John Grisham's bestseller A Time to Kill hits the screen with incendiary force, directed by Joel Schumacher (Batman Forever, The Client). Sandra Bullock, Samuel L. Jackson, Matthew McConaughey and Kevin Spacey portray the principals in a murder trial that brings a small Mississippi town's racial tensions to the flashpoint. Amid a frenzy of activist marches, Klan terror, media clamor and brutal riots, an unseasoned but idealistic young attorney mounts a stirring courtroom battle for justice. The superb ensemble also includes Brenda Fricker, Oliver Platt, Charles S. Dutton, Ashley Judd, Patrick McGoohan, Chris Cooper and both Donald and Kiefer Sutherland. These and other talents make A Time to Kill "one of the year's most powerful films" (Jeffrey Lyons, Sneak Previews/ABC World News Now).

This is GREAT movie! It kept me enthralled for the entire 143 minutes. The disc is double sided, so be sure to turn it over to watch the whole movie.

Ridiculous courtroom drama that tries to make the indefensible defensible and succeeds in a totally uncovincing manner. The story is all over the place and characterisation is thin. 2.5 stars

Great (if somewhat long) interpretation of possibly John Grisham's best novel. Extraordinarily good cast - Matthew McConaughey surprisingly effective in a real dramatic role (he actually keeps his shirt on in this one!) My only criticism would be that, unlike the book, much of the detail of the original crime is kept from the audience until the last scene, keeping us, like the jury, somewhat in the dark .

way down south is the setting for this explosive courtroom battle telling of a black man's plight in a predominantly white society, great storyline is portrayed by strong cast whom give it their all in this memorable effort. One of the best.

5 equals 'classic' and this makes it. Director Joel Schumacher doesn't fall for all the Hollywood traps of illustrating everything. He calls on your imagination often and it works a treat. It's nice to be drawn into the story so well. While it is very "Southern Fried", Bullock, Jackson, McConaughey and Spacey bring a whole new tension to the story of the murder of two whites by an African Amercian. McConaughey's summing-up as the defense lawyer on behalf of his unable-to-pay black client is worth the price of admission.

A good courtroom drama although the end was predictable. Good acting but sometimes a bit cruel.
