What if mankind had to leave Earth and somebody forgot to turn the last robot off? After hundreds of lonely years of doing what he was built for - cleaning up the planet - WALL-E (short for Waste Allocation Load Lifter Earth-Class) discovers a new purpose in life (besides collecting knick-knacks) when he encounters a sleek search robot named EVE. WALL-E and EVE travel across the galaxy and set into motion one of the most exciting and imaginative comedy adventures ever brought to the big screen.

WALL-E has not met a single human being in his 700 years of existence. He has spent his days tottering around an abandoned planet Earth, cleaning up the skyscraper-tall piles of garbage left behind. Humanity, whose consumption grew to a level that could not be sustained on the once green planet, threw up their hands and shouted 'we give up!' They embarked on a five-year space voyage, during which time robots were left behind to clean up. It seems five years was a little too optimistic. The latest entry in the Pixar stable is a modern classic - both an animated thrill ride, and a chilling tale of lost humanity. It takes the regular Pixar formula (although to call it a formula is an insult to their ingenuity), and amps it up beyond our wildest expectations. Let's face it: each of their film...

Let's face it: each of their films have grossed around half a billion dollars. They didn't need to challenge themselves. Thank God they did.

WALL-E is the single most adorable character that's probably ever been on film ('voiced' amazingly by legendary sound engineer Ben Burtt). He's just a simple, trash-compacting little robot whose one directive is to clean up the garbage on Earth. But even a robot can tell that not everything is garbage. Some of this stuff meant something to someone, even if it was a long time ago. So he goes about collecting treasures like lighters, Christmas decorations and even cutlery. His prized possession is an old copy of Hello Dolly, which he watches repeatedly; particularly entranced by the action of humans holding hands. Of course, he's all alone. He can only hold his own.

His solitary existence is finally interrupted by a sleek, iPod-looking robot named EVE. Sent to Earth to find out if it can sustain life, she has little time for the swooning WALL-E's romantic gestures. However, even she finds it hard to resist his awkward charm, and he's soon showing her his booty (relax, I'm talking about his treasures. Geez, grow up.) Amongst them is a solitary plant, proof that Earth may be ready to welcome back humans. But are humans the same after 700 years in space?

The first half of WALL-E is some of the most amazing cinema I've ever seen. The opening shots of the desolate Earth are heart-stopping, and heart-breaking. This is not the kind of abandoned-Earth you would imagine in a kid's film. WALL-E shows a more terrifying Earth than I Am Legend and Beyond Thunderdome combined. Famed cinematographer Roger Deakins (No Country for Old Men, The Assassination of Jesse James) was an advisor here, and you can tell.

Director Andrew Stanton really shows his chops in the second half of the film, when WALL-E and EVE head to The Axiom - the spaceship that is now home to humanity. People have de-volved into fatally obese automatons. Everyone has their own floating couch, which provides them with food, drink, and I can only assume, umm, love. This is the result of the merger of corporations and government. The CEO of Buy N Large (read: Wal-Mart) has become a President of sorts, and humanity's existence is the result of every need and want being met to the nth degree. It's a particularly chilling vision of the future, mainly because it's not so crazy. On a time line of 700 years? Yeah, in fact, that seems like a pretty realistic hypothesis.

I only hope people enjoy WALL-E as much as I did. It's the most intelligent film I've seen all year, and one of the greatest sci-fi films ever made. Most impressive is the portrayal of the humans - they aren't stupid, just happy their most base needs are being met. What's most confronting about this film (yes, WALL-E is confronting), is that it is ourselves who are to blame for this futuristic hellscape. There is no big villain responsible for all this horror - it was us. Thankfully, the film doesn't patronise us like certain other environmentally-concerned animations (cough Happy Feet cough). It's not a condemnation of mankind - it's a reminder of everything worth holding onto.

I'm not going to lie here, I found myself tearing up on more than one occasion during the film. Even later the same evening, when writing notes about it, I felt the same tears begin to well up again. There are images and moments in this film I will never forget, and some I wish I could carry around with me all the time, just like WALL-E and his Hello, Dolly recordings. To call this the best film of the year is a pretty big deal. To call it the best Pixar movie is even bigger. But really, that isn't even an accurate scale to grade this film. It's bigger than all of that. This is a work of art that is both about the importance of humanity, and PROOF of the importance of humanity.

