I waited for this film to get better but it never did. I will never get that time back again. Don't waste your time.
one of the best American movies ever great acting and story you cant say that about most American movies
don't miss this one
An epic story with a grinding tone that sets this movie up for a masterpiece ending. The characters to and fro strikes kept this battle for riches and solitude so alive. Daniel Day-Lewis with an unforgettable performance makes the audience respect the fact that his character Plainview has come so far to achieve such a wealthy status. He is in his own right a deserved winner. But a greedy one at that, which makes this story so interesting, accompanied by beautiful cinematography and music that puts you on the edge of your seat. Definately sits in my top 10.
I would have given this movie more even though it was a bit slow but it kept breaking up and we would miss quite a bit of the film when we had to fast forward to get it started again. Not sure why it finished like it did.
Utterly fantastic film. Not only do I consider this to be Paul Thomas Anderson's best work, but I also regard it to be one of the best films of the 2000s. The scenery is breathtaking, the recreation of the period is perfected, the performances (namely Daniel Day Lewis) are outstanding and the story of Daniel Plainview is compelling. The slow pace and demand for constant focus will turn off many people (particularly the younger ones) but once you have that "There Will Be Blood" is an exhilirating experience.
I agree with mash, found it very slow and I actually FF parts ut at the same time I was intrigued by this movie and wanted to see where it lead., then all of sudden it was over!
Slow moving but an interestingly strange movie.
Another brilliant movie written for the screen and directed by Paul Thomas Anderson. So many scenes are set up without the need for exposition laced dialogue, the director opting to let the stunning cinematography and intelligent score do the talking. Daniel Day Lewis is terrifying and utterly compelling as the driven 'oil man', Daniel Plainview. The film is loosely based on Upton Sinclair's 'Oil!' and only covers the first quarter of the book, which perhaps explains why despite its length, some of the plots seem unresolved. This is an intense, dark film that demands your attention.
Great style, great soundtrack, great directing, great acting and great cinematography but some of the story lines being developed in the film didn't go anywhere.
The epitome of perfect film-making. I've noticed some commentors labelling it slow. I would call it steady-paced. There was not a minute of this where my eyes weren't glued to the screen. Daniel Plainview is a great character and beautifully done by Daniel Day-Lewis. A must-see!
Awesome performance by Daniel Day Lewis - can see why he won the Oscar. Something really different, and we found, enjoyable - not the usual Hollywood ("let's spell it all out for our moron American audiences") Narrative and Plot. Very dark and foreboding, the score just adding to this (in a way that reminded me of the way the score was used in Van Dieman's land to build a dark sense of dread). Looking for something out of the norm, then this is for you. If you're not - go watch MIB or The Santa Clause again.
Not one bit of joy or happiness anywhere in this movie.
A dark movie about a dark struggle in dark times.
Not even the wedding was happy.
A waste of effort!!
absolute rubbish of a movie and the only blood you see will be at the end and not exciting at all
Daniel Day Lewis is brilliant in this film. I love the ending!!!
Well expected a lot more from this movie. Very slow and although was to be a "thriller" I am still yet trying to work out where and when. Its alright if nothing else to watch, but its a "one-off" for me.
A lot of better movies out there.
Don't believe anyone who says this film is tedious. It's NOT. My eyes were glued to it the entire time. Paul Thomas Anderson is a genius film-maker. And Daniel Day Lewis IS Daniel Plainview. Enough said
Far too long, too slow. Didn't grab my attention. Didn't finish watching it.
Daniel Day-Lewis was excellent but it is one of the most tedious films you will ever see.
I'm with a couple of the other member's reviews... despite DDL's masterful characterisation the editor needed to slice a good third of this movie off... way too laborious to the point of being tedious... I thought the filming was shoddy... support cast
Real entertaining movie .The ending could of been better.Worth a watch.
Wow! Such a dark, dark tale. Daniel Day-Lewis simmers with menace throughout this movie. A superb performance but there is little, if any, redemption in this story and the lack of light and shade makes it quite harrowing to watch. Still, if you like intensity this film has it and then some.
What a shoddy film! What was Daniel D-L thinking of in making it. Don't waste your time.
