Supernatural themes and violence

Director: Catherine Hardwicke
Actors: Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, Taylor Lautner, Billy Burke, Peter Facinelli, Nikki Reed, Elizabeth Reaser, Cam Gigandet, Jackson Rathbone, Ashley Greene

Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) has always been a little bit different, never caring about fitting in with the trendy girls at her Phoenix high school. When her mother remarries and sends Bella to live with her father in the rainy little town of Forks, Washington, she doesn't expect much of anything to change. Then she meets the mysterious and dazzlingly beautiful Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson), a boy unlike any she's ever met. Intelligent and witty, he sees straight into her soul. Soon, Bella and Edward are swept up in a passionate and decidedly unorthodox romance. Edward can run faster than a mountain lion, he can stop a moving car with his bare hands - and he hasn't aged since 1918. Like all vampires, he's immortal. But he doesn't have fangs, and he doesn't drink human blood; Edward and his family are unique among vampires in their lifestyle choice. To Edward, Bella is that thing he has waited 90 years for - a soul mate. But the closer they get, the more Edward must struggle to resist the primal pull of her scent, which could send him into an uncontrollable frenzy. But what will Edward and Bella do when James (Cam Gigandet), Laurent (Edi Gathegi) and Victoria (Rachelle Lefevre), the Cullens' mortal vampire enemies, come to town, looking for her?

Toothless and tasteless
by Simon Miraudo,

Vampires are sexy, or so I’m told. Women seem to find the idea of blood sucking and capes pretty erotic. So I was kind of surprised to see how 'anti-sex' Christine Hardwicke’s vampire flick Twilight was. Let's look at the basic storyline - a brooding teenage vampire is so obsessed with the intoxicating scent of a young girl, he’s worried he could lose control and tear her apart. If this film is about anything other than abstinence, I will eat my shoe. While that isn't necessarily a bad thing, it makes for a cripplingly boring film. The vampires are kindhearted and ultimately toothless. The conflict is limited and easily solvable. The teens don't need to have sex, they can just talk all night long. Twilight is an impotent failure.

When 17-year-old Bella Swan (Stewart) moves to the small town of Forks, Washington, all she wants to do is stay low and out of anyone’s way. She hates her new school, which is weird, because she’s befriended almost instantly by a really nice group of teenagers. She wishes she could move back to Phoenix, which makes no sense, because her corpse-like complexion would melt in the Arizona sun. Then she falls in love with local boy Edward Cullen (Pattinson), a mysterious, chalk-coloured hunk who can’t stand being around her.

It turns out Edward is a vampire, but Bella loves him anyway. After all, he is really hot. He warns her that he could tear her apart at any minute. He says he could rip her to shreds and drink her blood without breaking a sweat. She doesn’t budge. Like I said, he’s a hottie. So there’s the conflict. Edward is infatuated with Bella, whose scent is the most delicious he’s ever smelt. Bella is madly in love with Edward, because he looks at her like she’s a piece of steak, and in the sunshine his skin is glittery. Maybe it’s a convincing love story if you’ve never actually been in love before. I guess this is why teenage girls are eating this film up.

I assume these characters have more depth in Stephanie Meyer’s wildly successful book on which the film is based. Their relationship in the film is just plain creepy. Edward sneaks into her room and watches her sleep on several occasions, he stalks her without her knowing, and then he tells her to stay away from him, because he fears his compulsion to kill her will become too great. And then Bella says stuff to Edward like “I’d rather die than to stay away from you” and “I dream about being with you forever”. Yikes. This is how domestic abuse starts.

I am desperately racking my brain to think of positive things to say about this film. Hardwicke (whose first film, Thirteen, captured teenagers much more accurately) keeps the action in first gear with her plodding, lifeless direction. She seems to desperately want to minimise the amount of conflict in the film, and keep things squarely on Bella and Edward's endless love. A subplot involving some rival, murderous vampires feels awkwardly tacked on. The dialogue is ridiculous. The acting, virtually unbearable. Robert Pattinson's hair is working much harder than Pattinson himself. The special effects, a joke. Speeding up film doesn’t make it look like people are running fast. I learnt that in Year 10 Media.

