Antarctica: an extraordinary continent of awesome beauty. It is also home to an isolated outpost where a discovery full of scientific possibility becomes a mission of survival when an alien is unearthed by a crew of international scientists. The shape-shifting creature, accidentally unleashed at this marooned colony, has the ability to turn itself into a perfect replica of any living being. It can look just like you or me, but inside, it remains inhuman. In the thriller The Thing, paranoia spreads like an epidemic among a group of researchers as they’re infected, one by one, by a mystery from another planet. The Thing serves as a prelude to John Carpenter’s classic 1982 film of the same name. Directed by Matthijs van Heijningen, the thriller is produced by Strike Entertainment’s Marc Abraham and Eric Newman (Dawn of the Dead).

The Thing does not immediately jump to mind as a flick that should be atop producers’ lists of properties ripe for the retooling. John Carpenter’s 1982 film of the same name flopped upon release, but has since gone on to foster a fervent following of obsessed individuals who consider it one of the all-time great pieces of horror (I'm among them). Those elements seem to be the exact opposite of what should inspire a reboot; surely they’d rather focus on a picture that had been a success at the box office back in the day and whose brand still inspires name recognition, but has no crazed fans who will lose their mind at the idea of anyone trying to improve upon the original. But, that is not the version of the world we live in, so instead we have Matthijs van Heijningen Jr.’s The Thing 3.0 (even Carpenter’s version was a remake of Howard Hawks’ 1951 The Thing From Another World, and all three are based on John W. Campbell’s novella Who Goes There?).

Technically, Heijningen’s take is a prequel rather than a reboot, though it shares enough DNA with Carpenter’s classic you’d be forgiven for not realising. The action takes place in the days before R.J. MacReady and co. had to face off with the eponymous (yet actually unnamed) creature, over at a Norwegian camp of scientists stationed in Antarctica. Dr. Sander Halversen (Ulrich Thomsen) and his team have discovered an intergalactic spaceship and alien specimen buried beneath the ice, and they celebrate their groundbreaking find with all the debauchery and elation you would normally attribute to a group of icy scientists (not much). They’re a fairly placid bunch actually, and not even the arrival of gorgeous paleonthologist Dr. Kate Lloyd (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) can get their blood boiling. When the creature inevitably thaws and escapes, it begins picking off – and posing – as the isolated campers, which also includes Joel Edgerton, Eric Christian Olsen, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje and Jorgen Langhelle, as varying degrees of Thing-fodder.

Winstead is a great heroine, the creature effects remain impressive (although not any more impressive than the ones we were given back in 1982), and the expansion of the ‘thing’s’ mythology is more than welcome. Where the film falters – and even saying it ‘falters’ feels unfair, as it is indeed solid and serviceable – is when it calls back too obviously to previous instalments. Needless to say, this flick's ‘checking for metal fillings’ sequence will not go down in the history books as the legendary ‘blood test’ has. Heijningen and screenwriter Eric Heisserer also mistake what it was that made the last film so great. Carpenter’s picture was a paranoid ‘cold war’ parable that placed character interactions (and betrayals) above cheap scares. Here, we get very little of that suspicion and mistrust, and instead watch Winstead and Edgerton stalk hallways as if they’re on the hunt for (or hiding from) a generic slasher-flick antagonist. The Thing passes the reboot/prequel 'blood test' - as in, it's worthy enough to not have to incinerate with a flame-thrower - but, as you'd expect, it's far from an improvement on what has come before.

3/5

A prequel to carpenters "the thing." It's a good movie if you liked carpenters. the sceney people have done a good job recreating the structures you see in carpenters. good to see chucks sister in a staring role.

A decent prequel but lacks the atmosphere of John Carpenters 1984 classic. It finishes where Carpenters starts and has fantastic continuity of story line. An enjoyable watch.

Despite the modern CGI and special effects, this movie `pales' in comparison to the original `The Thing'. The built up suspense was predictable.

Well at least it killed an hour and a half... No surprises and the advancement in special effects technology from the 1982 original to this didn't add much. I'm a big fan of the original and this was poor in comparison, it didn't really add anything to the story. Let’s hope when they make a sequel/prequel to 'They Live' that it’s an improvement, "I’m here to chew bubble gum and kick ass, and I'm all out of bubble gum" aaaamazing..

Spunky yank female paleontologist heads polewards, joining 18-strong team of rugged Norwegians in claustrophobic killer-alien friendly camp. Betters dull Norse engineers and medicos at their jobs. Please, PLEASE alien, eat her first! Norsemen mere splatterfodder for truly gory alien beast, but girl outwits allcomers. Infected dog escapes to neighbouring yank camp. Girl escapes to who cares where.

