the worst movie I've ever watched sorry
Loved this wonderful movie, but yes, some flaws to do with being able to follow the storyline and also that whispering. It gave me understanding of a child's viewpoint.
What a weird movie. After 45mins we gave up - it was just too weird.
This was an interesting movie but too long and much of it unnecessary. I fast forwarded through a lot of it, but in the end I was glad to have stuck with it.
For 27 minutes of this movie I felt like I was watching the discovery channel and I hate the discovery channel.
awful - no way in the world I could last for 2.5 hours !!!
This was more enjoyable to watch when flicking through the creation scenes and sticking to the characters the first time. Watching the Extras was most enlightening and definitely made it all make more sense. The boys in this are fantastic (again, see the extras), but Brad Pitt is truly superb. And the sets are incredibly real 50's small town America. There is no doubt this is a work of art, and specifically impressionist art. So if you don't like the blurriness of a Monet, then this is not for you.
All-time favourite movie. Abstract, packed with symbolism - everything about this movie is deliberate, well thought out., rich and beautiful. Mallick spent 20 years pulling it together, I've heard. It is about a collection of ordinary people looking for the role of God in the world, and the reflection of God in their families and in nature. It is truthful, intelligent, humble and reverent. It doesn't shy away from difficult issues. Mallick who clearly had something more to say than just 'here's an hour's entertainment'.
the most strange story ever, expected much much more, especially with Brad Pitt staring in it,
This could quite possibly be the worst movie I have ever seen. The acting was non existent due to the director doing what they wanted. I feel sorry for the stars having to work in an enviroment like this. The little we saw of th story was so disjointed I couldn't wait for it to finish . I still am not sure what it was about.
A beautifully constructed, ambitious work of cinematic art - not a conventional Hollywood narrative. Not easy to follow or to get what the hell it is about, I got bored at times, frustrated at others, didn't really get the whole thing - but I have to give credit for the intention, vision, beauty, production, and will to push the boundaries of the form while still offering some story and message. Brad Pitt is the only character with substantial dialogue, and he does a great job as a conflicted 1950s father. Extended dawn of time sequence is highly reminiscent of Kubrick's 2001 trip sequence and although exquisitely done is too long. The final sequence in the movie I found indulgent and at odds with the scientific universe presented earlier. Music extremely good throughout. This has elements of greatness but fails to fully deliver, hence three stars.
A father exercises tough love on his children while the mother exudes grace. A movie that tries to represent in microcosm what is happening in the grand scheme of things. Visually the film is striking, particularly the creation of life scenes, but overall the juxtaposing of the two doesn’t quite work. Tarkovsky did it a lot better in The Mirror. 3.5 stars
Too bizarre for me too. I stopped it after 25 mins when CGI dinosaurs appeared! Brad Pitt and Sean Penn appear briefly then orchestral music, beautiful galaxies and then CGI dinosaurs. WTF!!!
I was disappointed at the other reviews I read. Any viewer must understand what the thread actually is meant to tell us. I was amazed at this movie in it's story line which was about family struggles over death and life and our search for God in family tragedy and it was written as a mystery novel which was unfolding in flashbacks and forward. It was long and drawn out, and the sections on the size and wonder of our universe was trying to show how big God was.
Perserved through the first part but didnt come together for me. great actors, didnt get the story
I just couldn't watch it - made no sense at al.
Quite simply this movie is bizarre. It was like bad poetry with a religious overtone set to pictures that appear to have no relation to anything. If i could give it no stars i would have..on the plus side i am sure the movie would make sense to you if you were stoned..
Weird indeed, and with a whole section or two that could well have been omitted, in my view. But the slowness gets you after a while, and then you are in. It's pretty confusing even at the end, but there are some powerful sad sections in there that really hurt. Family life does not look its best here.
Awful story! There was no dialog, and it was as creepy as sin.
Gorgeous visuals but too abstract for me. I persevered to the end to see if it eventually came together. It didn't.
Ok... so this was either the worst movie I have ever seen, or the best movie I've ever seen. The scenes shifted strangely and I began wondering whether the synopsis reflected the film at all. Like the dinosaurs? Hang on, I don't remember reading that! I felt like it could have been--- well --- different. Better? The whispering was throughout the whole film, so I switched on the subtitles, but I did miss most of what was said. Yet, I am not sure the words mean all that much in the scheme of things. The film is very evocative with the imagery, and certainly contains existential themes here... but it just seemed so detached and lacking congruence for me. The cinematography was beautiful, which earned this film an extra star. I was somewhat let down though- no what I expected. So *sigh* 2 stars.
