Pure cinematic gold! This triple Academy Award - winner well deserves its status as a renowned classic. Both a riveting adventure story and richly sardonic tale, The Treasure of the Sierra Madre digs into the depths of the human soul, producing one of Hollywood's all-time richest finds. Directed by the acclaimed John Huston (who also appeared uncredited in the film), the story features Humphrey Bogart, Walter Huston and Tim Holt as a trio of down-and-out Americans in 1920's Tampico. Pooling their resources, they strike off into the mountains of Mexico in search of gold. Hounded by jungle Indians, a fortune-hunting Texan and cold blooded banditos, they must finally confront the most dangerous adversaries of all...themselves.

an excellent piece of acting by Walter Houston which can be enjoyed repeatedly. The plot rather corny for the 21st century viewer but worth seeing again

2 of its 3 academy awards were well earned. The story has not aged, but the story telling style has. This could have been half an hour shorter. On the plus side, there were two great actors with some intense drama. The movie was gold, but don't let that get to you.

Another wonderful movie. Fabulous performances from the American cast. Alas, the Mexicans were all portrayed as stupid stereotypes. Loved the kookaburras in the jungle soundtrack! Do watch the Special Feature, you'll get a lot more out of that, it's really interesting.

“Badges? We don’t need no stinking badges!” Another great movie quote which is remembered not quite as it was in the movie. So says the bandit leader when questioned by Fred C Dobbs, the Humphrey Bogart character who becomes completely corrupted by the lure of gold in this great John Huston movie. It’s a great performance by Bogey especially as he tips over into madness, torn between his burning lust for gold and his conscience. Another great (Academy Award winning) performance comes from Walter Huston (John’s father) as the wise old prospector. John Huston also gathered Oscars for direction and screenplay for this 1948 adventure tale and character study.

The down note at the end is a bummer just like life. I did want a happy ending but no, Huston is a saddist, albeit a great one.
