W.E. (2012)

I loved this film and the Direction by Madonna was brilliant. What a fresh film with such an interesting and compelling interpretation of the story. I recently saw a documentary on WE and was surprised to learn Wallis Simpson felt trapped in the relationship and it wasn't the love story everyone thought it was and this portrayed this perfectly. My husband wasn't looking forward to watching it but he enjoyed it too. Madonna may not be able to act, but if this movie is anything to go by, she sure can Direct.

Good movie, worth watching, romance.

I’ll have to admit that I initially put this DVD in my queue because the film was directed by Madonna, I remembered that it didn’t get much of a run in the cinema when it was released. I was pleasantly surprised that it is such a good film, particularly given that it is Madonna’s directorial debut. The film shifts back and forth between two stories involving women named Wallis; the historical one and a modern one named after her. There is not much of a plot as such but the film very cleverly moves between the stories (and in some points they intersect) and it makes for quite interesting viewing. The film is very well-constructed in that it looks good overall and very skilfully blends a multitude of sources; modern day, recreations of the past and even some real historical footage. The casting of Andrea Riseborough as Wallis Simpson is fantastic, firstly because she looks so much like the real person but also because her performance is so convincing. The story essentially revolves around her (the film is not made in the way of a traditional biopic nor does it use the more conventional flashback to the past style) so her performance is critical to the film’s success. Other actors in this movie give good performances, even if most of them only have short scenes and/or minimal dialogue. Finally, the music in this film is also worth a mention. Surprisingly there is only one contribution by Madonna herself and the song only makes it in to the closing credits. The film score is very good, not too intrusive and is also worked in to one of the film’s storylines.

I found this too confusing, jumping around from one Wallis to the other. I also found it difficult to believe that the second Wallis could be so obsessed with the original Wallis. Disappointing.

What a brilliant movie!! Who'd have thought Madonna had it in her to direct such a spectacular masterpiece!! Well done Madonna - she should make more if they're of this calibre. A brilliant storyline, switching between the 2 lives of a modern day Wallis, obsessed with Wallis Simpson of the past. Abbie Cornish played her role brilliantly, as did Andrea Riseborough as the 1930's Wallis Simpson. The story was very cleverly told, highlighting the parallels between their lives. A MUST SEE!!!!!!!! I've never given 5 stars before, this is a first for me.

Interesting movie, especially if you like history. A new way of looking at the 1936 Abdication crisis from Wallis Simpson's side.

I'm going to have to go against the tide of opinion thus far to say I thought this was all a bit of a train wreck. It's a film that looks good (in the same way a Vogue fashion spread does) but really has no emotional core. Despite focusing on two women living parallel lives, we never get a real insight into the motivation of either of them and the script offers little opportunity for the viewer to develop any kind of sympathy for their situation. Ultimately, a case of style over substance.

Very well done, by all, actors and director. I've never been a fan of Madonna, but reading the other reviews decided to give the movie a go. Glad I did. Interesting perspective, loved the parallels, and ..... I won't spoil the ending.

A refreshingly different film. I did not realize that Madonna was the director until after I had watched it which was fortunate as I may not have bothered had I known that.I have not been a fan of Madonna of late.However I really enjoyed this movie and found it informative as well.as I have always been interested in the WE story but there have never been any real facts about that were not from the Royal perspective. This story paints an entirely different picture and the past/present perspective.was cleverly done.Great song at he end. Madonna has my admiration . Reminds me of the "early days" Madonna.

What an unexpected surprise. This movie is best thing I have seen for years. The seamless way Wallis and her modern counterpart meet contains clever insights into life. The flip backwards and forwards between the two time eras is superb. The musical score that develops and then becomes utterly significant is incredibly brilliant. Madonna is a genius for making this masterpiece.

Overall a really good movie.Wonderful direction and writing from Madonna.She still has that great sweet voice on the credits closing track. The lead actors were A grade.

Enjoyable movie, a little hard to follow in places but very interesting point of view.

Very well done. Good acting and an interesting twist on a piece of history

I watched this movie without knowing a great deal about it and was pleasantly surprised. A beautiful intertwining of romance and nostalgia and Abbie Cornish was great in the lead role.

Really enjoyed this movie. Cleverly woven between the past and present and interspersed with actual interaction between Wallis Simpson and the modern day Wallis. I was impressed by what Madonna has created here. The memorabilia from the day is used with charm, nostalgia and sentiment. Great acting from Abby Cornish and the brilliant Andrea Riseborough was a perfect choice for Mrs Simpson.

Really enjoyed this, surprised myself, i got totally absorbed in the two stories.

The modern story is a lot more interesting than the boring re-telling of the old Wallis Simpson story, in which most of the scenes appeared not to have any point. In contrast, an early violent scene in the movie was never explained nor re-visited at all. The modern Wally story with Aussie Abbie Cornish in a fine performance is more engaging, particularly Wally's increasingly obsessive behaviour. The surreal aspects of the two women could have been rather silly, but these scenes were well handled.

I really liked this. The period scenes were ravishing and rich. Loved Andrea Riseborough - what a fabulous performer she is. I would have been happy with just the period story - there was so much to tell in that and so much more that could have been told. The modern day scenes were well shot, but I found Abby Cornish unemotional. Her character frustrated me - I needed to know more about why she was fixated on W.E.

Ok - so I only put this in my queue for Madonna and Abby Cornish (who is a brilliant actor). Hmm - interesting movie at almost 2hrs long. This movie contrasts between past-historical events and present day (where Cornish comes in). Great attention to detail from costumery, sets to the biting script. Worthy of a watch. I think people get lost in the initial constant switching between past events and present day. The persistence pays off.