Seriously?? Whilst I found the film strangely compelling, I was mystified by it all - I read the synopsis prior to viewing but it just didn't come together for me, and the ending was just so abrupt - glad it was over though. Yes, the film is waaaay long, beautiful cinematography, extremely hard to follow and really hated the whispering of the actors as I missed most of it, just plain weird. Not sure who I would recommend it to.
Beautifully filmed, well acted but pretentious, boring, depressing - I could go on! Perhaps you do have to be in the right mood to watch this one but it did absolutely nothing for me. Way, way, way too long for a start.
Have to say this was the worst movie I have ever watched! I like so many people wish I could get those hours back!!!
We only lasted 5 minutes- what a waste of time! Negative rating should apply!!
There are lots of negative reviews here. My only regret is that I did not heed them prior to adding it to my list. We only got as far as the 20 minute mark; concluding that the remaining 130 (!) minutes were not worth the effort. This is pseudo-intellectual, self-indulgent indie cinema at its absolute worst.
Would like to give this negative 5 stars if possible, 15mins of ear straining for nothing. What a crock!
National geography meets the Waltons. lol what more can I say > Night John boy !!! Yawns..
it would be more fun watching grass grow under six foot of snow,it would have to be the biggest waste of money i have ever seen
Not what I expected, too slow and hard to follow, not recommended for family entertainment, more for those who like weird arty type films.
It's never clear what this is all about; maybe some weird religious experience. At least at the start and end. In between is a very ordinary story of some kids growing up, doing very ordinary kid-things in a simpler time, the 1950s, when kids made their own fun. And nothing much happens, despite the music continually suggesting something was about to. The father is a tyrant and the mother hardly speaks. Throughout the film are mumbled voice-overs, impossible to understand.
Mesmerising images, scenes that seem to be lighting up the very tip of huge themes, but then not quite pulling it together. What was it about? Maybe it needs to be watched twice. Still, worth it just for the cinematography.
Seriously?! Rented this film due to multiple positive reviews. This film splits viewers into those who love it and those who don't, I lasted 40 minutes before turning off, I don't!
The very good acting couldn't recover a very boring/ strange plot
This dvd was sent to me altho I did not order it. I managed to watch it all, but it was hard going. The special effects were quite spectacular - but I thought I watching an outtake of 2001 Space Odyssey (maybe a Pink Floyd soundtrack would have helped). Sorry, but I could not make much sense of it
wtf - was it just me? - passsssssssssssss
This is an awful movie... Don't watch it... I managed 20 minutes and that was difficult.
Warning!! Warning!!! Don't bother getting this movie - It is the biggest load of codswallop I have ever seen. Couldn't even sit through it. I give it a MINUS 5 stars.
How can I express how bad this film was? The directors, producers and actors on this film seriously need to take a look at themselves. What were they thinking? Oh that's it! They were not thinking. This was the worst film ever. Don't waste your hard earned cash on this rubbish. Absolutely no entertainment value whatsoever. There was some nice scenery but I had to fast forward the movie just to get through it ... *yawn*
What an extremely odd film. You almost have to watch it twice to get what its about - but I couldn't sit through it once let alone twice. Reminded me of Vanilla Sky and although some of the scenes were beautiful, its too weird to enjoy.
Brad and Sean get stoned and decide to make a movie.......this bites the big one!
A mid 20th century mid-America version of "A Space Odyssey", probably best appreciated while on recreational drugs. Otherwise the story lacked a real narrative and seems utterly self indulgent. I can't believe I watched the whole thing waiting for it to coalesce and be meaningful, which it never did..pity
Far less of the God imagery would have improved the plot. As it is, it is far too slow and convoluted for my liking.
You could watch this film with the sound off and understand it just as well as someone who watched it with the sound on. It reminded me a bit of planet earth, except with no point.
I think it's the sort of movie that arts students and movie directors would love, but I didn't get it at all and turned it off after 30mins.
Did not get this movie. Was I supposed to be enlighted? Was I supposed to embrace it with abandoment. Religiously or other? What I do know is that it was long, so very long.
