Standard Coen Brothers Review Template: [Insert movie title] is the latest opus from the supremely talented writer/director/producer/editor duo. They reach into the annals of movie history to toy with the styles and conventions of a traditional [insert genre], and once again tell the parable of a man who unlawfully comes into some money, and is cosmically punished for his crimes. Carter Burwell’s score and Roger Deakins’ cinematography are peerless, and the performances are brilliant across the board. But best of all are the glimpses of the Coens' finger marks throughout proceedings; they’re like two wickedly funny deities who have crafted a cruel world in which everyone has a whip-fast sense of humour. It’s enough to make the doomed fates of even their most honourable characters palatable. [Restate movie title] is brilliant.

Reviewing the films of Joel and Ethan Coen is getting a little boring, even if the movies themselves never do. I’ll let that opening paragraph act as a basic overview for anyone who was already convinced to see True Grit on the basis of it being directed by the Coens. Over the course of three decades, they’ve given us fifteen pictures. In my opinion, thirteen are brilliant, and two (The Hudsucker Proxy and The Ladykillers) are just O.K. Still, that’s one hell of a batting average. With their impressive filmography they have established themselves as the auteurs of choice for movie geeks and general audiences alike; there is no genre they are yet to conquer, no accolade they are yet to receive. Of their fifteen films, only three have been adapted from books (excluding the influence of The Book of Job on A Serious Man). O Brother Where Art Thou riffed on Homer’s Odyssey, No Country for Old Men was based on the Cormac McCarthy novel of the same name, and their latest, True Grit, is adapted from Charles Portis’ 1968 tome (itself made into a movie by Henry Hathaway in 1969). Needless to say, their standards are high when it comes to picking an author worthy of their Midas touch.

In the interest of full disclosure, I will admit that I’ve not read Portis’ novel, nor have I seen the film adaptation for which John Wayne received an Oscar as U.S. Marshal Rooster Cogburn. I understand that the Coens take differs from the film and remains truer to the novel by returning the focus to that of fifteen-year-old Mattie Ross (a spectacularly confident Hailee Steinfeld). Young Mattie is on the hunt for an alcoholic crim named Tom Chaney (Josh Brolin) who needlessly shot and killed her daddy over a minor dispute. She recruits drunken Cogburn (a particularly mumbly, but still engaging Jeff Bridges) to help her track him down. He’s reluctant, but intrigued by the prospect of claiming the bounty on Chaney’s head (and the subsequent whisky that bounty could buy). Rooster breaks an early promise to Mattie by heading off without her, and instead with a Texas Ranger named LaBeouf (Matt Damon) also hot on Chaney’s trail. Mattie tracks them down, and seeks to prove that she has the necessary gumption to find, and ultimately kill, her father’s murderer.

But let’s look at this from the perspective of Chaney, who is absent for much of the film. A drunk and an unrepentant criminal for sure, but all he wanted was a bit of cash to play cards and score some booze. In a state of inebriation, he carelessly murders Ross Sr. That action sets him on ‘The Coen Path’; a path down which he will be relentlessly pursued and made to pay for his sins, like other money-hungry Coen characters before him (see: Blood Simple, Fargo, Miller's Crossing, The Big Lebowski, The Man Who Wasn’t There, Intolerable Cruelty, The Ladykillers, No Country for Old Men, Burn After Reading, A Serious Man). No one escapes the wrath of Joel and Ethan Coen. I’m surprised one hasn’t offed the other in a state of frenzied fratricide after some sort of romantic or financial misunderstanding.

Despite the oft-repeated Biblical overtones of vengeance and righteousness, True Grit is nowhere near as personal as their previous film, A Serious Man, which fully delved into the brothers’ Judaism and their sense of place in the world. True Grit also avoids the sense of nihilistic chaos of the Wild West that pervaded their previous foray into the western genre, No Country for Old Men. Although it slides perfectly into their oeuvre, and restates many of their themes, True Grit is a far simpler and straighter film than anything the duo have done before. Only filmmakers with as impressive a back catalogue and supreme a talent as the Coen brothers could relax and produce a film as “simple and straight” as True Grit and have it still be a thrilling, haunting, hilarious, minor-masterpiece.

4.5/5

A lot of stilted un-natural script, sounded odd. Maybe intended for effect. Top grade acting and storyline, up to near the end, when there appeared to be a short cut put in to end the film at a certain time limit. Certainly a movie worth viewing.

