A lot has changed since Underworld hit cinemas in 2003. Though it was a surprise box office hit, that tale of warring vampire and lycan clans would eventually be overshadowed, quite spectacularly, by a little something called The Twilight Saga. Although two films followed and made a tidy profit (even without star Kate Beckinsale in part three), they’ve hardly been a part of the international consciousness like the Twilight films have, and can barely be credited with the resurgence of vampires in popular culture. Now, it would be completely inaccurate to paint the Underworld flicks as these secretly awesome, gritty films that deserve the same amount of attention as Stephanie Meyer’s sparkly, notably unvampiric creations. In actuality, the first felt a lot like a cheesy Matrix rip-off with half the style and double the runtime. But Underworld: Awakening – the fourth entry in the series, and the first to feature Beckinsale since 2006’s Evolution – is a swift, brutal, and thoroughly competent actioner that doesn’t balk at a bit of bloodletting. Arriving between parts one and two of Twilight’s interminable swan song Breaking Dawn, nothing could be more welcome.

The plot is mercifully simple. Beckinsale’s Selene is a werewolf-hunting vampiress who has angered her elders by falling for vamp/lycan hybrid Michael Corvin (Scott Speedman in the earlier films; replaced unceremoniously by a stand in, and occasionally, a weird uncanny valley trawling CGI-creation here). When humankind cottons on to the fact that these so-called-supernatural creatures have lived secretly beneath the surface for centuries, they take it upon themselves to wipe out the unsavoury types. During this “purge”, Selene and Michael decide to runaway together, but their plan is foiled and Selene is capture by evil scientists (Stephen Rea and a quickly dispatched Wes Bentley). It’s only when she’s freed by a mysterious figure that she can get down to the business of getting down to business: namely, viciously annihilating anyone that crosses her - human, lycan, or vampire - on her quest to rejoin her love.

The performances are flat, and the dialogue uninspiring, but directors Måns Mårlind and Björn Stein can put together an action sequence. The set pieces – and there are a fair number of them – in which Selene goes about decapitating, skewering, and disembowelling her enemies are fairly spectacular. Cinematographer Scott Kevan even brings a hint of beauty to the frame, elevating this beyond your traditional black-and-blue tinged, Evanescence-scored, leather fetish flick (though it most certainly is all of those things).

And perhaps this was the work of an active imagination searching for something beneath the film’s shallow veneer, but were the allusions to Lars von Trier’s Dogville intentional or what? When Selene flees the gunfire of her human attackers, she seeks solace amongst her fellow blood-sucking compatriots. They’re reluctant to offer her shelter, despite the pleas of the chief elder’s (Charles Dance) son (Theo Davis). That being said, the clan is eventually attacked by a bunch of mutated werewolves (chief among them is Coldplay front man Chris Martin lookalike Kris Holden-Ried), so it seems the similarities end there. But this does bring to mind one incredible pitch: Underworld: Rise of the Antichrist, directed by Lars himself. He’ll bring the scissors.

3/5

What the hell?! Can't Kate Beckinsale get any other roles? This movie was more about the special effects than anything else. Transformers had a better plot! Avoid it!

very disappointing. from a fan of underworld series. have seen all the others. this one is least interesting. they just made one more movie to milk more money out of audience. no story. no acting. not much special effects or surprises of any kind.

Great acting, special effects and a great addition to the Underworld series. Let down by some cliche scriptwriting, this is worth a watch, even if its not 5 star material. I still think it was worth the money at the cinema.

The fourth instalment of a franchise so watch the others first. One star for a vampires versus werewolves movie that isn't Twilight. Two stars for Kate Beckinsale.

Once again Kate Beckinsale was stunning in leather and lots of vampires and big monstery werewolves had a mash up. They keep talking about how important the hybrid is but all he ever seems to do is get beaten in fights. He's about as useful as the chef's rescue in the Shining.

Loved this film and thought it was a great continuation from the original trilogy - and all the slow mo stalk-walking in leather that the audience can handle. The film is open for a sequel so I'll be looking forward to that.

The fourth movie of this franchise had a lower budget than the others, (i presume) because the special effects are not on par with the other 3 movies. But if you watched the first 3, you might as well watch this one.

