's Songs& are interested in his career then this is a must see especially all the country & western Fans
Really enjoyed this movie, lives up to the hype! Reese Witherspoon & Joaquim Phoenix were excellent!
An excellent biopic about Johnny Cash and his one true love June Carter. I grew up with my mother playing his music and this movie gave me some background on his rise to fame. Great performances from the lead actors and amazing that Phoenix and Witherspoon have great vocal range as demonstrated here with them doing all their own singing in the roles. ****HIGHLY RECOMMENDED****
I thought this was an OK movie. Nothing fantastic. Reese Witherspoon was fantastic as usual. The storyline wasn't really fulfilled enough for me, they left alot out. The singing wasn't even Johnny Cash's voice which was disappointing too. Ok if there's nothing else on TV.
One of the best movies I've seen. Both Witherspoon and Phoenix are AMAZING! What a great love story between Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash; it doesn't get any better than this. Honest, real, alive, and full of great music and top performances!
I really loved this movie. My only wish is that Johnny cash and june carter were singing instead of actors but never the less it was great.
My husband has been a fan of Johnny Cash since he was a little boy and saw him in concert when he came to Australia some 25 years ago. We thought it was an excellent movie and even our 14 year old son throughly enjoyed it. The producers did an good job in picking these particular actors for the movie.
I think Walk the Line was a top movie, the actors were well choosen.
Didn't know much about Johnny Cash before I watched this movie.. now I want
to know more about the man in black & his music. Both Witherspoon & Phoenix
were amazing, loved that they used their own voices. A real tale of Rock-n-Roll
and a true love story warts & all.
Surprisingly top movie. Covers the early years of this famous Country Singer and gives you a real insight into one of the famous couples in the music industry.
Excellent movie. Fantastic performances from Reese & Joaquin.
enjoyed this movie well told about his life and what can happen to a singer under pressure
Not a Johnny Cash fan but the movie was brilliant - strong performances, enthralling true story. Excellent!
This was engrossing, while not a huge Cash fan, the story and singing was excellent, it had us all glued to the screen. I would recommend this to anyone wanting a damn good movie.
found a compelling story, both actors portrayed the singers well. Made you want to go and buy his records/DVD's from the prison.
well done, like movies that are based on true stories
Great story - great ending.
Loved it...
Great acting and singing by Joaquin Phoenix & Reese Witherspoon, however the screenplay and the sound track were disappointing.
Great! great! script, music, actors!
Really loved this movie.....thought the lead roles were excellent & I didn't realise how little I knew about Johnny Cash's life until I saw this movie. A movie you could certainly watch again.
Well acted with superb singing. It gave me an insight into Johnny Cash's life and how hard situations got for him. To escape the reality of his life he turns to drugs and music. It was a good thing that he met someone that truly loved him. I liked the bonus features particularly the commentary and deleted scenes.
Thought the first half of the story was fairly routine and predictable. The actors were more believable from then on. Reece Witherspoon was well cast, a good performance by the two leads, As a support actor, Robert Patrick was great as Cash's father.
Was never a huge Johnny Cash fan, but felt this movie was done exceptionally well. Joaquin's deliverance of the character was well worth the Oscar he received.
I quite liked it, good performances but at times it felt a little slow to me. Worth renting however.
Good for the performaces. Reese was great, put on a believable southern accent.
Interesting even though I didn't know the characters. Elvis even makes an appearance
Great Acting and a great story!!
All most as good as the man.
Johny Cash
A great story made into a great movie.
Johnny Cash wasnt my era, but it was a nice love story. Would have probably enjoyed it more, if I was familiar with the music.
I don't mind Johnny Cash music but didn't know too much about his life going into this. Really enjoyed the movie - good story, good performances and of course the music
I love a great epic that spans the life of a person from pauper to prince, and this fulfills the genre perfectly. The music and songs are great, even if (like me), you are mostly unaware of who Johnny Cash was or the music he plays. Excellent viewing.
Excellent Movie, I Recomend!!
Doesn't leave you feeling that Johnny Cash was the nicest guy. And being a true story it moves along pretty slow. Not bad though.
Interesting biographical story, with a greater feeling of reality than many Hollywood representations. The movie belongs to Reese Witherspoon, for me.
Loved the music. Was a bit drawn out in parts. Reese played a great part, but again, as with most oscar winning movies, a tad disappointing. Glad not to have paid money in the cinema for it. Good for a rainy day or over a few drinks to listen to the music.
Fantastic - great performances
If American Country music isn't your cup of tea then I suggest you don't bother watching this one unless you've run out of other choices and you're in need of a movie fix. It's Ok, but the music grated so much that it ruined the overall affect. Just another ho hum muso, sleepin' around, doin' drugs and feelin' sorry for himself.
Phoenix was excellent but Witherspoon was unconvincing playing the role of June Carter. Aside from that the film was very entertaining and if it closely followed the life of Cash it was a bit of an eye opener.
Not a great fan of Country & Western but a great story well acted.
Great performances all round and a moving story
This movie gives a behind the scenes look at the background and ups and downs in the life and career of the legendary Johnny Cash.
Pretty much how I expected it would be like, but I did enjoy the music and singing.
Recommended for those who like his songs and style of music.
I have never liked country music or country rock. Having said that, this movie is brilliant in all respects. The man (Johnny Cash) is a legend and the storyline is fantastic and absolutely outstanding performances by Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon make this one of the most enjoyable movies to watch.
Not a Johnny Cash fan but the performances really were fantastic.
