Let the carnal delights begin! The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1 is supposedly the reward for all of our suffering. Twihards have endured three movies worth of smouldering glances, angsty shirtlessness and reluctant abstinence with only the knowledge of the final instalments’ cathartic release to keep them going. Meanwhile, the haters who have had to endure the previous pictures due to boyfriendly/girlfriendly/film-critically duties were able to take solace in the fact the adaptation of Stephanie Meyer’s last Twilight book would be full of freaktastic treats.

This was to be the movie in which the relentlessly-uninteresting franchise finally embraced its dark, twisted side. We would get our first real glimpse of the orgasmic highs and blood-stained lows of Edward (Robert Pattinson) and Bella’s (Kristen Stewart) affair. For once, we would learn the true curse of the vampyr is not limited to mild sparkling and stilted line readings. Sadly, those promises have gone unfulfilled. Breaking Dawn Part 1 is just as tepid as its predecessors. The picture sidesteps all opportunities to depict the novel’s nuttiness (including intense virginity-loss, admissions of murder, a toothy caesarean section and a grown man falling in love with a baby) in an intriguing manner and sands down all the edges to leave us with yet another generic melodrama, in which not a single moment rings true. At least it loses a lot of the troubling subtext from earlier flicks, and replaces it with good ol' inoffensive nothingness (though your definition of 'inoffensive' may depend on how you feel about scenes in which an 18-year-old girl begs for sex from her hundred-year-plus husband).

The audience is cordially invited to the wedding of immortal vampire Edward Cullen and his human teenage girlfriend Bella Swan. It’s the social event of the supernatural calendar, and we get to admire every minute detail; from the dress, to the vows, to the cake, to the speeches and so on and so on. It’s like watching a lengthy photo slideshow made by relatives about their “special day”, except they’re not your relatives, and also you hate them (the Cullen clan make me feel quite uncomfortable). The newlyweds are then whisked away to an island off the coast of Brazil where they can finally consummate their marriage. And consummate they do! Bloodsucker Edward is a little too rough for the still mortal and very frail Bella though; he doesn’t want to risk hurting her again, so the metaphorical chastity belt is quickly re-attached. It may be too late. Somehow, the undead dude managed to get his child bride up the duff, and now a fast-growing human-vamp hybrid is threatening to kill its weak mommy. Her only chance for survival is an ironic one; she may need to become a vamp herself, much to the chagrin of her former love/current lycanthrope Jacob (Taylor Lautner).

Despite the Oscar-nominated chops of director Bill Condon, he can’t keep proceedings from feeling stagey (Breaking Dawn even feels stagier than his Dreamgirls… which largely took place on a stage). Without having read the books - I'm only aware of this tale's breathless insanity via Wikipedia - I don’t know whether to blame the awful dialogue on Meyer or dutiful screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg. Either way, yikes. The action sequences (of which there are mercifully few) are clumsily composed and feel like a lazy attempt to cram conflict into a film that is almost plot-free. That being said, it’s not the worst instalment of the saga (faint praise), and we get the best work from Stewart, Pattinson and Lautner yet (also faint praise). They’re only good scene-to-scene, but at least that’s something. Billy Burke also deserves credit for being reliably great as Mr. Swan. Still, the potential of Part 2 seems minimal. If Condon and co. couldn’t combine elements of The Fly and Rosemary’s Baby into a sexy, scary or super-weird concoction, we may as well consider the other, ‘boring’ half of Breaking Dawn dead in the water.

2/5

Pretty blah and boring, but then I gather it's aim is to set the story up for part 2. They could have made this part of the story much tighter with more action and interest going on.

Got so bored by this movie, post wedding scenes, that I fell asleep. Was determined to watch the whole dvd so tried again the following night and finished it finally! What happened to this one when the previous episodes were more that good. Let's hope the final is more than very good to make up for this one.

rather supernatural this time around. Not like the other 2 movies preceeding it. I didnt not enjoy this one as much however it is obviously used to explain the next one. If a twilight fan, obviously watch, but if not i wouldnt get excited!

Yawn! Is it still going? Yep. I've never seen such drawn out stupidity. The only time the movie piqued my interest was towards the end when Bella began changing. Perhaps I should have waited for part 2 and skipped this tedious bit of nothingness.

When will the saga end! What a load of boring, melodramatic rubbish. I found myself fast forwarding through most of it waiting for some action that briefly came at the end. Give me True Blood any day, I don’t even care anymore what happens.

The first half was surprisingly lighthearted for this series - I think there were even some smiles. Then it just became more of the same Edward vs Jacob story, with way too much concentration on the wolf pack. In all of that it stayed faithful to the book which was by far the worst of the four.

