Unknown is a very silly movie, but it pulls off a genuinely surprising twist in its third act, and for that I must tip my hat to it. Liam Neeson stars as Dr. Martin Harris, a botanist attending a seminar in Berlin with his wife Liz (January Jones). After dropping his wife off at their hotel, Martin’s free-wheeling taxi driver (Diane Kruger) accidentally plunges their transport into a river. The good doctor suffers a nasty blow to the head, winds up in a coma, and wakes up four days later only to discover that another man (Aidan Quinn) has stolen his identity. Martin implores the authorities to arrest his phony double, but, seeing as he can’t produce any ID, they dismiss him as a kook. In this day and age, you’ll need to temporarily assume he doesn’t have a Facebook profile page that he could show off, complete with pictures and pokes from Liz. Not that it would matter. Liz – weirdly - plays along with the imposter, denying that she’s ever even met Neeson’s Martin. She looks at him not with the expression of a loving wife, but with the detached blankness of an amnesiac cat. January Jones is either very good in this film, or very, very bad.

I take no pleasure in admitting that I was bested by a movie whose entire plot hinges on an amnesia-instigating bump on the noggin (perhaps inspired by the not-so-legendary Batman villain King Tut?), but all the guesses I made regarding the film’s central mystery were proven incorrect. Maybe I could blame it on the film’s aforementioned silliness, which had fooled me into thinking even the most ludicrous explanation could be possible. Don’t be mistaken – the twist is ludicrous – but it certainly isn’t the nutty Vertigo/The Prestige mash-up of a finale I had concocted in my demented little brain box. Although that would have been incredible.

But can a decent twist save a middling movie? Not quite. Neeson – perhaps suffering from an existential acting crisis following the box office success of Taken – has pared back his once considerable charm to an almost negative state. He is all gruff Batman voice, and no charisma. January Jones, who is so good as the slowly disintegrating house-wife on Mad Men, can’t even bring herself to provide an inflection to her speech here. The rest of the cast, including Kruger and Frank Langella as a mysterious ex-colleague of Martin’s, are passable, but something has clearly gone wrong when the only person having fun with their role is Bruno Ganz (a.k.a. Hitler from Downfall), as a former-Stasi-turned-private-investigator.

Jaume Collet-Serra directs this adaptation of Didier van Cauwelaert’s novel Out Of My Head as well as he can, or rather, as well as he needs to. He ably handles the few action scenes, and the movie chugs along without stalling too often. His previous thriller Orphan was better; it had a weird, kinky chutzpah to it. That being said, I’m relieved he decided not to take a similar approach here (the shower scene between the 58-year-old Neeson and 33-year-old Jones was much more than I needed in that respect, thank you very much).

2.5/5

Harrison Ford's "Frantic" meets "Bourne Identity" with a hint of "Salmon Fishing In the Yemen"! A good modern action thriller with the usual Hollywood car chases & unrealistic stunts, but the characters are believable & well acted. As far as the genre goes, it's not bad at all.

The beginning makes you wonder what's going on , but hollywood eventually takes over with the endless fist fights where no one seems to get ruffled - well not the hero at least - and then on to the mandatory endless car chase....ho hum

Liam is brilliant as always but most of the money went into a pointless and expensive car chase leaving very little money for script writers. Nothing makes sense until towards the end by which time the audience has lost patience.

Good & enjoyable thriller with a nice twist and some Berlin history interwoven in....Saying that, the fact that it was based in this city was a nice change from the old and boring New York, LA or even Paris.

A movie in which I thought I could predict what was going to happen, but was I surpised! A real twist at the end and as usual well acted with Liam Neeson supported by Diane Kruger, January Jones, Aidan Quinn and Frank Langella (the latter vastly under-rated in my opinion). Well worth seeing if you like surpises and more than a bit of action.

Liam makes a surprisingly good action star. Interesting twists and turns to the story...a little far fetched in that he simply turned against his fellow baddies without any real explanation, but hey, it's a movie and just meant to be entertaining. Well worth a watch.

Unknown is a pacy and engaging film - up until the script goes haywire with a final twist that stretches credulity. The writers over complicated a situation that could possible occur and negated an intelligent plot with a ridiculous ending. Fortunately it's only the ending that buggers this up. Neeson is good as are most of the cast. it's worth watching but you you will go away feeling a little peeved.

The twist in this was a surprise. Given how predictable most movie plots are these days I didn't see this one coming. The story is far-fetched. I like to think of Neeson as an older Jason Bourne...suspend all disbelief at the plot and just enjoy the ride. The first half of the movie is a little slow...stick with it because it's good once the twist is revealed.

This movie is reminiscent of The Net, in that the main character's identity is stolen through a series of events and leaves him fighting to prove his identity, to stay and escape those who would seek to silence him. There are a couple of twists and turns that keep the viewer guessing in parts, but ultimately it ends in a somewhat predictable manner. It is entertaining however and is in the combined styles of The Net & The Bourne Identity.

The legendary Liam Neeson plays (yet another) great action role of a man who wakes up from a coma with an identity that is no longer his. The movie takes you through the journal of him proving that he is who he says he is. It such a brilliant film, with an amazing cast and an ending you really never see coming.

Really 3 1/2 Stars--I watched the Bourne movies so long ago that I had forgotten the similar plot twist these movies share. Consequently, I was kept guessing and enjoyed the "reveal". A lot of very slow-moving sequences. I loved Bruno Ganz as the ex-Stasi Jurgen. But I just can't get over how bad an actress January Jones is! I saw her in "X Men First Class", and she acts the same way in that movie...EXACTLY the same! I thought Aidan Quinn phoned in his small role as well.

Very strong thriller, with a great performance from Liam Neeson as well as nice work from Diane Kruger. January Jones was less impressive, but the plot and writing is strong enough to lift this film above the pack. The opening of the film reminded me of the Harrison Ford film Frantic, but this one was much more difficult to predict the ending. 3 1/2 stars

As far as movies with twists go, this one packs a killer punch at the end. Liam Neeson delivers an outstanding performance. Watch this movie carefully and attentively though, as you need to put the pieces together.

Wow! Not often a thriller has me guessing right until the end! ! ! The cast do a great job of holding your attention with lots of action, twists and turns, the storyline has a well hiddden ending. . . . . . . never take for granted that the 'goodie' is really a good person and that a 'baddie' can't do the correct thing in the end? ? ? ? I'm looking forward to watching 'Taken' now with Liam Neilson.

Liam as good as ever. You can make a good movie with a sound plot without all the rubbish coming from the month of the actors.

Really enjoyed this thriller and excellent cast, except for January Jones who is perfectly gelid as an actress, thought it was a script requirement in Mad Men but seems as if she doesn't have much acting ability. Liam Neeson keeps getting better and better, story was intriguing.

It was exciting but too much like another movie that I'm surprised they bothered to make it. But I won't spoil it by telling you which movie it resembles because that would spoil the plot.

Agree with Kate below - Bourne did it better. But still a decent mystery with a deceptively dark heart, and if you like Liam Neeson you'll find something to enjoy.