Another excellent film by the Coen bros. It has snappy and witty dialogue and the acting is top class. The story falls a bit flat at the end but it doesn't really take anything away from an all-round terrific movie.

Loved this. Another great Coen brothers flick. The scenery was amazing and Jeff Bridges is fantastic as the battle weary Marshall. I think it could have been slightly longer and given the main scenes more time to play out.

I love this movie! I saw it at the cinema and again recently on DVD. It has the whole package - excellent character acting (though sub-titles for Jeff Bridges would have been useful!), beautiful wild west scenery, captivating screenplay with plenty of humour, drama and tension. I think young Hailee Steinfeld is amazing and perfectly cast, she is a truly feisty young lady with as much 'true grit' as some of the other tough characters. The cast of bad guys is superb, they are menacing and quite frightful to look at. This is one movie I could watch repeatedly.

A young teenager Mattie Ross (Hailee Steinfeld) is very determined to capture Tom Chaney (Josh Brolin) a hired hand who shot her father in cold blood. To aid her, she hires a trigger-happy and drunken US Marshal, Rooster Cogburn (Jeff Bridges). Against his wishes, she joins him in his trek into Indian territories to search for Chaney. They are joined by a Texas Ranger LaBoeuf (Matt Damon), who wants Chaney for another reason. Chaney is finally caught and killed. During the shooting, Mattie falls into a cave, is bitten by a snake and saved by Cogburn but loses her left arm. Almost 20 years later, Mattie who never married goes in search of Cogburn and LaBoeuf to meet and thank them for their past endeavour. The DVD is in excellent colour, the acting by no-nonsense Steinfeld and amiable Bridges brilliant. In the film, he speaks with a heavy accent which adds to the character he depicts. I saw glimpses of the previous film True Grit with John Wayne as the US Marshal. Personally, Bridges surpasses Wayne in characterising the trigger-happy drunken US Marshal. The special segment Features on the DVD is very interesting, with the film producer, director, designer and cast making commentaries.

By no means is True Grit one of the greatest westerns ever or even one of the Coen brothers' greatest films, but this little throwback to a genre that has had its day is certainly an admirable one. Again, not up to the standard of some Western classics, but certainly indicates enough that Hollywood needs to make more movies like this.

Not a big fan of western however I like quite a lot Cohen's work. The acting and directing are superbe, the storyline is quite simple. Some of the actors I usually don't enjoy are in this incredibly good. The Cohen's brothers have done an excellent job of what could have been a very cliche, boring plot. You will wonder why you are keeping watching a story so unoriginal and that's what makes the difference between great directing and poor one.

Young Hailee Seinfeld as Mattie Ross is outstanding, seeking to bring the killer of her father to justice. Jeff Bridges as the US Marshal Rooster Cogburn is equally as good. Matt Damon as a Texas Ranger does a good supporting role. Highly recommend for superb acting.

I can't rate this movie highly enough. The Cohen Bros crafted this movie so carefully and with great detail to every detail, it is stunning. It grounds a lot of silly unrealistic stuff you see in westerns and creates a reality you can believe. The acting is spot on the mark, and the characters feel like they are from that period.

Apart from the fact that Jeff Bridges needs subtitles in order to hear anything he says this movie is wonderful. A wide wandering epic about a young girl hell bent on revenge. Hailee Steinfeld is amazing as the young headstrong Mattie Ross while Matt Damon is surprisingly funny, as is a lot of True Grit. Hidden comic gems are everywhere but then so is an underlying dread. This is a balance that The Coen Brothers strike time and time again. The sobering end of True Grit defines this. A must see movie.

I found the best parts of the picture was when the little girl was telling people off, bargaining and getting her own way, and the vast range of the vocabulary she used. Very humorous! Matt Damon's character didn't get much development and he could not pull of a texan accent. Jeff Bridges always plays these drunken roles well, but it felt a little disjointed when it jumped to the end 20 years later.