We enjoyed this episode of the franchise as much as the rest. OK as some reviewers said, some parts were not so believable..... Come on!!!! it is about Vampires and Lycans how could you think it was not so believable???? Anyway even fi was terrible, I would watch it just for Kate Beckinsale in her skin tight costume.

Awesome series, keenly awaiting (and hoping) there is more to come. Should not and can not be compared to the drivel known as The Twilight Saga; these are 2 completely different audiences.

Awful. I didn't mind the first couple, but this one didn't come close to meeting expectations. A waste of time. My wife and I found ourselves laughing at stages...and it's not meant to be funny.

Let me say from the outset that didn't like the previous Underworld films, and I only got this one out to see if the franchise had improved in any way. I actually preferred this movie to the others, but not by much. I thought the action was better, but still a little to graphically violent for me. I prefer the Resident Evil franchise. I give this 3 stars because at least I didn't fall asleep during this movie.

Very good, but I enjoyed the last film better. Great action but some of the chase seens with the lycans seem a bit gritty & not so believable as they don't look there. Worth watching though, very good otherwise.

3 minutes of plot and then all action and special FX. A huge waste of Kate Beckinsole's talent and my viewing time. Very disappointing.

No no no no no no no no no. Completely incongruent with the initial films, and lacks any of the original sensuality or lustre that made the first few films so thrilling to look at. Selene's behaviour is completely inconsistent with with her previous behaviour and methods. The plot is different, none of the original characters are in place, it's completely different stylistically and in terms of structure. The lack of Scott Speedman as Michael, and some lookalike instead just feels wrong. The only thing that works in this movie is Kate Beckinsale, who will no doubt help ensure the series survives however anyone who was an avid fan will have to accept the Underworld series has not so much evolved as completely changed into something else. Why Wes Bentley was taken out so early, as probably the most credible actor in the whole thing, baffles me. I've seen a lot of comparisons to the Resident Evil franchise and I have to agree- it's like the Underworld Franchise has descended to the weird CGI and effects of the RE series and nonsense.

The story continues with the hunter but a couple of new plot directions and a super race of Lyans def helps the franchise keep going. Beckinsale contines to appeal and entertaine as Selene and the action is very well done. My only small gripes are very little Micheal acton and a possible sequel but hopefully the sequels will keep the good story going. Loved it.

Underworld has always been a fantastic Saga and I hope it will continue some more. Underworld Awakening takes on a slightly different path, than the previous movies where the story was based on the battle between Vampires and Lycans while trying to keep Humans completely in the dark to the war that had been going on, but this time, Selene, the Death Dealer, wakes up from Frozen Cryogenic Stasis to find out that the Cleansing has been completed by the Humans. The humans found out from the last battle, that Vamp's and Lycans are evidently real and they decided to try to wipe them all out. I will not go into too much detail, so not to spoil it, but Selene takes on a mother's role due to a genetic experiment that had been done by the humans. resulting into a young girl. The humans must be stopped and Micheal found. You need to watch this movie because there is a new kind of Genetically Enhanced Lycan that's bigger and meaner that the others, but are the Humans doing the tests and vaccinations, Humans or Lycans or vampires. Only you can find that out by watching the movie. 5 Thumbs Up, if there was 10 I would give a 10. This Movie is just as action packed and heart throbbing pace than the previous movies. Enjoy :)

I have to say this is least thrilling of the Underworld series, all though its great to see the shift in direction and story line. There is to much focus on a couple of new characters and it lets the movie down, though Kate Beckinsale does preform well...

liked this more than expected to,as we had heard from friends that it was rubbish. but same as with the other films the costumes etc were fantastic and of course you can't go wrong with Kate Beckinsale in pvc/leather and those boots! watching the credits was a plus with Evanescence's song Made Of Stone (Renholder Remix) playing! if you are looking for something mildly entertaining you can't go wrong with this movie, enjoy!

as with all previous underworld instalments this is exceptionally well done. One of my favourite all-time francises. Very well thought out " continuation" of story without loosing intensity or without becoming boring or 'overdone' as with so many other franchises. Not for the 'squeamish' or 'faint-hearted'. highly recomended

Loved it. While it's not the most involving story, it takes the best bits of the first film and stretches them into something similarly entertaining. Great for good sub effects too (lots of explosions and growls!).