The success of this film boggles my mind. It has grossed upwards of $150 million in the U.S already, and if last night’s packed cinema was anything to go by, it’s likely to be huge in Australia as well. A quick inquiry of the people around me revealed a lot of young ladies had dragged their boyfriends along (my own dragged-along girlfriend fell asleep about forty minutes in). I overheard a couple girls on the way out talking about wanting to see the film again. That sounds like hell to me.

It's clear that teenage girls are loving it. Part of me wants to argue that this film is actually dangerous for young girls to see (it’s the biggest glorification of an abusive relationship I’ve ever seen in cinema). But the rest of me just thinks, "whatever". There’s nothing quite like seeing your favourite book on the big screen (my own excitement for Watchmen has been well documented) and I don’t want to take that away from Twilight fans. Everyone else, you’ve been warned.

0.5/5

This is a truly terrible film and I'm really glad I've never paid to see it. I watched about 45 minutes of it on Australian telly while I was randomly channel surfing. As I've never been a "Twi-hard" - I hadn't seen the film or the books (I have one or two friends who are fans) - but thought I would see what all the fuss was about. I'm not swayed by the toothsome charms of vampires myself. Interview With The Vampire is a better choice if you're into that sort of thing. I probably watched about an hour of the film and it is truly appalling stuff. The leads are obviously getting paid money for nothing because I didn't see much acting going on. The script is rubbish, the special effects were uninspiring and there was just nothing in it that made me care about the characters. I personally couldn't see the appeal of the pasty, scrawny, whiny, delicate, suffering little Edward when all these other lovely cute boys were asking Bella out and crying out for her attention (though for the life of me I can't think why as she seemed so boring, lifeless and uninteresting ). It's could list many reasons why this film is just BAD BAD BAD - but what difference will it make? Sadly I am sure the film makers, the actors and the author of the books are probably laughing all the way to the bank.

Just finished reading the books to see what all the hype was about - definately aimed at the tweens and maybe mid 20s at best! Thought I'd check the movies out - the jury is still out with Twilight... As it loosely followed the book, it lost a lot of translation along the way. Better to watch the movie beofre reading the book. Character typecast was a bit disappointing, only Taylor Lautner seemed to do a good portrayal of his character, Jacob.

I loved this movie. Had been wanting to watch this for a long time. 14yr old son wouldn't allow it in the house he thought it was a love story. Made him watch it with me, he didn't dislike or like it, wasn't what he thought it would be. My 16 yr old daughter enjoyed it, we'll watch the next one's together. Loved the song playing during the baseball game. Played it over and over in the special features. I'm a 40 somethingish married mum of 4 and now a Twilight fan.

Okay, so I liked the books. Quite a lot. Not to the point of obsession, but enough that I was like 'Oh cool, Twilight's here.' Yeah, thats about as enthusiastic as I get. Anyway, I watched it once, because I thought it was good, and I liked the storyline. I watched it again, a few days later (I was bored, okay?) and I realised 'Wow. This kinda sucks.' Honestly, I blame it on the directing. Katherine Hardwicke, not the best director out there. The special effects could've been better, too. It looks like they just got the 'vampires' to run normally and then fast forward(ed?) it. Honestly, I'm not sure why the rest of it was so bad. Again, I think it comes back to the directing. I think most directors just have something that brings a certain story to life. And whatever it is, I just don't think Katherine Hardwicke has. I think Kristen Stewart plays the part of Bella Swan well, but mainly just because she seems to have the same characteristics as Bella in real life. Oh, and also when Bella walks into biology, Edward (or Robert Pattinson, whatever you wanna call him) looks like he's sucking on a lemon. Just saying.

