not too bad...good photography...the young girl stole the show with her acting
A lot of stilted un-natural script, sounded odd. Maybe intended for effect. Top grade acting and storyline, up to near the end, when there appeared to be a short cut put in to end the film at a certain time limit. Certainly a movie worth viewing.
It was a cowboy film a bit like the 50's but better made
Another excellent film by the Coen bros. It has snappy and witty dialogue and the acting is top class. The story falls a bit flat at the end but it doesn't really take anything away from an all-round terrific movie.
Excellent dialogue, strong characters well done
Loved this. Another great Coen brothers flick. The scenery was amazing and Jeff Bridges is fantastic as the battle weary Marshall. I think it could have been slightly longer and given the main scenes more time to play out.
what a boring movie!. John wayne version alot better
I love this movie! I saw it at the cinema and again recently on DVD. It has the whole package - excellent character acting (though sub-titles for Jeff Bridges would have been useful!), beautiful wild west scenery, captivating screenplay with plenty of humour, drama and tension. I think young Hailee Steinfeld is amazing and perfectly cast, she is a truly feisty young lady with as much 'true grit' as some of the other tough characters. The cast of bad guys is superb, they are menacing and quite frightful to look at. This is one movie I could watch repeatedly.
terrible movie, painful to watch
really liked this movie much more than i thought i would.
Not up to the original but a well crafted movie all the same.
One of the best, most authentic, entertaining, well crafted and acted movies that I've seen in a long time. A real surprise.
I was very disappointed, I am a big fan of the Coen brothers but this movie does not have the qualities of other Coen brothers movies. The story is not particularly inspiring.
A young teenager Mattie Ross (Hailee Steinfeld) is very determined to capture Tom Chaney (Josh Brolin) a hired hand who shot her father in cold blood. To aid her, she hires a trigger-happy and drunken US Marshal, Rooster Cogburn (Jeff Bridges). Against his wishes, she joins him in his trek into Indian territories to search for Chaney. They are joined by a Texas Ranger LaBoeuf (Matt Damon), who wants Chaney for another reason. Chaney is finally caught and killed. During the shooting, Mattie falls into a cave, is bitten by a snake and saved by Cogburn but loses her left arm. Almost 20 years later, Mattie who never married goes in search of Cogburn and LaBoeuf to meet and thank them for their past endeavour. The DVD is in excellent colour, the acting by no-nonsense Steinfeld and amiable Bridges brilliant. In the film, he speaks with a heavy accent which adds to the character he depicts. I saw glimpses of the previous film True Grit with John Wayne as the US Marshal. Personally, Bridges surpasses Wayne in characterising the trigger-happy drunken US Marshal. The special segment Features on the DVD is very interesting, with the film producer, director, designer and cast making commentaries.
Couldn't get into this. I tried really hard but it was soo boring. Turned it off after about 25 mins...... I can see how people would like it so only rent it if your really into this style of movie.
Steinfeld buts in an amazing performance, Jeff Bridges mumbles a lot and Matt Damon seems to be in there for no good reason. I almost turned over to watch Brewsters Millions halfway through. Disappointing for a Coen brothers movie.
A beautifully made movie.
By no means is True Grit one of the greatest westerns ever or even one of the Coen brothers' greatest films, but this little throwback to a genre that has had its day is certainly an admirable one. Again, not up to the standard of some Western classics, but certainly indicates enough that Hollywood needs to make more movies like this.
Not a big fan of western however I like quite a lot Cohen's work. The acting and directing are superbe, the storyline is quite simple. Some of the actors I usually don't enjoy are in this incredibly good. The Cohen's brothers have done an excellent job of what could have been a very cliche, boring plot. You will wonder why you are keeping watching a story so unoriginal and that's what makes the difference between great directing and poor one.
Disappointing but quite enjoyed.Acting poor
A typical John Wayne movie, enjoyable if you have nothing better to do
i have never been a huge fan of westerns so i was never going to rate this really high, i thought it was pretty average which really means that this was not bad and if you love westerns i would say you would love it!
A Marshall is hired by a young girl to track down the killer of her father. A tough western with strong performances from the leads.
Possibly even better than the John Wayne version. Asexpected of the Coen Brothers an excellent entertainment. Great imagery and acting set in great scenery with excellent music. Deserves 6 stars!
Enjoyed very much. Decent acting. Kept interest.
A very unusual movie, very good acting, beautiful scenery, and somehow quite convincing of the way people lived in the old wild west. The Coen Brothers always have an interesting, quirky slant to their movies. This was quite engaging without being too gorey.
