Brilliant. Both lead actors inhabit the characters without drawing attention to themselves. Great story of a flawed and damaged person doing his best. Soundtrack is an absolute winner (and I'm not a JC fan)

This is one excellent portrayal of Johnny Cash's rise to fame and fortune and the ups and downs that he went through. It's actually quite sad watching this now knowing that this iconic musical legend has now passed on. Excellent film and well worth watching.

Biography of Johnny Cash and his rise to fame. It doesn't conceal any of his shortcomings and explains why he turned out the way he did. The two lead actors are brilliant, Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon, as they both do all the singing as expertly as the real Johnny Cash and June Carter. The concert in Folsom Prison is the pivotal moment in Cash's life as it was the first time he did something for others - previously his life was very self-centred. Entertaining, although a little predictable. If you don't know his music very well, you'll like it after seeing this movie.

If you like country music and stories about men finding their true path and being saved by the love of a good woman, then you'd probably enjoy this more than I did. Three stars because it was well made and a good window into weird 1950s life in small town America, but in future I'd give this one a miss.

An interesting story - a lot like 'Ray', which I've since read is a common comparison. As compelling as Phoenix and Witherspoon were as they're respective character, I found the dialogue a little cheesy at times. That doesn't make it a bad film - just not as good as I was expecting. The performance was extraordinary for Reese Witherspoon, but just because it was a great performance for her, doesn't mean that it's great compared to other actresses nominated for awards that year - Felicity Huffman in particular.

Unbelievably good film. Phoenix and Witherspoon shine both on and off the stage. It is a fascinating insight into a troubled but brilliant man. Well acted, directed, sung, played... the list goes on. No hesitation in giving it five stars.

Sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll. Singer sinks into a drug abyss. Seeks redemption through the girl he loves. They live happily ever after... We've seen it all before. This version is quite good and has the novelty of the two lead actors singing remarkably well and sounding almost like the originals - but not quite. If they did, they'd surely be pop singers and not actors.

Wow! I had only ever heard the most famous of Johnny Cash's songs in the past and read some articles about his drug troubles but this has made me want to check out all the man's music. Fascinating from beginning to end and never lagging at any point. The various live performance re-created in the film have an amazing energy and the scene at Folsom Prison is definatley one of the major highlights. If you've ever enjoyed Johnny's music or been interested in him in any way and you havent already, WATCH THIS FILM!

As a movie, it's not that bad. Performances are good, etc etc. however I found it impossible to feel any sense of sympathy for the character of Johnny Nash, who is portrayed as a self-absorbed, drug addicted narcissist. Pitching this film as a 'love story' is deranged. Aside from his rampant neglect of his first wife and children, the 'love of his life', June, was bullied and harrassed throughout the film until she eventually agrees to marry him. I'm not sure how to rate this as a film. I think the fact that the director seems to be sympathetic towards this man and thinks that this is a love story is enough to give it a very low star rating. The moral compass in Hollywood is proven again to be way off the mark.

A portrait of a great performer that, despite having some good moments, badly misses the mark as drama. The movie has been put together as a series of episodes with no connecting story-line. Years are leapfrogged with no explanation, and well-known performers come and go without an indication of who they are. The voice of Joaquin Phoenix is hardly the rich baritone we are all familiar with, and the actor's personality doesn't begin to measure up to that of Johnny Cash as seen on stage and evident in countless film clips. A 'B' movie at best.

Surprisingly I liked it, in spite of not being a Johnny Cash fan in the past. It was a sensitive film, ably acted by Joaquin Phoenix & Reese Witherspoon who could make magic with the Cash songs. I'm not sure that being a success is a much better proposition than being a failure as an entertainer! Would Cash have been aware that all the harrowing, sordid details of his life were going to be exposed? Would be hard to take!

Okay, so I'm not a Johnny Cash or June Carter Cash fan, but I was still interested to see what kind of job Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon did with the roles and I think they did an excellent job. The 'flavour' of the era was very well caught and it was nice to learn that 'JR' hung out with the likes of Jerry Lee Lewis, Roy Orbison and Waylon Jennings. Even a young Elvis turns up at Sun Records, although the actor playing him didn't really work for me, unlike the guy who played Lewis who was perfect (even better than Dennis Quaid in Great Balls of Fire). Although I never really warmed to the Cash character, I found Phoenix's portrayal very convincing, especially the singing and although I'm not that familiar with Cash's stage persona, I recognised the way he held the guitar (high up) and the way he held his head, his phrasing and general stage posture. Phoenix obviously did his homework and it pays off. In some of the wide angle shots especially, it could easily be the real Cash. Reese Witherspoon is also totally convincing as June Carter Cash and the rest of the cast is also top notch. Even if you're not a Cash fan, it's well worth seeing.

Great movie. Not a fan of this genre, nor of Johnny Cash but we all enjoyed this from start to finish including a 16 year old who thinks Rock n Roll is a skateboard move. Surprised to find that vocals were all actually sung by stars Phoenix and Witherspoon.

We loved this movie, we saw it at the movies and had to see it again. Johhny Cash had a sad lonely life and June Carter was the making of the man. Excellent acting made this movie very enjoyable.

An excellent biopic about Johnny Cash and his one true love June Carter. I grew up with my mother playing his music and this movie gave me some background on his rise to fame. Great performances from the lead actors and amazing that Phoenix and Witherspoon have great vocal range as demonstrated here with them doing all their own singing in the roles. ****HIGHLY RECOMMENDED****

I thought this was an OK movie. Nothing fantastic. Reese Witherspoon was fantastic as usual. The storyline wasn't really fulfilled enough for me, they left alot out. The singing wasn't even Johnny Cash's voice which was disappointing too. Ok if there's nothing else on TV.

One of the best movies I've seen. Both Witherspoon and Phoenix are AMAZING! What a great love story between Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash; it doesn't get any better than this. Honest, real, alive, and full of great music and top performances!

My husband has been a fan of Johnny Cash since he was a little boy and saw him in concert when he came to Australia some 25 years ago. We thought it was an excellent movie and even our 14 year old son throughly enjoyed it. The producers did an good job in picking these particular actors for the movie.

Well acted with superb singing. It gave me an insight into Johnny Cash's life and how hard situations got for him. To escape the reality of his life he turns to drugs and music. It was a good thing that he met someone that truly loved him. I liked the bonus features particularly the commentary and deleted scenes.

Thought the first half of the story was fairly routine and predictable. The actors were more believable from then on. Reece Witherspoon was well cast, a good performance by the two leads, As a support actor, Robert Patrick was great as Cash's father.

I love a great epic that spans the life of a person from pauper to prince, and this fulfills the genre perfectly. The music and songs are great, even if (like me), you are mostly unaware of who Johnny Cash was or the music he plays. Excellent viewing.

If American Country music isn't your cup of tea then I suggest you don't bother watching this one unless you've run out of other choices and you're in need of a movie fix. It's Ok, but the music grated so much that it ruined the overall affect. Just another ho hum muso, sleepin' around, doin' drugs and feelin' sorry for himself.

Phoenix was excellent but Witherspoon was unconvincing playing the role of June Carter. Aside from that the film was very entertaining and if it closely followed the life of Cash it was a bit of an eye opener.
