Enjoyable movie, well acted and interesting characters. Would recommend it
I watched it to the end, waste of time. The movie was kind of shallow, uninteresting and incomplete.
This is one of my personal favourites - an original storyline, a cautionary tale, a thoughtful look at big business and relationships in this fast-paced 21st century. George Clooney is fantastic in this role - although at first you see just his customary charm and cockiness, by the end of the movie he allows his character to show a really appealing vulnerability. Vera Farmiga is lovely and believable as his love interest. Anna Kendrick's role adds some fun and spark to the story.
Cloony performance was ok but expected the film to be better
Sorry to say would have been a alright movie if there wasn't scratches on the Disc
So sorry can't really give it a Review as it skipped most of the movie :(
Nice to see a romcom with a noir twist. We enjoyed this, with a few definite chortles. Some people live a very weird existence.
An enjoyable and quite charming dramedy if you can stand the somewhat smarmy George Clooney, who will win you over by movie's end - trust me.
Quirky little film, really enjoyed the original story line
With a job that has him traveling around the country firing people, Ryan Bingham leads an empty life out of a suitcase, until his company does the unexpected: ground him. Great watch
Not a George Clooney fan but I found the story to be quite interesting and he is very charming and genuine. The story reflects well about the trend of relationship in recent years: lack of commitment and over-rated sexual relationship. As some movie reviewers said, a surprising ending.
liked the movie quite enjoyable
Clooney is always good as is the theme.
Enjoyed its bitter sweetness.....recommended it to others already
Disappointing is how I would rate 'Up in the Air'. George Clooney is better than this slow moving film about a large company that employs high powered individuals to travel the USA and 'fire' people! I watched it all, but was quite bored.
Loved it...a great escape movie
Up In The Air is an original movie built around a character who spends all of his time on the road firing people. His personal life at home is zero. At first we despise his function, but by the end we are pitying him because he has nothing else. When he meets his soulmate she turns out to be just like him in the way that he doesn't want. If you are planning to watch this movie you'd better like George Clooney - he's in every scene. The dialogue is smart, witty, and rapid-fire, and there's never a slow moment. Some of the scenes with people being fired are cringingly hilarious. This movie makes some comments on the dominance of corporations over the individual. it is hard to categorise but worth seeing.
An awesome story about an inspirational character.
I was quite disappointed by this movie, I found the storyline & characters to be very superficial, one-dimensional, shallow and generally unlikeable. Still can't see what all the fuss is about George Clooney, sure he's handsome, but as an actor he does nothing for me.
It was a bit boring, and very long, not what I thought the movie was about
Nothing to really rave about
Why was there so much hype about this movie??? I found it pretty dull fare. For Clooney fans, I suggest the movie might be improved by turning off the sound & watching George in slow motion (actually, scrap the latter suggestion, the story moved in slow motion anyway).
We gave it about half an hour before giving up.
Really good movie. Recommend it.
I enjoyed the movie alot. Kind of spoke to me alot about the society we live in. But at the same time. It had moments of coldness. But I think that was the point.
Quite an engaging story with some little twists.
I thought this was going to predictable and "fluffy", but it surprised me. Overall it was a good movie, giving lots to think about. It was however, a little long and I did wonder where is was going .... I kinda wish for the predicatable ending. I wouldn't call it a comedy by any means and wouldn't watch it again, but was a good way to chill out for a couple of hours.
Not my fav. too fluffy, stupid sit com type movie.
Having said that, it will be a hit because of the eye candy.
This movie does comment on certain people's life choices
Really boring. Couldn't watch all of it.
very disappointing for a george clooney movie. no comedy just dull and depressing.
Nice movie. Nothing too heavy and actually makes you think about the whole husband, wife, 2 kids and white picket fence that majority seem to need...do they really?
This is a gut wrenching tale which my husband had to do at one stage and humanity is essential when terminating someones livelyhood. The young lass entering the movie with, just out of uni high ideas soon realized that it takes a lot more than she had convinced the heirachy to take on(her idea of streamlining-saving money). The movie left a big impression with me.....
Good grief! The scene when his co-worker questioned them about relationships sucked, was too lengthy and added nothing to the story. Top spot when he visited her home – I didn’t see that coming.
Who thinks of this stuff? Pretty boooooring - bit cutesy for me
Surprisingly depressing for a so-called comedy. Anna Kendrick surprised me with the fact that she can actually act, an ability irrelevant to the Twilight series in which I first saw her (as Bella's annoying jealous 'friend'). Ending has emotional impact. Worth a look.
Rather disjointed - maybe because I dozed off during the movie !!
Normally I like George Clooney but this movie was so slow and so boring, i stopped watching after half hour into movie, not worth rating I thought
You know I have read the other reviews and if I want a really highly directed and meaningful passionatly acted and well scripted and directed movie I look to the foreign section.