What a disappointment! I finally got to see it on DVD after remembering how well it was reviewed when it first came out as a cinema release. But I'm of a generation that remembers the original make with John Wayne starring as Rooster Cogburn. The original was inspiring and one worth seeing over again. It always makes me wonder why filmmakers go to all the millions and trouble to remake a movie that is already a cinema classic. If they get it right the first time, why do it? The only movie I can remember, in recent history, that actually pulled that off was the Roald Dahl story of Charlie and the Chocolate factory - though I will add the original version with Gene Wilder remains my favourite. Rooster Cogburn, well! The director here goes to lengths, rather boringly so, to make this man out to be such a hard case. The court scene was overblown, unsubtle as a sledge hammer and guaranteed to have the audience thoroughly sorted so there's no confusion at all about the personality of this character - and that applied to every other character in the movie. The justice doled out to Tom Chaney was like "oh, big deal" - all that effort just for an anticlimax. But what was the most unsettling was the final scene of the middle aged Mattie Ross. A hard piece of souless wood and like the last spike nailed into a coffin. I found this scene particularly arrogant of the filmmakers. I'm so over Spielberg, the producer of this movie, he always tries too hard. The whole thing left me with nothing but thinking that I merely endured it. It spent its time showcasing the so-cool of these characters without giving anything inspiring to the audience. Yes, it tries too hard to impress.

A surprisingly simple and honest story of a girl seeking blood revenge on the man who killed her father. I went in expecting gun-slinging cowboy caricatures distracting from a plot-less bore of a film, and instead found myself immersed in a captivating plot with complex characters, and a refreshingly understated view of bounty hunting and adventure. Even the few show downs are keep as honest and modest, and the impact is far greater. Full of suspense, excitement, and some deeply sombre moments, True Grit raises far above my expectations and stands alone as the best genre movie I've seen, possibly ever.

I really feel like I should have enjoyed this movie more. There were really good things about it - the actors were great - apart from initially really struggling to understand a word Jeff Bridges was saying; I thought the idea of the story was good, but it just seemed to be missing something and left me feeling really flat and dissatisfied. The movie also initially had quite a sense of humor about it and then later just became totally depressing and of a completely different character - I've tried reading into this to see if the writers/director were trying to make a point but I realised that I actually really don't care enough to analyse it. I wouldn't watch it again although I'm sure there are plenty of people who would really love it - I"m just not one of them!

A good story line & acting performances, A little slow at times but still worth a look. If you like Wyatt Earp or Clint Eastwood westerns then this one is for you.

No doubt a good movie, with some top notch acting. Worthy of 3.5 stars, but just lacked that something special to push it into 4 or 5 star territory.

Was a good enjoyable old fashion western movie, also had trouble with jeff bridges accent and mumbling, movie had a bit of humour which made it light and enjoyable, only wished there was a tad more action and more typical western shoot outs.

Brilliant movie, Jeff Bridges stars as ever! Hailee Steinfeld is a star in the making! I could watch it over and over.

I am a Cohen Bros fan, so am biased. Just love the quirk of each character, that is what the Cohen Bros do best. Loved Jeff Bridges character, and that of the little girl. A lot more fun than I was expecting.

A enjoyable movie and the girl was fabulous. What brought down the rating for me was that I could only understand half of what Jeff Bridges was saying because of his mumbling. That was the type of character he was playing but disappointing. Mind you, it didn't seem to affect understanding the movie.

Not a film I would give 3 1/2 stars. Couldn't understand what the girl was saying many times.

A good film, but lacking a Coen brothers twist. Not different enough from the original to warrant a remake, although it does seem a bit more authentic.

A story about a 14 year old girl's determination to capture her father's murderer. True grit is really about this adorable and feisty girl. The ending has a little more grit than expected but nonetheless a enjoyable film.

I expected a much grittier movie - this was like a Disney movie with a bit of gun shooting in it. Would recommend to teenage girls for inspiration and they may find this edgy - but not for adults who want an edgy movie.

like the reviews mention before this is a outstanding coen borthers film. The only disappointment was the ending the forward segment 25 years on torn down everthing you fall in love with, with the 14yo character

A great movie. Saw the original with John Wayne years ago, this one is better (unlike most remakes which a usually c**p). Well worth the viewing time. Expected Coen high standard.

Welcome back to the Western. Grittier than the original movie it still follows the original screenplay and the memorable quotes of '...One eyed fat man' and 'fill your hands..' are still there. It is still an entertaining 106 minutes of entertainment with the actress playing the young Mattie Ross doing a fine job. Jeff Bridges and Mat Damon are good in support.

A straightforward story, with enough twists to keep it interesting. But it would be nothing without the feisty, determined and gritty girl at the centre of the story. The Special Features show the remarkable efforts that went into the costumes and location designs, done so well they go unnoticed in the movie.

simply put a modern western done the old fashioned way. all the elements are there, with fanasitc actors and storyline. Hailee deserves all the attention she received, her role makes the movie. more violence shown than in the older type westerns but in keeping with storyline.31/2 stars simply as not really into western movies but after all the reports on this one, worth a look.
