In 1957, Toby (DiCaprio) and his divorced mother Caroline (Barkin) travel across America looking for a place where life will be better. Desperate to make a decent home life for her son, Caroline agrees to marry her ardent suitor Dwight (De Niro). Dwight might look, walk and talk like the perfect father, but to Caroline's horror he soon turns out to be an evil, bullying tyrant who is determined to make Toby's life as painful and miserable as possible...

Yes, fact is often stranger than fiction. Great movie - especially Leonardo di Caprio's acting even at such a young age. Also the interaction between De NIro and him. You can see in this movie, as in the movie "Marvin's Room" how good an actor Leonardo already was, even from the start of his career. His acting has improved with experience and the variety of movies he's done - but he was shining already in this movie.

Fact is often stranger than fiction. Some of the scenarios are a little unbelievable in the film based on the early life of Tobias Wolff (would Tobias and his mother walk out of her relationship without taking something from the house?) but it's a small quibble. The tale is interesting, the locations are different from what we usually see and the performances from De Niro, Barkin and an impossibly young Leonardo Di Caprio are suiperb. Chris Cooper shines in a small early role, also.

Absolutely great film. I enjoyed it more than any film recently watched. It was interesting to see a young Leonardo Di Caprio. I think this film must have given him a head start in his acting career.