If I want a light hearted Sundy afternoon sit back and forget about the world and chill out movie without having to think and be reasonably well entertained then this is the ideal movie and whilst typical of it's genre has a good story line and an ending that really took me and my family by surprise...not a fairytale ending but poignant..
Anyway make up your own mind but worth a look!
Found movie a little slow
had a good laugh would recommend this movie
very good movie definately shows how we get caught up in our work lifes
This film is surprisingly more substantial than it looks at first glance. It kind of looks like Hollywood smush but I like the way it is kind of unresolved. George is magnificent as always!
What a breath of fresh air this movie was. A concept of life that these high flyers have, is what most of us mere mortals do not even contemplate in our day to day lives. I loved the movie and George was perfect for the part.
George Clooney hasn,t changed he is still a good actor a very strange movie
super seriously bad movie!
Sort of went nowhere but George Clooney makes up for it
Clooney was somewhat challenged in this role, but he rose to it and carried it off well. What threatened to become a cheezy "happy ending" milk and cookies movie turned out to be more profound and thought provoking. Worth sticking with to the end.
Very good story about work and life and how our perspective of it change over the years as we get older.
Excellent movie, especially for those in Management and/or HR!
Don't bother, there was no reason for this movie other than to waste my time.
Loved this movie. Must've been watching a different one to some of the negative reviewers. Clooney just perfect in this role. Older female lead had great role although the twisted knife was tough. Great female role reversal I guess! As a middle aged bloke I empathised with Clooney's character but certainly couldn't tackle his job. The younger female lead was a bit stereotyped but I enjoyed the generation gap. Great script. Sad and even gut wrenching in parts, but some good laughs also. Thoroughly recommended
I enjoyed watching this movie as it kept me thinking. Great messages.
Great clooney movie, not exciting by funny in parts.
This isn't really very serious despite the supposed subject matter - ie fullscale sackings during the GFC. good fun
this was a good movie kept us intrested
I thought this was more of a comedy, however was disappointed. George Clooney's character had some good morale points to consider.
loved it!!! entertained all emotions
Great film with likeable characters
the most boring movie ever!
A corporate hatchet man almost comes down to earth after his high flying lifestyle is threatened. A movie that tries to be profound but in the end is quite superficial. The young female go getter who poses a threat to Clooney is unconvincing and the outcome of his fling with the business woman is predictable.
Second time I have seen this movie and loved it both times. I think the performances and script are fantastic, really interesting dialogue. I found it thought provoking, challenging and entertaining. Really surprised by lots of the member reviews, highly recommend.
This is not one of George Clooney's best films. The film lacks substance, perhaps because there are too many themes in it. There's the one-dimensional George character, who is literally up in the air as his work takes him on the road for most of the year. Then there's his line of work, which involves sacking people but which he does without too much reflection. The characters are shallow and small-minded, which makes it difficult to like any of them, in particular, the Anna Kendricks character, whose whiny voice drove me to distraction.
A nice pleasant way to spend a couple of hours. It will entertain but wont set the world alight!
George...no wonder why he's out of the headings, playing such roles: boring, no punch, nothing. The only reason I gave a three star is because of a real life story line.
The dialogue is clever and stylish, while the fired employees break your heart. However, Clooney's character really doesn't inspire the sympathy that it should. I approve of his philosophy of detachment and little responsibility but it was hard to empathise with this character.
I wish George Clooney had stayed up in the air or jumped without a parachute !!! shallow and vacuous.
truly boring, what a waste of time. Even the delightful George Clooney couldn't make this interesting. There is no character development and the plot is totally predictable. What a yawn
Different role for our Mr Clooney, but he does it well and with style. Story line is good with a bit of a reality check at the end!
I wasn't sure about this movie at first but after the first 15 mins I was able to slow my thinking down to it's pace and take notice of the subtle details and feel for the characters. It's a story that will stay in your mind long after seeing it. I like that sort of story.
Good movie......a learning curve for George's character. Not brilliant, but enjoyable.
Let's face it.......who couldn't watch George watch paint dry!!
Nice pretence, but it just didn't work for me.
Fantastic. loved this movie..
Love this movie. Saw it on the big screen and it doesn't lose out on the small one. Surprisingly interesting. Who would have thought the topic of sacking people could make one actually sympathetic to the main character. George Clooney is great in this.
Not one of Clooney's finest. he did look old and tired hmm, maybe meant to look like that for the part.
Slow , not an uplifting movie .
Not one to tell your friends about.
Too much Oscar hype. Nothing much happens, besides the viewer's emotional reaction to the retrenchments caused by the global financial crisis.
OK movie. Not much happens
To me, it's a case of yet another book made into a movie that really didnt have that much of a story to tell in the first place, yet it starts a major star, who I presume was chosen to get "bums on seats" in the cinema.
