Ben Stiller is not known for being a great director. It's a shame really, as his previous efforts (Reality Bites, The Cable Guy and Zoolander) were all very good, albeit misunderstood films. For a while it seemed Tropic Thunder would fall into the same trap, as it was shrouded in controversy in the months preceding its release. Everyone knew it would be a success - but could a war-movie spoof that features a character in black-face and jokes about acting 'full-retard' actually be any good? Yes, actually. In fact, it's the comedy of the year. Tropic Thunder tells the true story (go with me here) about the actors who went into the heart of Vietnam to film the greatest war movie of all time.

Tugg Speedman (Stiller) is the dim-witted action star, who has been desperately seeking Oscar as a means of resurrecting his flailing career. His performance in 'Simple Jack' didn't quite pan out, so maybe this will be his big chance. That is, if he doesn't get out-overacted by Kirk Lazarus (Downey Jr), an acclaimed Australian actor who has dyed his skin black to play the resident African-American soldier.

Also attached to the film is heroin-addicted comedian Jeff Portnoy (Black), hip-hop star Alpa Chino (Jackson) and the green rookie Jeff Sandusky (Baruchel). Of course, the weather is hot, the ego-trips are massive, and the music-video director Damien (Steve Coogan) is out of his league. Studio head Les Grossman is threatening to shut down production, unless they can figure out something ... and quick.

Damien, crazed screen-writer Four Leaf (Nolte) and explosives expert Cody (McBride) decide to drop the prima-donna actors deep in the jungle, and film the rest of the movie guerrilla-style. Unfortunately, they are not alone in the jungle, and the actors are soon facing off against a gang protecting their drug trade. Not that the actors realise this straight away. They just believe it’s an elaborate set-up by the director. Let's just say, they're not the brightest group of 'soliders'.

Tropic Thunder is probably the best war-movie spoof of all time, playing around with all those clichés and conventions we've seen a million times before. Here though, they are actually exciting and entertaining. To be honest, the opening scene (straight from the movie within a movie) actually looks like a pretty decent war film, despite the laughable acting. Check out Jack Black's accent during that scene. Where is that dude supposed to be from?

Robert Downey Jr's internet fandom has become semi-messianic in the months since appearing as Iron Man. Fair enough really. He once again steals the show as the method actor who can barely distinguish fantasy from reality. Lazarus' portrayal of Lincoln Osiris does descend to minstrelsy, Martin Lawrence-esque mugging as the shoot goes on. However, by having Alpa Chino there to keep Osiris in check, the film does not cross the line it tightrope walks on. It's a tricky role, but I think it will become one of the classic comic performances, alongside Peter Sellers in The Party and Sacha Baron Cohen in Borat.

Ben Stiller is also great as Tugg Speedman, playing against his usual awkward-romancer and harking back to his days of absurd characterisation on the classic Ben Stiller Show. As I suspected, his portrayal of Simple Jack is wonderfully offensive, and certainly nothing to complain about. Tropic Thunder is one of the best and bravest mainstream satires I've seen in recent years. I never thought I would have seen this kind of subversive comedy in a tent-pole blockbuster release, but here we are. This film hits its targets head-on, and should take every over-serious actor down a few notches. Sean Penn is specifically called out for his performance in I Am Sam. I don't personally know him, but he doesn't seem like the kind of guy who can take a joke.

I don't want all this talk of satire and subversiveness to take away from what really made the film great. It was hilarious. Even before the movie begins, we are treated to brilliant fake trailers starring Speedman, Lazarus and Portnoy. It's rare for a film to start with its audience already in tears from laughing. The ensemble cast is so perfect, and there is a lot of chemistry between everyone involved. Even the smallest parts are cast with brilliant comic actors like Bill Hader, and the surprise celebrity cameos are so great I won't spoil them for you, even though I'm dying to.

Tropic Thunder is one of the most enjoyable experiences I've had at the cinema this year. To watch this movie in a packed theater is a treat, as you get to hear the collective gasps and cheers throughout. You might even find yourself joining in. Even the biggest sourpuss should walk out feeling as though they've gotten their money's worth. Tropic Thunder is so funny, so exciting and so clever that it literally makes you breathless throughout the experience. The picture manages to be the most enjoyable film of the year. In second place - Iron Man. God bless you Robert Downey Jr. As for Ben Stiller - I never thought I'd say this - he's a great director.

5/5

Had very high hopes for this movie but within 10 mins I found myself reading a book with this on in the background. Not funny at all, very hard to understand some of the dialogue, and too much swearing just for the sake of swearing. Avoid at all costs.