Before I finish up, I've got to address a major pet peeve of my own: robots with feelings. It was my one apprehension before heading to see WALL-E. However, the idea of a robot developing a personality based on the 'garbage' of humanity is so beautiful. WALL-E represents what is most important about Earth - and exactly what was left behind. Hard-work, creativity, friendship, romance. In the end, amongst all the drama, and action, and adventure on the way to bringing people back to Earth - WALL-E is the only one who appreciates the simple pleasures. He just wants to hold EVE's hand.

5/5

fantastic visually, it was an enjoyable story and the characters were corny as expected for a blockbuster. interesting point of view and has many intentions for people to ponder. good movie with a fantastic effort for the total project and the genius technology involved.

Excellent script and execution. Brilliance of non vocal characters, and use of music and tonality to convey the emotions and personality of each ROBOT!! (highlight to robot..where emotion and personality is hard to achieve by it self!!)

I just couldn't get into this at all. I was watching the clock the whole time. I should have turned it off but kept hoping something would happen to engage me. Yes it has some important messages about consumption, corporate greed, apathy and friendship but an extremely predictable plotline. Give me Toy Story any day.

A very well done animation. The theme is very different to other animations as there is no human voices until well into the movie. But certainly makes the point strongly of what the planet may be like without humans or of our innability as a race to adress our polution and garbage disposal issues. A very light hearted movie that deals with sensitive issues as mentioned above

This movie was a joy. I adored the control of the lonely opening act, and everything that came after it was icing. I loved the 1940’s ‘Ink Spots’ number playing over a post-apocalyptic wasteland.

The kids loved it but had trouble understanding the plot. Its quite an odd movie, in that there is almost no dialogue in the first half, so you have to watch and see what is going on. The subtestual messages were totally lost on the kids. It was fun for them to watch though and they enjoyed seeing one robot chase another which is all the plot they needed.

Loved the movie.. seen twice and will have a look again. Not only a 'kids movie' , but this movie should also prick our consciousness as regards our polluting, do little and eat lots society... Who wants to learn to walk again and grow vegies! Who want to see the world as Wall-E sees it in allits polluting ugliness! Well, lets hope that this movie never becomes a fullfileed prophecy!

I put off watching this movie for a long time because I'm not into kids movies and I didn't buy into all the hype. However, it deserves the hype. A beautifully portrayed and poignant movie that warms the heart. There's no annoying 'sidekick' type thing you usually have to deal with in an animated movie (a huge plus for me). I personally believe this movie belongs in the instant classics, more in line with Fantasia than Nemo.

Quite simply a beautiful movie. The animiation is superb - in fact it's probably the first Pixar movie I have watched where I have forgotten I am watching a "cartoon". The story is simple but effective with a strong message but without being patronising. Wall-E is a terrific character, so much heart for a robot. The supporting characters, mainly robots, ensure plenty of laughs, and a few moments of sadness. Do not miss this one.

WALL-E is truly a touch of Pixar genius. Brilliant CGI bursts out of the screen giving each of the loveable robots a dose of optimistic humanism by and large more "human" than human. But it is the titile character, a little bot with a penchant for musicals, a facsination for the sublime and a lovable, friendly guilelessly naive determination who can teach us all a thing or two... A gentle nod and homage to the sci-fi classic "Silent Running", this film is indeed one for the whole family. If this kind of story can't snap us out of complacency, we might just need a WALL-E around as perpetual gentle reminder. Good thing he's solar powered... he shines as bright as his life source. Do see it.

PIXAR studios can do no wrong and their latest offering is no exception. Wall-E is unquestionably a masterpiece of animation. It may also be a great science fiction movie. It is certainly a great children's movie and one that most adults will also enjoy. PIXAR's achievement here is to tell a story of quite complex ideas with almost no dialogue in an enjoyable and highly entertaining way. There is no question that it demands more of the viewer than the average animation, but a little thought and concentration will be richly rewarded. The miracle is that PIXAR has created two characters, Wall-E and Eva, that despite having no recognisably human features, are not only able to convey a huge range of emotions, but in fact have a terrific romantic chemistry. This is frankly astonishing. The set pieces are magnificent. The scenes on the devastated, garbage strewn Earth have a fascinating beauty and the space ship is a wondrous sight of bright, gleaming technology. I could go on praising this movie, but I think my eight year old son said it best: "It was funny, sad and very cool". Indeed.