I didn't really get into this movie at all. Probably the worst film I have seen in a long time. Certainly wasn't feel good.
Really slow film. So deep i was drowning. I couldn't watch it to end. I could never bring myself to watch this film again.
worst movie I've ever attempted to watch - didnt even last 10 minutes into it
Dont bother. AS with other reviews we had to switch off. Director would have to be on drugs to make any sense of this mish mash. A very good lesson in why one should read members reviews.
Oh dear - wish I'd read these reviews BEFORE I added to my queue!! It takes a lot for me to switch a movie off, but I couldn't even last 30 mins with one. It was so abstract, and dull it was ridiculous. Waste of time I would say.
worst movie could not watch it turned it off at 20 min away
What the hell, Brad Pitt's worst movie by far...... turned it off after suffering for almost 30 mins DO NOT WATCH
Probably made to win cinematic awards for imagery but not so good for telling a story.... -what has the creation of the world (wth the finest of music) to do with raising children?
Very very slow film without a clear message. A waste of time!
As A movie it did not get a clear message across. The fate of Jack was in no way inspiring and hoopes were not even partially fulfilled . The sets were fantastic ( so much so that they distrated from the theme). The fractals (if thats what the they were ) did not always fit the moods. Nobody in the film really dealt with their problems. Certainly different but did not quite make the most of the potential. The actors were themselves and not the characters.
What an amazingly beautiful and moving film. I absolutely loved it. If you only like mainstream box office Hollywood entertainment you probably won't enjoy it. This movie is something completely different and takes you an a journey of visual poetry. It speaks to you in many scenes without words and explores the difficult questions in life and the meaning of human existence. You need to sit back and open your mind when you watch this. A true master piece.
Movie was boring and way too long (150 mins), e.g. dinosaur section could have edited out. Great cinematography though, with beautiful scenery and tree themes throughout and although I understand what it was trying to achieve, the storyline needed more depth and action to keep the audience interested. Even Brad Pitt and the good acting from the kids couldn't make this movie any more watchable.
This was the VERY WORST movie ever, hated it DO NOT WATCH
Dont bother. What a waste of time. I switched it off ten minutes into the movie.
Tree of life is very slow and gloomy
Most of the narrative in Tree of Life happens off-screen. What's left is a movie where you see the evolution of a life (and metaphorically ALL life) in some very finely observed character study. Parts of the film are very abstract. Cinematography is amazing.
Does it work? Kind of. If you enjoy poetic films such as Tarkovsky's Stalker or Solaris, you may get something out of it. If not, then it's likely you won't see the point. Even loving art-film as I do, I found the final phase somewhat ham-fisted for such an ambitious film. I'd rate this 5 stars as an art-film, but only 2 stars as an effective movie. It's just too relentlessly existential to be entertaining. Thought provoking? Perhaps. Awe inspiring at times, but not fun.
if there was a message to be had in this title i not only 'missed it completely', i missed the whole book the message was in, moreover , i missed the whole library the book was in, but most probably missed the entire town the library was in............... so if america was like this 'in the 50's'................ no wonder the 21st century (today) is totally screwed up!!!! RIGHT it all started way back then................. with ATTITUDE PLUS
BORING!!!!!!!!! Only good if you want to sleep.
One for the film buffs. If you have a knowledge of film history you'll get more out of it. Over all it does add up to a story but you just have to let it happen. In the end you understood what it was about but it took a long time getting there. A bit like 2001. The cinematography is so beautiful it takes your breath away.
What were they thinking? Were they thinking or was someone seriously stoned. Glad I didn't pay cinema price!
Well worth the effort and the child actors are very good
Blatantly the Reviews speak for themselves. I persisted 40 mins in, I saw a few big stars and I don't understand why they would put their name to it unless it was all done in post production... I kind of got where they were going with it ... through an innocents eyes .. but seriously It was soo boring that I turned it off because it was making me sleepy. 18 mins on the big bang and evolution through cinematography ... YAWN! Is it bad to say I fast forwarded through it ??!!
Movie is bearable if you fast-forward through a few sections. Brilliant pics and scenery shots but goes a bit too long. 150 mins can be condensed into 80 mins quite easily. ..
Worst movie I have seen in years. Director obviously self absorbed.