Excellent cast and brilliantly acted. Really well written. Watched it twice in one day it was that good.
Great movie. As good as the John Wayne version but better filming.
Under-whelming, with much of the dialogue, of which there is a lot, hard to hear and understand due to the drawl. Dull
I liked this movie, although was not too keen on the dialogue, but I suppose it went with the era at the time. I thought the story was good.
Really loved Jeff Bridges in this but at times I found him a bit hard to understand. Want to watch the one with John Wayne now to compare.
Wow! This was recommended to me by my adult sons, who know their movies.
I am SO glad they did recommend it. I am old enough to remember the original with John Wayne. This is better, much better. Young Hailee Seinfeld as Mattie Ross is outstanding, seeking to bring the killer of her father to justice. Jeff Bridges as the US Marshal Rooster Cogburn is equally as good. Matt Damon as a Texas Ranger does a good supporting role. Highly recommend for superb acting.
Don't you love it when a movie allows you to see a long-term actors in a new light. Very nice remake.
yuk John Wayne would roll over in his grave what a insult to a excellent cowboy movie of the past
Great movie, another Cohen brothers classic
great movie even thou Jeff Brdges mumbled thru it .worth watching
There was some very good individual acting but they didn't seem to gel together or maybe it was the story that missed the mark.
The scenes of the making etc. where more interesting than the actual movie.
Okai movie.... not much impressive....
A great modern western, with a little bit of comedy added.
Yeah sure, it's not as good as the original, get over it film snobs ! I liked the original and I liked this one in it's own right although Rooster is a bit of a mumbler at times.
I can't rate this movie highly enough. The Cohen Bros crafted this movie so carefully and with great detail to every detail, it is stunning. It grounds a lot of silly unrealistic stuff you see in westerns and creates a reality you can believe. The acting is spot on the mark, and the characters feel like they are from that period.
Brilliant movie, cohen brothers are great storytellers. One of the best movies of 2010.
Top performance by Bridges, but on the whole the film doesn't measure up to the John Wayne effort.
This was recommended to me by a friend... Not really a fan of the cowboy/western movies. The little girl was very determined, that was probably the only thing I liked about the movie.
Great story. Wonderful acting.
ok if you know of the story line, good to watch once i guess
Great movie loved it, good story, the female lead was brilliant, Rooster Cogbburn a little hard to understand. But a worthwhile watch
A great drama with fine performances. I don't have a problem recommending this film to absolutely everyone. My favourite Coen Brothers movie.
I own the original with John Wayne and I found i loved this movie too.Fantastic.
Perhaps it's an advantage to have not seen the original, becuase I loved this version. Jeff Bridges improves with age, and he had a fair bit of improving to do! And Hailee Steinfeld more than holds her own with the impressive cast including a very funny Matt Damon. Very Coen Bros. Very good.
Good story with some surprising laughs. Very Coen bros.
Apart from the fact that Jeff Bridges needs subtitles in order to hear anything he says this movie is wonderful. A wide wandering epic about a young girl hell bent on revenge. Hailee Steinfeld is amazing as the young headstrong Mattie Ross while Matt Damon is surprisingly funny, as is a lot of True Grit. Hidden comic gems are everywhere but then so is an underlying dread. This is a balance that The Coen Brothers strike time and time again. The sobering end of True Grit defines this. A must see movie.
Great cast and actjng but not but preety dull
I found the best parts of the picture was when the little girl was telling people off, bargaining and getting her own way, and the vast range of the vocabulary she used. Very humorous! Matt Damon's character didn't get much development and he could not pull of a texan accent. Jeff Bridges always plays these drunken roles well, but it felt a little disjointed when it jumped to the end 20 years later.
Brilliant film from the Coen Brothers. Beautifully shot, impeccably cast, together with a trademark quirky Coen brothers script. Often difficult to make out what Jeff Bridges and Matt Damon are saying ... but that's part of the fun! A great movie that should appeal to more than lovers of the genre.
What a disappointment! I finally got to see it on DVD after remembering how well it was reviewed when it first came out as a cinema release. But I'm of a generation that remembers the original make with John Wayne starring as Rooster Cogburn. The original was inspiring and one worth seeing over again.
It always makes me wonder why filmmakers go to all the millions and trouble to remake a movie that is already a cinema classic. If they get it right the first time, why do it? The only movie I can remember, in recent history, that actually pulled that off was the Roald Dahl story of Charlie and the Chocolate factory - though I will add the original version with Gene Wilder remains my favourite.
Rooster Cogburn, well! The director here goes to lengths, rather boringly so, to make this man out to be such a hard case. The court scene was overblown, unsubtle as a sledge hammer and guaranteed to have the audience thoroughly sorted so there's no confusion at all about the personality of this character - and that applied to every other character in the movie.