Pretty straight forward tale of how dangerous it is to love a vampire, which harkens back to Interview with a Vampire, Angel, Near Dark and even a bit Hammer Horror in places. I loved the climbing trees scenes, which show a hint of Chinese movie ancestry in general and remind me specifically of the bamboo scene in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Also, the drumming music was pretty amazing and maintained the tension well. It's a little unbelievable in parts. Why would he really want her to grow old and die when he can make her immortal? It's already established that the family of vampires he belongs to drink animal blood, so what's the big deal? Yes, so that there can be a sequel with interesting conflict. Unfortunately, I think there should be a better reason, but moving right along. Ok, it's all a bit cheesy (those would be the Hammer Horror bits) and mostly for teenage girls, but I enjoyed it and so did my (male) partner. How can you resist that 'I love you in a tortured kind of way' thing? Well, ok - I can see that some people might - it was all a bit silly. For teenage girls in general, people who liked Interview with a Vampire will probably like this. Vampire movie fans should probably see it and make up their own minds. Action fans: it gets very slow at points.

Definitly aimed at the teenage girl, with a little action to make the boy pay for the ticket... Lots of sensual innuendo... lots of dragged out scenes.... I dont know why the girls swoon over a guy that is sickly pale, has a Elvis Presley hairdo (but too untidy), and talk like he is in slow motion.... but hey that kiss in the neck... I have to practice that :) The action scenes where excellent, but not enough... For the teenage market: ideal, for me: not enough of one and tomuch of another still, I watched t till the end, so worth something.

I loved the movie, enjoyed every second of it - love all that fantasy stuff - and Robert Pattison is so easy on the eyes!! However - I have a major complaint, the state of the DVD, it froze 4 times, and I had to take it off and give it a really good clean. I don't want to be sent DVD's in that state, please, it ruined the whole movie for me. I would have given it 5 stars, but have to take off one for the state of the DVD itself.

I have held off watching any of the Twilight saga movies, but as I am home sick I thought why not take a look. I was pleasantly suprised. The film was engaging, and kept me watching to the end. I can say I enjoyed the film, perfect if you are in the mood for something where you can just watch and not have to think, or spend hours "analysing" the film afterwards. We all need films like this once in a while!

I can't understand what all the hype was about. This is the worst movie I have seen in ages. With all the movie making technology available to us today, why do all the 'vampires' have such baaaaad make-up jobs? And apparently nothing we previously believed about vampires is true, not only do they not turn to dust in the sunlight, they actually sparkle prettily. Bad acting, really bad make-up and no story to follow. Don't waste your time.

Oh dear!! We took out this film to see what all the fuss is about. Well! In our over 50 years of age opinion, it just wasn't worth the effort - in fact, we gave up about two thirds of the way through. We felt it was badly acted, badly written, and very poorly made. Some of the cgi scenes were quite laughable! It is possible for films to be made for both young and not so young - the Harry Potter series for example. We must say, Twilight, in our opinion did not live up to the hype!!!!

Maybe I am too old now and should have tried the experience much earlier. The scenery & special effects were the best part but the movie was so slow with little climax, I found the whole experience uneventful. Summing up what a total waste of 2 hours, I kept waiting for it to get better but it didn???t??????????????????. Sorry about that poor attempt at humour!! . If you are a ???baby boomer??? don???t bother, a lot to do about nothing, I think this whole vampire thing sucks.

All the males that i know hate the movie/movies Too sum it up its buffy, true blood and the lost boys. its terrible in how the story line was produced its terrible in how none of the people actually acted and it was just the love story no storyline to it whatsoever. it is just terrible in eveery single detail there is

I have been told that you need to read the book, but as I have difficultly reading the movie was the next best option. Twilight draws you in and build as the film progresses, as far as vampier movies goes this one is so left of centre that you don't realy realise that it is infact a vampire movie. For some one that was not realy interested in seeing Twilight in the first place this film captivated me and I would highly recommend it.

What a terrible movie! Although to be honest I was not a fan of the book either. I could never tell if the conversation between the 2 main characters was supposed to be so stilted or it if was just bad acting. If it was supposed to be that way was it necessary to be so for the entire movie? I found it to be a whole lot of boring right up until the end where it was just a little less boring.