Before watching this movie I did understand what I was about to see. For the first forty five minutes I was patient, my patience continued until at one point I was clearly frustrated the path this movie had taken. Patience continued, then I felt depressed with this movie and when it ended it felt like the pain was over. This movie was made in self absorption, no respect for the viewer and whilst the cinematography was incredible my one wish is that I could have edited this myself and made a much better movie.
Absolutely hated it! It was so bad we couldn't even watch the whole thing. Watched the first 20 minutes, waiting for it to get good. Skipped through the rest waiting for the movie to get started. Really, really, really bad!
One of the worst movies I have seen. It was so boring only managed to watch 45 minutes of it and then decided it was a total waste of time!
Amazing photography. Obviously written by a troubled mind. Still don't quite know what it was all about but spectacular footage all the same. May be if I had an altered state of consciousness it would have been easier to follow. Watch it for the pictures and not the story and you'll be OK.
I fell asleep...the images where great!
But the film wasn't
The synopsis was nothing like what the first half hour was about
i have no idea of what this film was about that i couldnt watch it.
It didnt seem to have a story line that could be followed
I would not recommend this to anyone
weirdest movie i have seen. Didn't even finish watching
It was all a bit of a mystery. Too much of the movie spent on special effects that were meaningless.
Watched 15mins and turned it off!
what a load of old tosh, dreary, pointless.... I always! watch a film to the end whatever but this one beat me -5
30 mins in and nothing happened so I pulled the rip cord. Returned without finishing. This might be great for art/film students to analyse.
Wish I'd read the reviews before I hired. Certainly not one I would admit to ever seeing.
What a waste of time for Brad Pitt - what was he thinking. The story was OK but all the imagery I just didnt get.
This film is a masterpiece lovingly crafted by the greatest director of our generation. It is a film for the heart, not the mind. It is non linear, poetic, exquisitely beautiful to watch, and captures the mysteries of living of a world beyond our understanding. Heaven and earth, micro and macro, grace and nature, the loss of innocence and the field of love that is our family.
It’s a polarising film, just look at these reviews. If you’re looking for linear narrative and Hollywood go elsewhere, yet if you are open to experience what this film offers, your life may be changed. It is a beautiful rapturous film. Check out the rest of Mallicks films and you understand, that this man translates the eye of spirit into extraordinary cinema. No wonder all the best actors fall over themselves to work with this humble brilliant man.
If I could have given this 0, I would have.
A stupid disjointed film. I didn't finish watching it as I wasn't enjoying it.
I couldn't watch it all! It was so boring, long and drawn out
I told my husband "I don't get it". He said "there's nothing to get".......and he's right.
looked like a very long and boring TV commercial, not even art house worthy. Don't bother wasting your time!!!!!!
This is a wonderful change from the usual pap formula stories of so many US films and it contains many visual delights, but unfortunately the obscure style of story telling eventually left me flat. I loved Terence Mallick's "The Thin Red Line" but with this one I think he was trying to out-do Kubrick. Kubrick played extraordinary visual tricks but he almost always did so within the parameters of a strong story. I was expecting so much of "The Tree Of Life" but it was a major let down.
Very tedious, Not sure what the point or purpose of this film was. It seemed to overreach and as a result achieve nothing. Good visuals were it's only redeeming feature. I also liked the dinosaur but am still asking myself why.
Holy Smoke - i have never had to fast forwrd a movie up to an hour - than gave up anyway and ejected- ruined our movie date night...dont plan date night with this dvd...humbug..not rated
lovely images - bad movie
beautiful and touching film. Must be prepared to relax and enjoy the parts that are almost like an interlude. I felt they gave you time to digest what was going on and made the film more poignant.
The worst movie I've ever seen, no story just weird images. I watched it in fast forward to see what happened - still now answers. Super weird!!
watched 30 minutes and could not believe pit and penn would be in such an absolute mockery of a film.
please do not pick this movie minus 5 stars for this one
Wonderful. Beautiful. Had me in tears in some places, in others I almost got lost in my own review of life. Read the review by Simon above. WARNING: Do not watch this movie if you are feeling impatient or wanting action. Do not watch this movie if you are expecting an entertaining story. This movie needs the viewer to be relaxed and calm with no interruptions. Then it becomes an experience.
BORING!!!!! Don't watch it. Worst film I have ever seen.
