Disappointing. This movie is not in the same mould as it's predecessor, "In the Heat of the Night". The acting was OK, but I think that the dialogue and slow story make this a film that you really won't care for. The over- the- top 60's soundtrack in the movie, cheapens it too. I actually missed the last couple of minutes of this movie, and didn't bother to replay it! For those of you that may just want to sit back and not think too much, it'll fill in some time.

I love "In the heat of the night" and probably expected too much of this sequel. There is far too much political and social content too be relevant or interesting to this generation. Sorry.

The characterisation of Virgil Tibbs is already well established from 'Heat of the Night', but the crimes he is investigating this time lack the tension, underlying race issues and small-town characters which 'Heat' created. This second film shows that Rod Steiger's role as the Police Chief in 'Heat' was an essential foil to the Tibbs character, which is clearly missing in this follow-up. I liked it, but had expected better. In the end it became "just another big city crime thriller" which happened to star Sydney Poitier.