What was all the hype about? As far as vampire movies go this was pretty average. The plot was, well there was no plot really. The acting, well let's just say it was not great, in fact in a couple of places I laughed at the over-dramatic acting and that's saying something for a vampire film. Even the soundtrack seemed mismatched and even noticeably absent in places. I have to say I was pretty dissapointed and seeing how it took Bigpond 8 months to get this over-rated movie to my door it was a total waste of time. If you are a female tween who just wants to watch a bit of eye candy in the male lead of Robert Pattison then this is the flick for you, if you are a fan of the vampire genre then this definitely aint for you.

As another person who hates the simplicity of knowing vampire movies, i was taken by suprise. This isnt just about feeding on humans. Great movie but i must say the books are way better and more detailed. Cant wait for new moon

I dont really find Robert Pattinson "hot" at all (or any other pale skinned emo looking men for that matter!) so I am probably one of the last people to see this movie but it was actually better than I expected. It was totally different to what I was expecting and not as "dark" as most vampire movies tend to be. There arent many good vampire movies with good storylines out there and now I am looking forward to watching the next instalment! One thing I will say though is that they have changed some of the "rules of vampires"... you know the whole cant go in sunlight and have no reflection etc but it wasnt in a bad way!

This movie is a must see, especially after there are so many versions of vampires and many takes on how they live and what can kill them, it is amazing to watch all different story lines of different vampire movies. This one is one of my favourite as I have watched it a few times and cannot wait to watch the sequeal to it. What amazed me was the makeup on the actors especially edward as the makeup really made him look like a vampire but not disguisting like as you still thought he was cute and can he take you in his arms like that. The acting between these 2 lead stars were incredible, you could actually feel the sexual tension in most scenes which was a trait most legendary actors cannot achieve in their films. I give this move 5 stars and definately buy it and watch it over and over again.

Very enjoyable new take on the Vampire mythos. The film brilliantly realized all the awkwardness of being a teenager. And what a sublime male lead - a brooding hunk of a vampire!

This is a something teenagers would probably enjoy more than adults as it has that young innocence of falling in love sense to it. I am no fan of vampire movies but combined with a love story, I guess it provides for interesting entertainment.

After all the hype I thought this movie would be pretty good. How wrong I was. The first half of the movie in unbelievably dull, the special effects and acting are average at best. I just don't see the appeal. Do yourself a favour and watch 'Lost Boys' instead, now that's a vampire movie.

I liked it. Always prefer the book of any movie/book so can't really judge on that basis. But I thought it was a pretty decent interpretation. As a teenage girl, I must say, I love you Jacob.

Would have liked to see the movie flesh out (pun intended) more of the emotional content of the book. I had a real emotional reaction to the book and this is my only gripe with the movie...apart from it being too short (another 30 mins would have been great). Having said that, the movie is very good. I don't quite "get" the whole "Robsten" thing but they certainly have chemistry and I liked the actors/roles of Edward's family. Looking forward to seeing the next movie.

I'm definitely no teenager, but I really enjoyed this movie. I think there's enough here for teenagers and adults to enjoy. I haven't read any of the books, and I was a skeptic, so I think it's testament to the direction and storytelling that I found this movie highly entertaining, especially at my age (well over 40). I find myself inexplicably looking forward to the next installment !

I absolutely ADORED the book. I was a bit disappointed with the movie. Maybe it was because I had such great expectations from the book? I'm not saying the movie was bad, I just didn't get as excited watching it as I did when reading the book. At least the movie is like the book, unlike some other movies that are based on books.

It was a enjoyable way to spend an evening. If you don't try to over analyse this movie you will enjoy it. Who cares if its not believable thats why we watch movies to escape from reality.

I see I'm very alone in being disappointed with this movie. If I hadn't read the book, I'd pass throw this in the pile of crap teen vampire movies, with poor acting and little depth. I know they were trying to show the vampires as looking 'alien' in some points, but the wide eyed staring just looked idiotic. Not needing to blink shouldn't mean looking like you're permanently surprised.