The term "Emperor's New Clothes" comes to mind ... marvelous if you know or care what's going on .... close to a random sequence .. unwatchable.
After we saw this film, we looked up other reviews. One chap said if he what he said would prevent just one person from bothering to see this (self-indulgent) film, it would be worth bothering to review it. We Agree! Awful. Boring. (and by a director we thought we admired)
Well for all my hard work at school getting top marks, etc. I must be either extremely stupid! I have NO idea what this movie was about!?
Definitely avoid, unless you enjoy incongruent, pretentious, meandering expositions. "Aficionados" will proclaim this work as ambitious, layered, multi-thematic, sweeping, existential ... but in reality, it's just a poorly constructed, condescending excuse for cinema. It's just an opportunity for the ostentatious arty-types to point out how shallow the rest of us are for not appreciating the intellectual scope of this movie. Plain and simple, it's just a stinker.
too boring, didn't finish watching it
Impossibly slow to sit through with pointless arty farty visual sequences, total rubbish. The sound mixer/editor needs a kick in the pants as we had the movie at full volume just to try and hear the mostly inaudible whispered sequences and therefore the music was deafening. A lot of the 'normal' dialogue was inaudible as well. Pretensious and complete rubbish. If at the movies would have left and asked for a refund.
I guess the great thing about being a director as revered as Malick is that the studios allow you to be as self-indulgent as you like. Or perhaps that's the worst thing about being Terrence Malick. Self-indulgence is certainly worst thing about The Tree Of Life. Visually stunning? Yes. Intensely personal? Yes? Thought-provoking? Well, occasionally. Pretentious and needlessly long-winded? Oh yes indeedy.
A great performance from Brad Pitt and some lovely cinematography can't overcome the fact that The Tree of Life is a dull, repetitive film that tries to disguise a lack of clarity as intellectual depth.
Not my kind of film. Boring. Too preachy.
I just saw it. Short version, I didn't like it.
I think it could have been a great story about the relationship between a man and his son, but in order to be that it would have to lose: the Hubble Telescope scenes; the National Geographic scenes; the Walking with Dinosaur scenes; the beach scene at the end; any of the Sean Penn scenes; any scene that involved choral singing. I don't think I've ever been so bored and frustrated by a film before; I also don't think I've ever seen so many walk-outs during a film before, either - I reckon we lost about 20% of the audience, most of them just after we got to the dinosaur scenes. To me it was a self-indulgent wank with far too much whispering.
I just didn't get it! It was all over the place and quite hard to follow. Not my cup of tea.
Too long, too slow, too arty! A waste of the quality actors. The story being told got a bit lost in the flashback dreamlike presentation used, the story was really a nightmare so needed a more aggressive approach. A big disappointment
It was the worst movie that I have ever watched. Even fast forwarding still painful to watch. Can I score less than zero?
This was absolute rubbish just arty trash wish i had that 2 hours of my life back!!!
I would have to say the worst movie I have ever seen. I only watched it out of curiosity, please don't waste your time.
Waste of my time and energy waiting for the movie to pick up! No, it doesn't get better so dont keep watching and hoping!
One of the worst movies I have ever seen - those who like this are having themselves on!! Does not even deserve one star.
One of best movie,s, very captivating. It help,s if you watch the special feature at the end of movie, it is then that i realized how remarkable this movie is , a masterpiece
Wow, this was the most esoteric cinematic experience of all time for me. These are just fancy words, I know. To put it simply, I was too dumb to appreciate the director's vision. It was plain confusing and boring, full stop. Best Picture Oscar nomination? What???
Is actually the worst film I've ever seen, even worse than some of the wierd 'arty' foreign speaking films I've seen. A complete waste of time and money.
Well that's over 2 hours of my life I'm never getting back.... Nominated for what exactly??
this has to be the worst movie I have seen and would not rrecommend it to anyone
hard to understand what it is all about
Dreadful. Waste of eyesight and why did they bother.
I DID NOT REQUEST THIS DVD, AND IT
I turned it off after 10 minutes - it was unbearably slow and could not see it improving. It was going to be a very long uninteresting movie. Thank goodness I didnt sit through anymore of it.
What an absolute waste of time. Maybe you need to be on drugs from the 60's?!? to appreciate this form of "art". We couldn't take it any longer and I almost sprained my thumb holding the fast forward button in! We have a great sound system etc and still had trouble deciphering the mumbling of Penn and co.....
