I have just met you and I love you

It’s never easy to admit when a movie has brought you to tears. Some people relish the opportunity for a good sob in the cinema. Others, like myself, less so. However, Pixar’s latest film Up only took 10 minutes to turn me into a weeping sack of mush. Directors Pete Docter (Monsters, Inc.) and Bob Petersen have delivered yet another touching, romantic and emotionally devastating masterpiece. Oh, and it’s also the best kids film of the year.

Having moved on from connoisseur rats and lovelorn robots, the strongest brand name in the business has tried their hand at genuine human drama. And they succeed. Big time. Up gives us the heartbreaking story of an elderly widower named Carl Frederickson who goes to fantastical lengths to fulfill a promise to his late wife. He ties tens of thousands of balloons to the roof of his home and literally uproots his abode, steering it all the way to South America. A clever plan, right? Well, I just hope that ingenuity returns when he needs to go to the bathroom and realises that the plumbing is kaput.

Our septuagenarian sad sack is voiced by the legendary Ed Asner, surely the unlikeliest movie star of 2009. He’s grumpy all right, but there is a grandfatherly quality that makes him ultra-lovable. He is also a more engaging action hero than the entire cast of GI Joe combined. He is joined on this adventure by a precocious boy-scout/stowaway named Russell (Jordan Nagai) who impressively walks the tightrope between adorable and annoying. He’s just like a real kid, which is the biggest compliment I can pay to an animated character.

Of course, there is a villain (voiced by Christopher Plummer), as well as plenty of hilarious antics and gripping action sequences, all rendered in glorious computer animation. The way Up dazzles the eye is one thing; the way it touches the heart is another. The relationship between Carl and Russell is truly touching, but the real anchor is Carl’s relationship with his late wife Ellie. Although we only get to know her in a short montage at the beginning of the film (the one that left me an emotional mess), her presence illuminates the entire picture. If you can make it through the picture without shedding a tear, I would have your ducts checked.

The image that will forever be associated with Up is that flying house. There is something so poetic about that image, perhaps more so than any other frame of animation that has been drawn by the talented folks at Pixar. It is a wonderfully ingenious concept and presents a universal desire that surely everyone shares: “What if I could just fly away?” It’s as fantastical as an elephant flapping his ears to achieve flight and I believe it will become just as iconic. Has there ever been a bolder moment in a children’s film than one in which the lead character essentially sets off on his final journey into the heavens; the journey of a man at the end of his time on Earth with the ultimate purpose of reuniting with the late love of his life. The poetry and melancholic beauty of this decision is overwhelming. It’s not necessarily bleak or ominous; in fact it’s kind of peaceful. While the emotional drama of Up cuts deepest, there is still this vibrant element of adventure and madness that makes the film so enjoyable. It is also the most kid-friendly of the recent Pixar films. While I adored the dystopian drama of WALL-E and the French farce of Ratatouille, there is just something so FUN about Up.

Carl and Russell’s adventure in South America is full of surprises that I don’t dare spoil here. I will reveal that they are joined on their journey by a goofy dog called Dug, whose collar impressively gives voice to his thoughts. He introduces himself by saying “I have just met you, and I love you!” Funny. From the first frame of this beautiful picture, I was thinking the exact same thing.

5/5

I saw this one on the big screen when it came out and loved it. Watched it again on DVD and loved it second time around. The characters are very real and I found myself really relating to Carl and Ellie. This must have been the first kids movie that made me cry - and then laugh out loud the next minute. 4/5 only because it is probably not suited to younger children, but I think once my kids are a bit older they will appreciate it too.

Very clever movie, about life's journey the the twists and turns that our choices shape, which sounds very philosophical for a kids movie. The story moves well and has some very funny lines. Loved the extra features on the disc there are 2 mini movies. Loved that there was very little violence and that there is much that would scare the most sensitive child (unless they had a thing about dogs).

I'm a big fan of Pixars Animated Features, so this was a must see for me. Their previous titles like Wall-E and Cars have been alot of great fun and some brililant humour that can be accepted by all ages. The great thing about Pixar features is the adult humour that accompanies the simple kiddy ideas and stories making them great movies for all ages.
Up bucked this trend a little, it still had some great moments, the dog is quite hilarious! But on top of it it had a very good quatliy feel to it, it wasn't just a silly family movie that the whole family can enjoy it had quite a bit of emotion to it as well, the first 20 minutes are excellently done and gets you invested more then some real movies do!

Its not the funniest of the Pixar flicks but still a great quality picture that is great for some light fun.

7/10

Another win from Pixar. This is better than they've had recently, having been a little disappointed with Wall-E. This was a heartwarning little movie, nothing gut-wrenching (except for that sad little montage with his wife at the start). I didn't think I could sympathise with a cranky old man, but I really felt for him. Fun and involving, and that's just my opinion. My daughter loved the dogs, lol

This movie didn't quite live up to my expectations, although I suspect that's more because it's received such outstanding reviews rather than because it wasn't very good. For some reason, dispite the obvious need to suspend disbelief when watching this film-- the man flies to South America in a house, so you don't expect realism!-- there were times when I just felt that the story line was weak and, well, unrealistic. It was quite a good and uplifting film, as good as most Pixar films but not better than, say, Finding Nemo, Monster's Inc. or either of the Toy Stories. I will give it extra kudos for its very sympathetic representation of non-'typical' families.

This was not entirely my cup of tea. It's a great movie, but I spent much of it thinking the animation itself and the storyline was just a bit off. I'm more of a Finding Nemo / Monsters Inc / animation fan, so this "human" tale didn't set my adrenaline pumping. It's kind of funny in parts - "Dug"the dog is fantastic, and so is Kevin. The humans let this story down. It's very emotional though, so be prepared to have your heartstrings tugged.

Having been a longtime fan of computer animated films and seen the evolution of Pixar's quality, Up was perhaps the pinnacle film to put into perspective just how far we have come with technology in animation. The detail wasn't simply technically brilliant, but the effort put into forming such scenery and location draws you in with a skill I have only ever seen achieved by anime legend Hiyao Miyazaki. Not only was this a triumphant success on the visual team's part, but the story itself was of such high quality. Whether you enjoy the visual aspects or the story aspects of films such as these, this has undoubtedly set a new standard.

Glorious- loved the bird. I thought Mr Frederickson looked like Spencer Tracey- wonder if this was intentional?

What can you say about brilliance? another fantastic disney pixar movie with great charactors and storyline. The 'dog' stole the movie!! the type of movie any age can enjoy and watch again and again.

Loved it! A bit more adult than other animated movies, more emotional. I thought it was fantastic!

This is a fun movie. Not just for kids, but for adults as well. I could relate easily to the old man, who just wanted to be left alone. Look out for the star wars references.

This is by far the best animated movie I have ever seen. Many animated movies go for the laughs and not much else. There was so much emotion in this one. I almost cried in some parts and I'm not a big movie crier. Then there were parts where I was laughing so hard I almost cried again. They also did a fantastic job with the feeling of flying, I'm not afraid of heights but several times felt like I was actually falling. The story was also warm and full of good messages for the kids. Awesome movie.
