LOW LEVEL VIOLENCE

Director: Alfred Hitchcock
Actors: James Stewart, Barbara Bel Geddes, Henry Jones, Kim Novak, Tom Helmore

Considered by many to be director Alfred Hitchcock's greatest achievement comes this fully restored and remastered version of the haunting film classic. This special release also contains a restoration trailer and revealing documentary footage. Set in San Francisco, James Stewart portrays an acrophobic detective hired to trail a friend's suicidal wife (Novak). After he successfully rescues her from a leap into the bay, he finds himself becoming obsessed with the beautifully troubled woman. One of cinema's most chillingly romantic endeavors, it's a fascinating myriad of haunting camera angles shot among some of San Francisco's reknowned landmarks. This film is a must for collectors; Leonard Maltin gives Vertigo four stars and hails it as "A genuinely great motion picture that demands multiple viewings."

Rather dated now but very good in its day. Story intriguing, performances OK but a bit overacted - probably indicative of 50s style of acting.

Very slow - I fast forwarded much of it. James Stewart was good however maybe time has dulled Hitchcock's importance...found this overrated. Was expecting much more. For fans only.

A bit dissappointed with this movie. Didn't quite have the usual Hitchcock suspense. Character played by James Steward not quite right.

An absolute classic. From a historical point of view it is important that this movie has been restored and in our view the restoration has been very well done. Great performances by the cast, however it is the film direction that is the standout and Alfred Hitchcock proves once again that he is a Master.

Brilliantly directed movie. The ambivalence in the longing for love is extremely well acted and directed, hightened by the music. Cassablanca-ish in that respect. Initially a little wierd until the twist makes sense of things.

One of Hitchcock's best films. It's not a suspensful thriller as such. It can be said that it is a sombre dark story that moves a little slowly in parts but that just heightens the expectation and enjoyment of this marvellous movie. Expect the unexpected.

Was watchable and in its correct time frame would have been acceptable, all is revealed eventually but for much of the time was very confusing. How did he survive that 1st scene hanging from his fingertips? only Alfred will ever know.

Classic Hitchcock. Had us glued to our seats absorbed in the mystery. Cinematography and direction still brilliantly fresh after all these years. Found out from the Bonus material that the composer of the soundtrack also did Citizen Kane's - no wonder it was so good!