A great example of someone with contacts....getting a chance to produce something that can be stated to be no more than self indulgent rubbish.....so much potential to explore other ways of seeing the world...but this was just randomly thrown together idea....what was with the dinosaurs making an appearance???!! No stars.......
Tree of boredom, more like. This is essentially a home movie with some cosmological twaddle about the history of the universe from a human perspective, thrown in to make it seem important.
I felt like watching a long winded way of showing a "stock image catalogue" - Every visual cliche under the sun. Maybe they had to as the story line is actually very simple and not all that original nor interesting. Well performed by all minus the visual masturbation. Zero *'s.
Beautiful cinematography but disjointed no story line that I could make out. No stars from me!
I've yet to see Brad Pitt in a decent movie....no idea what it was about!
We did not like it.
I wouldn't give it a star at all !
had no idea what was going on.
I'd love to see a montage of some of the previous reviewers' gaping faces as this film unfolds and they can't figure out what's going on: 'But Brad Pitt was so good in Ocean's Eleven - how did he get tricked into this?' Shock and awe as the origins of life are played out. 'I didn't want to watch a documentary! Where's the freaking story!' 'What's with all these dinosaurs?' 'This is boring. I'm giving this no stars!' Oh for goodness sake, people! Not everything has to follow a formula. Challenge yourselves.
A really moving portrayal of a family -life, love & lost. Beautiful arty cinematography but you must have a large screen tv to appreciate it. Especially emotional for any mother. But not for everyone.
A film that shows what cinema can be - no good for flogging popcorn or as a date movie for teens, but an amazing film for adults. Cinema as art and I found it satisfying in the way very few films ever achieve. The craft is flawless and the execution is bold. Recommended if you love art film and happy to try something different .
Yes, I would agree that this movie is a little bit strange... 30min or so at the start with just movie and little speech.... but once it got into the telling of the story, it was OK. Artsy yes. Surreal yes. I don't think I wasted my time, but I can see why some would see it that way!
A very artsy film... Not my style but quite well done.
Don't bother with this one. First 45 minutes is music and sky, hardly any dialogue and what little there is you can hardly make out.
The longest, boring, crazy movie Ihave ever seen. Cant believe Brad Pitt took it on.
TERRIBLE! I can’t believe I wasted 2 hours of my time watching it... DON'T BOTHER! I'm new to Quickflix and wish I had of seen these reviews before I got this dvd! I still don’t get it!
Boring. Nice artistic shots but went nowhere. Too much focus on the pretty photography than story telling. Sound was poor, but you could have watched it on mute and still kept up.
The most terrible movie I have EVER seen, so boring!!!
THE WORST MOVIE I HAVE EVER SEEN - BORING
This movie was one of Margaret Pommeray's top 10 movies for 2011 and I loathed it. I fast forwarded most of it because it was a load of rubbish and so boring beyond belief.
This is a bold attempt to put our familiar everyday microcosm into the context of our surrounding macrocosm. I give it special credit for trying to go outside the tried and tested ways of movie making. Faultless acting, good depiction of dysfunctional parenting and its effect on the children but it leaves a wide chasm between the two worlds and therefore needs re-writing and further experimentation with this subject.
What were they thinking? Worst movie of all time!
The topic has great potential, however the movie maker did not manage to realise that potential. The movie, in quite an obscure way, touched on the spiritual significance of life. I would have liked to have seen the spiritual dimension explored with more depth and sophistication. Instead, the movie maker, got lost in the material dimension. The focus became the experience of growing up and growing old. I was disappointed.
Worst movie I have ever seen.
I didnt watch til the end it was too mind numbing, too much left for interpretation, not enough input to give you a grasp of what they were trying to project. thumbs down big time. ;-(
Did not understand this movie at all! Wouldnt recommend.
NORELLE
I AM A MOVIE BUFF WILL WATCH ANY THING & EVERY THING
BUT NOT THIS ONE ABSOLUTLY RUBBISH HOW ON EARTH DID THESE GREAT ACTORS GOT SUCKED INTO DOING THIS EXCUSE FOR A MOVIE . WHAT WHERE THEY THINKING ABOSUTE WASTE ON TIME.