Great special affects, suspenseful and atmospheric but eventually, predictable. The script is problematic following a typically tried and true Hollywood formula. Like most of its type ‘The Thing’ leaves the audience in no doubt that a threat is coming to consume the world. Metaphors abound: with diseases, in war, the environment and each is cataclysmic. I would really like it if a writer or director made a statement with a definitive end to a film [of this genre] instead of the usual, which is conspiratorial and ambiguous.

Good film. Enough gore but not enough of the atmosphere of John Carpenters version. As a prequel it stands alone but I was hoping for more fun and insight.

A superb prequel to the great John Carpenter original. Many faithful of the original didn't like this one but it's simply adds to the mythos of THE THING in such a positive way. Modern special effects give it the boost it deserves yet it still sticks close to the intense creepiness and thrills of the original. The ending is a fantastic tie-in the to start of the 1982 film and has that down beat conclusion that all of Carpenter's films possess. Great viewing.

John Carpenter's The Thing starring Kurt Russell is one of my favourite movies of all time but I won't go on about it. This reboot/sequel/prequel/equal/whatever is just an average thriller. May watch it again to fully grasp what went wrong.

Did you watch the original version? If so, then yes, you'll find this so much more interesting and acutally, well written for today's audience! This is one that can keep you guessing and well you may just be right about who it is, but you may be wrong too! I loved it when the main character asked to check everyone's mouth. Quite smart! Watch it - top 50 home movies at least.

This is NOT A REMAKE its a prequel set around the Norwegian crew that chase THE THING at the start of the Kurt Russell. I thought it was a well made and very enjoyable movie that ends by joining straight to the start of the 1982 Kurt Russell movie. All in all, A top movie for any REAL fan of the orig 1982 movie.

Disappointing remake. Cinematography was stunning. I was a huge fan of the original, mainly because of Kurt Russell. This movie doesn't improve on the original it detracts from it. Don't waste your time.

Excellent remake or prequel (as you will understand in the end and if you have seen the original) The special effects are so good, the action, the acting ...all good. Worth a watch even if you have seen the original.

(Some Spoilers) If you are going to do a Prequel to a much loved and much respected film then at least add something new to the mythology. John Carpenter's The Thing was a tightly controlled piece of horror dealing with isolation and paranoia and the effects were fabulous (for the time). This Prequel focus's on the Norwegian camp who discovered the alien in the ice, but adds nothing to the story that couldn't already be guessed at. The only joy in this film was the uniformly excellent acting from the Norwegian cast who by all accounts are complete nutters. Everyone else is rubbish. The updated effects are gorier but don't scare you at all. In the original, the team put a hot fuse into petri dishes of their own blood to test if they are human - in this one it's 'open you mouth I need to see if you have fillings' YAWN! At least the final scene has some tension to it as you see a helicopter chasing a lone dog across the snow.......which dovetails nicely into John Carpenter's opening scene. I honestly wished I hadn't bothered.

Not a bad film. Not as "edge of your seat" trhilling as hoped for. Not much of Joel Edgerton as there could have been. But still a good couple of hours.

This is slightly above your average sci-fi horror only because of its association with the original. It was very wise of them though, not to attempt to re-make a cult classic, and instead opt to tell the story of the Swedes who discovered The Thing prior to the beginning of the first film. In that sense its not bad. The first film though, relied heavily on the tension arising from the 'it could be anybody' scenario, whereas this takes the tired route of more gore, less suspense. In a word - average.

I am not overly partial to remakes and this is definitely the case in regards to The Thing. It is so overly cliche alien wise that I found myself nodding off during certain parts of the film. If you have not seen the original and are a bit of a wuss when it comes to horror films then this movie might deliver the few jumps/scares that you are looking for.

Good storyline for a prequel to the original Thing movie. Improves on the special effects, but the tension doesn't live up to the original. Still worth watching.

A disappointing prequel, an average horror with cheap scares which lacks the atmosphere and tension that came with the original. Some scenes after the credits start rolling so watch out! (I almost missed them)

This Movie is in fact not a re-make of the original 1984 Movie 'The Thing", but is in fact a Prequel which ends where the older movie begins. The '84 Movie left a lot to the imagination, whereas this one uses all the latest CGI tricks to bring as much gore as possible to the screen. Overall it is a fairly good movie, but not as good as the original.

ok viewing. I was pretty disappointed (but expected to be). Movie makers could not possibly improve on jc's '84 classic. (can't improve on perfection). i found this not to be a 'remake', but moreso a 'bad copy with updated technological support'. Still can't compete though. If anyone wants to see this title in all it's glory look for john carpenters 1984 version. That's easily a five star rating