The justice doled out to Tom Chaney was like "oh, big deal" - all that effort just for an anticlimax. But what was the most unsettling was the final scene of the middle aged Mattie Ross. A hard piece of souless wood and like the last spike nailed into a coffin. I found this scene particularly arrogant of the filmmakers.
I'm so over Spielberg, the producer of this movie, he always tries too hard. The whole thing left me with nothing but thinking that I merely endured it. It spent its time showcasing the so-cool of these characters without giving anything inspiring to the audience. Yes, it tries too hard to impress.
Nowhere near the Duke's version which they attempt to take off. It can be summed up with the most frequent word used in the movie: "s##t".
I am a huge HUGE john wayne fan. This was not even close to the original move. Not even close to been close.
Could have been heaps better but fell pretty short of the original.
A really good western.Acting at all levels was really good, particularly Hailee Steinfeld.Wow.What a talent.
The script was great, costumes were spot on as were the accents of that era.
Also the guy who played the horseman with the bear suit was excellent.
Love everything by The Coen Bros...except this. Thought it would be a lot better and I didn't think Jeff Bridges played the character that well or convincing. Better westerns out there for sure and this was a bit of a let down.
I can understand why so many rate this film the best of 2010. While I enjoyed the John Wayne version, I felt that this remake was better in just about every way. Excellent acting and a visual treat.
depressing, i expected it to get better but it didn't
Loved it very entertaining I was surprised as I am not a big fan of westerns but this was well worth watching.
If you have seen the original, you would know that they changed the ending and made it much worse.... aside from that, great acting from Jeff Bridges and good cover.
A great remake of the John Wayne version. However, you have to listen carefully because of the heavy accents. Not sure about the ending.
my wife is not a fan of westerns and even she thought that this was an excellent film
Wasnt as good as the original one, was still good
Loved the movie, Jeff Bridges was great as was the young Standfield, Mat Damon was a bit limp but that was his role.
The ending of the movie was simply unforgiveable.
Why does hollywood have to give us miserable endings, the movie producers must be a sad, sick and miserable lot.
The acting was so good, however on many occassions it was very hard to understand the dialog due to the heavy accents :-(
A surprisingly simple and honest story of a girl seeking blood revenge on the man who killed her father. I went in expecting gun-slinging cowboy caricatures distracting from a plot-less bore of a film, and instead found myself immersed in a captivating plot with complex characters, and a refreshingly understated view of bounty hunting and adventure. Even the few show downs are keep as honest and modest, and the impact is far greater. Full of suspense, excitement, and some deeply sombre moments, True Grit raises far above my expectations and stands alone as the best genre movie I've seen, possibly ever.
A believable western - hard to picture a 14yr old girl being that mature - but the actress was very convincing!
Hmmmmm, the Cohen brothers really did a number on this one.
Top movie for a remake of John Wayne's. Didn't like the ending tho.
Very good acting but needs more action.
Awesome acting!! Loved it big time!!
Pretty poor excuse for a modren western. Not my cup of tea!
good movie, but i did not think it was as good as the john wayne version.
I really feel like I should have enjoyed this movie more. There were really good things about it - the actors were great - apart from initially really struggling to understand a word Jeff Bridges was saying; I thought the idea of the story was good, but it just seemed to be missing something and left me feeling really flat and dissatisfied. The movie also initially had quite a sense of humor about it and then later just became totally depressing and of a completely different character - I've tried reading into this to see if the writers/director were trying to make a point but I realised that I actually really don't care enough to analyse it. I wouldn't watch it again although I'm sure there are plenty of people who would really love it - I"m just not one of them!
Wonderful adaptation by the Coens of Charles Portis' classic novel. The scenery, shot beautifully by long-time collaborator Roger Deakins, looks fabulous, and the wry sardonic humor of the screenplay is up to their best. For those complaining of inability to understand Jeff Bridges, simply turn on the subtitles, and you wont miss a thing. Best movie from Quickflix so far.
this was like watching reruns of LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRERIE, boring we gave up half way
Difficult to understand accents
liked the john wayne version better, but this was ok
this dvd was faulty couldnt watch it as it ceased our dvd player
Not as good as the original.
This film is disappointing!
With the new technology available one would expect to see it used to add something exciting to the original version. I mean why bother with a remake if you don't make it exciting.
For those who haven't seen the remake, this is a decent film, but not one to rave about.
Very good.. really surprised how much I enjoyed this one. Good modern day western.