Absolute waste of time... I think they must of paid Brad Pitt big bucksd to do that movie so people would watch it! Definitely dont recommend!
The worst movie I've seen, just confusing, hard to hear and understand, constantly swapping from one scene to another. I actually was turning it off after 15 minutes but decided to watch it in x32 fast forward, mainly because I wanted to see if it improved ..... it didn't!
Visually it was was beautiful, but the execution of the story was both pretentious and very boring.
One of the worst movies I've ever seen and anyone who says otherwise is a snob!
Ohh my goodness, this was sooooooooo bad. There was no story line that you could follow. It was terrible, such a waste of my time.
Quite indulgent, especially in trying to out-Kubrick Kubrick. I agree also with other reviewers that it was very difficult to hear the dialogue at times. However much of the relationships and life matters still resonated and maintained the humanity of the film. Good performances from the kids, and from Brad Pitt.
A movie ie Entertainment? I don't think so.
Rather a surreal mindbender that is pityfully awful. And I mean awful!!!
Don't waste your time. The only good bit it the stars, but even they could not resurrect this film from the mire it appears to be in.
Wish i had of read the reviews before i got this dvd the worst movie ever made didnt watch it the whole way through and I couldnt work out the stroryline if there was one and i would think watching paint dry would be more exciting than this movie very disappointing sound was terrible voices muffled
I turned it off after 20 minutes as well - so boring - I agree with other reviews - boring - boring - wouldn't even rate one star
Terence Malick may have been inspired by Stanley Kubrick's '2001 a Space Odyssey' to make this movie as there appeared to be long visual reminders of that at the beginning and at the end. The ending of was rather perplexing but beautifully visual. Perhaps Brad Pitt was inspired to make this film while shooting 'The Curious Case of Benjamin Button'??. Unsure what Sean Penn's role was in the movie, his part seemed rather ominous. Not one of Brad Pitt and Sean Penn's greatest films but certainly was a memorable one.
I made it 20 mins if your the type of person that likes to watch grass grow this one is for you. You will also need super hearing i was wondering if there was something wrong with my tv at times very quite.
Turned it off after 20 mins! Boring, could hardly hear what was being said! Very disappointing!
Boring boring boring.................................
worst movie I have ever seen, abstract shots of clouds and volcanoes errupting and dinosours on the beach for about 30 mins. Total waste of time
Turned it off after half hour so boring, thought I'd give it another go the next day but same scenario...turned it off ... so boring and so hard to follow. Had sound turned up to maximum as well and was still hard to hear all the dialogue..
Of the 3,452 movies I have watched in my life this was most definately the worst.
It was very difficult at times to hear what what was being said, even though the DVD sound was turned up, and I think this may have contributed to my assessment that the movie would probably rate as one of the ten worst movies I've seen
I couldn't even finish the movie........boring!
How does this beautifully filmed, spiritual, well acted movie manage to be boring?!
Unlike most people who have reviewed this film, strangely I'm not in either the "love it" or "hate it" groups.
I knew this movie was going to be odd and unconventional so I was prepared for that. I read the synopsis before watching and also read a number of critic and user reviews - some thought it was the best thing since sliced bread, others thought it was a load of pretentious cr#$! You've got to watch the film with an open mind and limited expectations. I sat down to watch the film with both but was neither awestruck nor bored to death.
I found the film to be intriguing for what it was - an artistic portrayal of youth, spirituality and the meaning of life - but I just don't think I am introverted and creative enough to completely appreciate the films artistry.
I found myself engrossed in about 3/4 of the film due to the wonderful imagery - but in the end it just dragged on a little too much.
possibly the worst movie i have ever seen, although technically i haven't - 10 minutes in and i was bored out of my brain..complete waste of time
One of the most audacious movies I have ever seen. It gets better with each viewing.
this is a shocking movie - apparently the story is as told by god - rubbish - brad pitt what were you thinking
Like everyone else, I just didn't get it. Certainly not a movie I expected Brad Pitt to be in. Didn't even watch 1/2 of it. I still don't understand the meaning.