Thought it would at least be some brainless fun, but couldn't last the distance through the painful dialogue and dull, drawn out scenes made purely to satisfy teen fans

How do I respond to this??? The movie was well done, acting very good, special effects extremely good, in particular Bella's make up towards the end. So that is the good... It just went on and on far too long with stupid music bits, I thought I was watching "Video Hits" in parts. Probably a bit more a "chicks flick", the wife loved it. 2 stars from me and 5 from her.

I saw in the credits that the author of the Twilight novels, Stephanie Meyer, was one of the producers of this film. Not surprised by that, for the movie was exactly in line with the novel, the first half of the novel I should say. I would add that I wasn't a fan of the novels but have liked the movies - which are very well done. "Renesmee"? Sounds like a name from Kath and Kim where Kim's daughter was named "Epponee Rae". Ha. Anyway, the movies are polished and worth seeing, especially for fans of Meyer's story. The love scene with Bella and Edward is very touching, beautifully done.

If you are a Twihard, you'll love this movie regardless. However, if you are like me and have watched the previous 3 movies to see what all the fuss is about, this instalment is very poor. The first 75% of the movie is very slow and drawn out. It does get interesting during the final sequences of the movie, but it's too little too late. So for Twihards, it's a must, for those of us who have seen the previous 3 movies and have some sort of interest in keeping up with the story, it's OK. Expect very little and you won't be too disappointed. For those who don't know much about Twilight, avoid this instalment like the plague.

After all the mixed reviews I wasn't sure what to expect... but it's a thumbs up from me!!! Don't exactly know what held my interest, it's a good story, with good acting and character development. Strictly in the 'light entertainment' basket - but perhaps it is the secret memories invoked of teenage anticipation and imagination.... I couldn't stop watching and I will definately see this again. Look forward to pt 2 :)

This installment of the twilight series sees Bella and Edward get married with Bella coming back from the honeymoon pregnant to her vampire husband. Overall it was ok. In parts it made me cringe. Particularly the wolf voices. I went in with fairly low expectations so I wasn't disappointed. Having watched this film, I am interested to see how Bella reacts to being a vampire in the next one.

Look, you're not going to be able to even follow what's happening in this - let alone really enjoy it - unless you've read the books. For myself, I've enjoyed all the books and the films. They are not going to win any Oscars but they are beautiful visually - gorgeous people, great scenery, always a cracking soundtrack and a bit of fun if (sorry, again) you've read the books and can pick up on the in-jokes.

Oh my goodness! Worst of the series so far, didnt want to read the books before id seen the movies but im sure the books must have been better. I did enjoy the first half of the movie with the wedding and honeymoon but the rest was seriously depressing, also liked how the film showed Bella's tranformation, annoying that they couldnt just make one long movie instead of split in into two.

Finally the last instalement of Twlight Saga, abeit the New Teenage Cult Vampiric Films. Growing up in the Nighties, we were blessed of the Romanticism of being a Vampire - seeing a Vampire through there eyes, with the Anne Rice Movies - Intervies with a Vampire. It gaves Vampires a humanity, and we see this again in Stephanie Myers series. Perhaps, she is yet to mature as a writer, evident in her script. However, her inovation and imagination is very 21st century and achieves the immagery require for the subject matter. She may not be the most politicially correct writer, but her imagination and continutiny of the characters is that of a great storyteller. Edward and Bella's relationship achieves new levels of blood lust, and we are given enough of it in the Movie to satisfy our Vamipric desires. The Cullens family again makes there appearance with believable character growth. We learn more of the Wolf pack, which needed more character development and we get that in this movie. Tying together the anticipation & tense of the previous Movies finally come to fruitation. Bella now struggling with her humanity, as she now see's the differences between her and Edward's world. She ultimately is left with but one decision and she makes the subconsious choice rather early in the movie, leavinag the anticipation of her turning throughout the Movie. Most Interesting, is the relationship that develops between Jacob and the Baby, perhaps setting the tone for future films. I enjoyed this Movie, and accepted it for what it was, and not for some great litery work. I enjoy the imagery and the general story. It lived up to my expectations of the New Teenage Vampire Movie, giving Vampires again a humanity, and letting us view their lives and daily existance through our eyes. So many hot teenage topics too - Preganancy, Marriage, Love Triangles, Friends and Family, as Bella naviagates her way to becoming a Vampire. Fantasic Film and the One Twlight Fans will come to love the mmost.

I didn't get to watch it in the Cinema's, so I've been counting down the days! *SPOILER* The way they had the voices playing over the top of the normal noise when all the Wolves were surrounding Jake, and talking through the pack, was just so awesome. The fighting with the Cullens and the Quilette Tribe, SO FREAKIN AWESOME! The way Kristen stayed still soooo long while playing dead, AMAZING! ANNNNDDDDD when she broke her back, and the placenta de-tached, WICKED! SOOOOO HAPPY! :)