A great remake of the original, the main characters remain true to the story. If you haven't seen the original with John Wayne and liked this see it.
I have seen the John Wayne original and i thoroughly enjoyed this one.
Good story line but couldn't understand a word Jeff Bridges was saying!!
Outstanding performances by the cast, particularly the young girl. A classic western.
Jeff Bridges' incessant mumbling throughout this movie makes what would otherwise be a great performance a sub-par one and makes the movie frustrating and hard to watch. The start was really very slow and felt like it dragged on too much but the last half an hour is really worth the watch which is what brought my rating up to 3 stars instead of just 2.
A tough U.S. Marshal helps a stubborn young woman track down her father's murderer. Hailee Steinfeld is wonderful as Mattie Ross and Jeff Bridges is perfectly cast as grizzled Rooster Cogburn
While Jeff Bridges was hard to understand for most in my household, I discovered I speak drunken cowboy and had very little problem understanding his mumblings. It's fabulously acted, but the highlight for me was the writing. Some lines of pure genius are sprinkled throughout. I could really see Glenn Campbell (who play Lebouf in the original) coming through in Matt Damon as well. A great watch.
I really enjoyed this movie.I havent seen the original;but Jeff Bridges does an outstanding job as Rooster Coghburn in this movie;and the young girl who portrays Mattie(her first major role too) is wonderful.Matt Damon provides comedy as well.Would recommend this movie very highyly.
It is a good movie and keeps you entertain the whole time
different sort of movie not quite what we expected
A good story line & acting performances, A little slow at times but still worth a look. If you like Wyatt Earp or Clint Eastwood westerns then this one is for you.
No doubt a good movie, with some top notch acting. Worthy of 3.5 stars, but just lacked that something special to push it into 4 or 5 star territory.
Was a good enjoyable old fashion western movie, also had trouble with jeff bridges accent and mumbling, movie had a bit of humour which made it light and enjoyable, only wished there was a tad more action and more typical western shoot outs.
Excellent remake... I wish all remakes were as good as this.
Brilliant movie, Jeff Bridges stars as ever! Hailee Steinfeld is a star in the making! I could watch it over and over.
I am a Cohen Bros fan, so am biased. Just love the quirk of each character, that is what the Cohen Bros do best. Loved Jeff Bridges character, and that of the little girl. A lot more fun than I was expecting.
A enjoyable movie and the girl was fabulous. What brought down the rating for me was that I could only understand half of what Jeff Bridges was saying because of his mumbling. That was the type of character he was playing but disappointing. Mind you, it didn't seem to affect understanding the movie.
Excellent. Wonderful acting.
Not a film I would give 3 1/2 stars. Couldn't understand what the girl was saying many times.
A good film, but lacking a Coen brothers twist. Not different enough from the original to warrant a remake, although it does seem a bit more authentic.
A story about a 14 year old girl's determination to capture her father's murderer. True grit is really about this adorable and feisty girl. The ending has a little more grit than expected but nonetheless a enjoyable film.
I expected a much grittier movie - this was like a Disney movie with a bit of gun shooting in it. Would recommend to teenage girls for inspiration and they may find this edgy - but not for adults who want an edgy movie.
Brilliant
better than the original
I normaly dont like remakes
well acted
well directed
well shot
great locations
well worth seeing
like the reviews mention before this is a outstanding coen borthers film. The only disappointment was the ending the forward segment 25 years on torn down everthing you fall in love with, with the 14yo character
THIS WAS A ENTERTAINING MOVIE. A LITTLE SLOW AT THE START BUT WHEN IT GOT GOING VERY ENJOYABLE.
A great movie. Saw the original with John Wayne years ago, this one is better (unlike most remakes which a usually c**p). Well worth the viewing time. Expected Coen high standard.
a good old fashioned entertaining movie. Would reecommend.
Welcome back to the Western. Grittier than the original movie it still follows the original screenplay and the memorable quotes of '...One eyed fat man' and 'fill your hands..' are still there. It is still an entertaining 106 minutes of entertainment with the actress playing the young Mattie Ross doing a fine job. Jeff Bridges and Mat Damon are good in support.
A straightforward story, with enough twists to keep it interesting. But it would be nothing without the feisty, determined and gritty girl at the centre of the story. The Special Features show the remarkable efforts that went into the costumes and location designs, done so well they go unnoticed in the movie.
simply put a modern western done the old fashioned way. all the elements are there, with fanasitc actors and storyline. Hailee deserves all the attention she received, her role makes the movie. more violence shown than in the older type westerns but in keeping with storyline.31/2 stars simply as not really into western movies but after all the reports on this one, worth a look.