Anybody giving this film a rating more than 2 stars is trying to convince themselves and others that they know more about cinema and art than the rest of us. This movie is ridiculous. It's self indulgent. It's WAY too long and it provides very few moments of actual entertainment. Artistic merit? I don't watch movies purely for their artistic merit, because there are other movies out there with that and more. This movie is a waste of time and if Brad Pitt wins an Oscar - as the 'buzz' suggests he will - then I pity him and his career as it will forever be linked to such an awful and pointless movie where all he really did was grit his jaw. Simon Miraudo is full of himself, giving 5 stars to a movie that he even admits is second best to Synecdoche, New York. Did that get 6 stars, Simon?
I absolutely disagree with Simon Miraudo's rating, this movie is dull and failed to attract my interest at every level. Honestly, I have never been so bored watching a movie and this was my first time sleeping one ... I guess there is a first time for everything right ?
Hands down the worst movie I have ever seen, bizzare attempt at being profound with a million images that start feel like fillers in an attempt to explain the universe & life. The kids in the movie are brilliant, Sean Penn is virtually non-existent.
slow, slooow, dull..and the point was? must be an "art house" film
I would like to send Brad Pitt a bill for the 3 hours of my life I will never get back. What a CROCK !!!! Self indulgent Bullshit beyond belief.
This movie is a waste of time. I love Brad Pitt & Sean Penn, but this movie was so bad not even they could save it for me!
Please don't watch this movie. Forget money, please think about your time. Time is valuable.
The story centers around a family with three boys in the 1950s. The eldest son witnesses the loss of innocence. This film is comotose. Dont bother
The imagery is quite beautiful and the music is great, but at 120-odd minutes, this turns into a bit of a slog. It borders on self-indulgent and I can see why people would hate it. We were pretty confused at the end. There are some fine moments, but they are few and far between. Not a traditional movie by any stretch.
I couldn't even watch the whole film....... Very dissapointed. Would def. not recommend.
absolute rubbish, what a waste of money making this movie
Well, thats 2 1/2 hours I'll never get back. You can't just cast a couple of good actors, write an inane storyline and call it symbolic. Thats a cop out term for "I couldn't think what to write so I just strung a few ideas together". The most boring, tedious film I have seen in a long time.
.......dinosaurs......what the hell !.........the first 40 minutes didn't make sense...mmmm....in fact, none of it did!
Bored, bored, bored....oh hang on... there are some nice pictures from the Hubble telescope and the photography is pretty good.... but no..... here comes some more bored, bored, bored. ....... what was it all about? Another odd discovery.....There was a death of a child too.... but which one? Both brothers seemed to be young when we see them again in what.... heaven? Oh please.... they wasted Brad Pitt and Sean Penn in this I think.... but then without them who would watch the movie...... not me if I had known.
Artistically brilliant. This film is a brilliant showcase of Cinematography. However, it is WAY too long and I just didn't have the patience to wait 26mins for the opener to finish.
I actually found the Dogma rules listed on the imdb far more interesting than actually watching this movie properly.
Not for everyone, and certainly not for people who only watch main streem blockbusters.
Sure, it's got beautiful cinematography but can they really claim credit for all those nature and NASA space shots? It reminded me of Koyanasquatsi but more painful, because your expectations are that there is a narrative ... and it just never comes. The whispered words over the music are like a bad new age experience and soooo tedious. You really need to fast forward through at least half of it to get to the story and even then it's a banal story. Some would say poignant, but I beg to differ. Perhaps it is different on the big screen where you can immerse yourself in the delicious imagery, but for a movie on a normal TV-size screen? I say give it a big miss.
A minor Malick - I'd put it below The New World - but a minor Malick is still vibrant and encompassing cinema. Great performances from Jessica Chastain and Sean Penn.
A truly wonderful film of cosmic vision and poignant humanity. The meaning of our lives, the highs and lows, the episodes of love and grief, the moments of joy and despair, our perception of meaning, our birth and death ... all set in the glorious context of the birth and life of the entire universe. The metaphor of the tree, silhouetted against the sky and the expanding universe beyond, repeats through the film, symbolising the connection between ourselves and the cosmos. Breathtaking cinematography, stunning symbolism, exquisite music. But be warned, some people just won't get it!
Brad Pitt? Sean Penn? Not sure what they were doing in this movie. If you figure out what is going on, well done to you, otherwise it will be a very long 2 1/2 hours.
I know that this was a very divisive movie with a people either applauding or booing, but I absolutely hated it. It was so pretentious and dull, and a number of people walked out when I saw it at the movies, and the rest of the theatre jumped out of their seats the second the credits rolled.