Yes, George Clooney is fine in it, but I expect more from him - he is A grade actor after all. He didn't really add to the movie as much as I think his fans would expect, and the ladies in the movie shone more than he. Perhaps that was his intention, unfortunately I chose the movie because HE was in it! So to me its a 2.5 plus as far as the story goes, it really only one message which you will find out at the end of the movie, and thats the best part. The rest was rather too drawn out .... I also think there was an opportunity to show "a bit of skin" in the love scenes and that was not exploited enough.
Possibly one of the worst ways to waste almost two hours of your life.
Watching the trailer for this film makes you think; "What a great concept, George Clooney as a cold toned hatchet man for big companies!". It then starts to dawn on you, that although it is a good concept, there is only so much the creators could do with it. This is exactly why this film fell at the first hurdle. The start is relitivley entertaining with Mr Clooney making a variety of people unemployed and seeing their reactions. Following this a new kid on the block tries to steal his thunder by introducing the idea of internet firing. The rest of the film is her following him around the US learning how to fire people properly and GC falling for a married woman and attending his sisters wedding. Most of which is done at a snails pace. In my opinion this is a hard film to watch because you have to make an effort to pay attention to what is going on rather than the film drawing you in. Without doubt, one of the most dissappointing films I've seen in years.
Not Clooney's best film and probably a bit too close to home for me as a frequent traveller. Needed to watch something else afterwards to lift my mood!
Wonderful performance by all the cast. A little disappointed with the ending
An enjoyable film, a look into a lone man and his journey of learning empathy, showing emotion and dealing with the consequences.
I do enjoy Clooney, he can portray a likeable character and he does well in all the aspects of this film - being the a-hole and being the man with his feelings on the line and letting romance in his life.
Not a bad movie at all
I enjoyed this movie a lot but it was on the slow side and not for everyone.
I love this movie!! It's something different with an unexpected plot and its witty and a dark comedy. Really enjoyed it from start to finish.
boring. voice of female annoying.
A movie really that didn't reach any great heights and when it finished it was a let down. George Clooney looked tired and jaded and is much better in comedys. it wasn't what I expected and I would not recomend it.
Quirky little movie. George Clooney was special as usual.
Very inspiring with a George Clooney as his best surrounded by a great cast. A nice storyline, for a great film that will make you think between two smiles.
3 + Unusual American contemporary style of movie. The movie is an interesting study of human behaviour; their change of ideals, coping with loneliness, workplace hardships and finding/finishing relationships. Plenty of fast talk, fast lane dialogue, that takes awhile to get to the point. Clooney is excellent as usual, I don???t know Vera Farmiga but quality acting by her, hot chemistry between them. George is a high flyer whose job it is to sack people on behalf of a business, he has an affair with a fellow high flyer, coupled with the company of a new age 23 years old female that is changing his work place format. Bit of a twist, at the end. A reasonable nights entertainment.
Funny thing is ... I live in a suitcase on planes ... watched this first returning from Europe after 3 weeks on the road. It's quite wrong with how everything works ... a romantic portrayal of life in the bag. Overall a medium good movie ... has particular appeal as it is different from the norm.
I thought some of the supporting actors were brilliant .... and YES Mr Clooney is great too.
Worth watching.
This movie doesn't have action, but have style, charm, professional. A very realistic and believable plot and excellent acting, it's George after all.
not bad. didn't quite expect the ending.
A bit ordinary - not the best effort from any of the cast.
Up in the Air and all over the place. This movie leaved a lot to be desired. Average.
Another of George's more subtle roles. Not a lot happens - my boyfriend was bored senseless by it. Only for those who are rather partial to George's charm. Anna K is pretty good - not sure if her performance was Oscar-nomination worthy though.
excellent movie liked it from the start to the end...
George Clooney is fantastic in a more serious role - with fantastic supporting cast. Interesting concept and executed really well. Nice mix of funny moments and more touching ones.
George Clooney's portrayal of a single, mature business man, with no ties and a job which soley involves firing people, is as always excellent, he takes on the characters personna well and plays is to perfection.
We found it rather a depressing film and certainly not a comedy apart from the rare lighter side of the people around him. Definately a film that has to be watched and lisrened to, not a family movie.
This was a disappointment for me - very slow, I love George Clooney and he played a great character but it was boring, I'm glad i didn't go to the movies to see it, was an ok way to pass a couple of hours - not a movie to add to my collection though.
The extras on the DVD has deleted scenes the director cut from the movie because "they seemed to be from a different movie". He was right, but he should've cut a lot more. Many parts of the movie don't seem to fit: an uninhibited party on a boat, a wedding. Essentially it's a sad story of genuine people being sacked due to the economic downturn. The hired "firers" should have got some of their own medicine.
Superb! Clooney at his absolute best. This is a movie for grown-ups, and not because it is smutty or crude, but simply because it is a class above so many of the other films we have seen. Great sotry, great acting. I sat through this with a smile on my face.
Cant wait for this to come out on DVD. This is contemporary Hollywood movie making at its best (then again the standard has never been that high). Excellent performances by George Clooney et al. We should have more of this stuff, with subtle and clever social commentary rather than 3D junk.