Hardwicke tried her utmost to stick to what Meyer had written, but with the time and budget restraints in movies, it was near on impossible to fit everything in. This movie is an amazing adaptation of Meyers fantasy world. I adore the book's so much, but knowing that the time and money issues this movie had, I watched the DVD with a clear mind on what I was about to see. It paid off, I enjoyed every moment of the movie, just as much as I did the book's. I can't wait for November 09 for the next movie in the 'Twilight' saga.

I was so disappointed in this movie. I was very wrapped in the books and hesitated in watching this because of the mixed reviews. I felt it sped through everything too quickly and there are so many things left unexplained. The acting was b grade and considering the success of the books, i would have thought this would have been very important to the producers. Having said all that, I do find myself wanting to watch it all over again...

Over-hyped and under-delivered. With acting (and story) reminiscent of an epsiode of 'Home and Away' and zero chemistry between the two stars, I was ultimately left disappointed and wanting more. Well, of course I was left wanting more because that is exactly what is going to happen, with sequel after sequel. So there is no tension because you know everyone is going to be fine for the next instalment. Too much theatrical make-up on our fanged friends too. There were way too many plot holes too, like it takes Bella about 3 days to figure something out but her father, the local Police chief, is blissfully ignorant of the beastly goings-on in the town of Forks. He doesn't even know what happened to the can of pepper spray that he replaces for Bella! No story or character development of Jacob and the rest of the Native Americans either. Must be in the next episode...

Usually when movies are so over hyped they usually don't live up to the hype. I don't hate this film but I strongly feel they wasted a good premise. Bella moves to a new town and falls in love with Edward who has a dark sercet. When she finds out hes a vampire he and his family must protect Bella from a rouge band of vampires who want Bella for dinner and not as a guest. The acting and characters are strong plus the two leads play their roles very well but the direction is far too much set up and bogs down in lovely dovely scenes which should had been deleted scenes and more vampire action filmed. The film is very tame for a vampire film and shows an impressive fight between two vampires but Buffy and Angel did the same thing on tv years ago and those shows had a better balance between the fight and tender scenes. I found the film very average and hopefully they will improve on the sequals.

If you've read the books you'll know you'll love the movie. Its exactly how you read it in your mind, The Cullens, James and Victoria etc etc. The only downfall is Kristen Stewart she is so flat and one dimensional as Bella Swan. They really could have found someone better. The writing is great, the plot flows nicely if not a little slow in the beginning. The special effects looks great and you can't help but be mesmerised by the Cullens and the actors who play them. Here's to New Moon. I gave it 5/5 even though Kristen Stewart does ruin it.

The Cullens are not your conventional bloodsuckers. No fangs, no eating humans, they sparkle in the sunlight and like to play baseball. This book to movie adaptation sensation succeeds in bringing this modern day Romeo and Juliet ?forbidden love? story to life. I really enjoyed watching the film and can?t wait to see what tricks they?ll pull to make the second one just as big. I would definitely recommend this movie (and book series) for women of all ages.

I love love loved this movie! Like most die-hard Twilight fans I have read all the books, so my opinion could be biased. Although I took some friends who hadn?t and now they want to, so I guess the film leaves you wanting to know all the ins and outs of the characters and what happens next. You need to watch it with an open mind to all that you think you know about vampires, as they are not your conventional bloodsuckers. No fangs, no killing humans (well the bad ones do), they sparkle in the sunlight (as opposed to burning to a crisp) and they like to play baseball. So if you can look past all that to the heart of the story which is the forbidden and dangerous love between human and vampire then you should be able to appreciate the film. Because let?s face it ? who doesn?t want to believe that soul mates exist. The special effects were really quite good considering the measly budget the filmmakers had to work with. I can?t wait to see what they do for the next one, and how they manage to keep these ?never-ageing? vampires looking the same in all the films. Bring on New Moon!