I just found this very boring. The "serious" sub-plot, which was supposed to support all the comedy, just wasn't real enough. That just made the comedy aspects fall really flat. Starting to wonder why I like Ben Stiller a bit after this one - he's always the same! My wife fell asleep after a while - I wish I did too.

After viewing this "movie", it is quite puzzling how it ever got an OSCAR. One would have to visualize money changing hands behind closed doors for an OSCAR to be awarded here. Ben Stiller is wasted in this movie, he is funny usually but in this movie, he is a loss. Tom Cruise found his true vocation in life here. One can suspect that they made the "plot" up as they went along. Americans simply cannot make funny movies. They need to learn from the British who are masters at it. Seriously folks, it's a WOFTAM: Waste of time and money.

You can read the story reviews here but they don't tell you just how clever this movie is. Robert D deserves an oscar for this. Funny! It's a one of a kind movie, I think, a genre on it's own. If you like Ben Stiller (and normally I don't ) you've probably seen it. If not, watch it and you'll be smiling five mins into the movie.

I thought i would wait for this one on DVD and am bitterly disappointed i did not see it at the cinema. Quite intelligent in its way and as funny as all get out. It is great that Stiller now has the Hollywood power to make films the way he wants to. Jack Black is a disappointing weak link in the film. I am hoping that the 'machine' has realized he is a limited actor and lets him stay in his own genre (which is primarily for him not to share the screen). Cred to Jay Baruchel for skillfully holding his own as the straight man among so much comedy. One to own.

Like a beautiful girl who loves herself this should be nice to look at. Full of what I can only guess are private jokes it's like being stuck with a group of friends reminiscing about some event you didn't go to. Oh you'll laugh at some bits and painfully smile through others. It's a testament to these guys that the laughter out ways the feeling of being a third wheel.

No, not politically correct...but who cares ? It was funny and the performances were great. Robert Downey Jnr is one of the most talented actors out there and this is a clear example of this. Tom Cruise is wonderful too - like you have never seen him before (does Scientology allow them to swear this much !?!) The premise for the film is a classic. It is very satirical and tongue-in-cheek regarding the industry in which these actors work. You can't compare this to Zoolander...it's a totally different kettle of fish....

A send up of an Oliver Stone movie is. by simple definition, a tautology. But this is fairly original, far more so than Stone's, um, original, which was a ripoff of FF Copolla's ripoff of Joseph Conrad's blah blah blah. Almost as silly as an Oliver Stone movie, but far more entertaining.

The opening shorts are a scream - totally out of left field - but the rest is only ok. Some good laughs but not sustained. Tom Cruise and Robert Downery Jr awesome but Ben Stiller is not up to what he CAN do (Zoolander, Meet the Parents/Fockers) And it might just be me but I looked down after the shorts and then we were in the jungle next time I looked up. No 'backgrounding' of story and why the characters would even be in this film. Not a complete waste of time but don't get your hopes up.

I agree with most of the member's views. For some reason Stiller like his crude movie "Dodgeball" feels the need to spoil a comedy with filthy crude comments ( eg jack black when tied to the tree ) With the talent of Stiller Downey,Cruise, Nolte etc this film could have been excellent, there should be no need rely on filth unless they are only appealling to the younger generation, & rubbish hip hopmarket. The special effects and cinematograph were excellent. This 'spoof'' movie with a little tigher script & a bit more thought should have been much better,Stiller made so much effort for little reward in the end. Not recommended unles you are a 'no brain' teenager.

Although the rating does mention strong violence, it should be noted that is a gross understatement. This film is hard core gore. Tasteless and discusting in most cases. It starts off as "it's just fake movie gore" but moves into a new depth of disgusting when Ben Stiller licks the contents of a human head that are oozing out of the severed neck... - which is meant to be a real head, not part of their movie making venture... Anyone who finds that sort of thing tasteful or funny may enjoy this film. They may also enjoy banging their own head with a hammer.

I thought this one would be great. I had several attempts to try ad complete it. This movie is truly a waste of time - for fans of Ben Stiller, Jack Black, Tom Cruise, Nick Nolte, Matthew McConoghy - it is hideous and cringe worthy. I am generally not picky but I'm dumping this one from my list. It wouldn't even make a good coffee coaster.

Entertaining comedy with brilliant performance by Robert Downey Jnr. As much as I hate Tom Cruise he turns in a good performance as well in a supporting role, but it's Downey Jnr. who steals the show and stands out.

I was a little disappointed (always comparing Stiller's efforts to 'Zoolander'), but all in all it is a funny, slightly offensive and entertaining romp. My boyfriend loved it.

Not really funny at all, not like the promos on TV some months back. Was slow and boring at first but became okay in the 2nd half. Don't get this movie!