Yes, it has stunning cinematography and intense performances. Plus a portrait of descent into madness which rivals that of Kane.
The music score is beautiful and strange, and creates a thoroughly unsettling tone throughout the film.
I couldn't help drawing analogies about the dangers of rampant capitalism, and its destructive force both for nature and for ordinary people. Add to this the madness of fundamentalist religion, and a rivalry between the two that was, on a deeper level, a kind of sickening alliance.
But most importantly, this film affected me in a way that few films do. It strongly stayed with me for days, and weeks later I still think about it regularly. I'm not even sure why, but there it is.
So whats new, yet another movie about blokes behaving badly. And lo, once more it is revealed that money and power do not bring you happiness. That said Daniel Day Lewis turns in a convincing portrayal of a rather nasty man and the cinematography and sound track work well together.
A fantastic film about a hard and emotionally deprived man. Just awesome.
Too long , I kept waiting for it to get interesting . It Did'nt !
Very slow moving, pretty bored by the whole thing as were the whole family. Disappointing.
Tedious and unpleasant. It may be a perspective on a sociopathic businessman but does not provide an edifying view of the oil industry as such. The character other than DDL are hollow and unimagined. Perhaps provides a good reason for being for OH
Very good film. Daniel Day Lewis is great to watch. Hard to believe it was him
A fairly powerful movie of obsession which is driven largely by the tour de force performance of Daniel Day Lewis. The religious aspect of the story doesn't quite work and the ending is a bit daft. However, it sticks in one's mind.
Harder to get into than PT's other films, but remarkable nonetheless.
excellent movie. But long- requires concentration for 21/2 hours. It is NOT a feel good movie
There Will Be Blood.
Great movie, can see why Daniel Day Lewis won a oscar for this.
Was so looking forward to seeing this, but found it utterly dull for the 1st half hour, the middle was good. Then an overacted ending. Can't see what all the fuss was about.
Great acting but a bit deep and violent. Not for the kids.
It was an OK movie. I felt it was a little longer than it needed to be.
Can't Say I enjoyed it. To slow, hardly any background music and very boring.
This was a powerful film and very enjoyable.
Entertaining, no doubt about it and I would recommend it, but the soundtrack and the ending is a shocker.
Entertaining but for such a long movie the ending was disappointing.
Daniel Day-Lewis once again proves why he the leading actor of his generation as Daniel Plainview, oil baron and father. Beautifully shot, acted and directed, this film will go down as a classic and will be shown at film schools worldwide for the rest of eternity.
Pretty harsh subject but well acted.
This film was bizarre enough to be a Cohen movie. Strange movie, strange dialogue and a soundtrack that totally does your head in, but still, once started we had to continue watching it to the end. Strange ending, strange Sean Connery accent by Day-Lewis but actually quite entertaining to watch.
An absolutely brilliant film from Paul Thomas Anderson. I didn't think he would ever be able to top Magnolia (one of the best films of the 90s) but he has. Rivetting, with a titanic performance from Daniel Day-Lewis.
Possibly I just wasn't in the mood, but I only lasted about 30 minutes before turning this off. I might give it another go at a later date. I found the bit I did watch sombre and bleak and very hard going.
Was recommended this movie by a friend and was looking forward to it, however it dragged on, and the beginning with the lack of dialogue really bugged me, as did most of the music. Daniel Day Lewis' acting was brilliant, and I really enjoyed the cinematography, but unfortunately it didn't make up for the tediousness of the film. Two stars.
GOOD MOVIE - ending was a bit abrupt, could have been better.
Loved this. Daniel D-L showed us how complicated and believable a character can be. The music reminded me of the soundtracks to old movies- the way it plays an up-front role in building tension in the plot.
DD Lewis was was excellent and his performance in this movie is reason alone to watch it.
Wow he is good, awsome. The movie itself is interestign and a little boring at the same time.
Good movie, not great, again DD Lewis makes it.
A remarkable and totally engrossing movie that keeps you intrigued from beginning to end about where the story is going. Set in another time (around the turn of the 20th century), the story nevertheless resonates with modern relevance involving oil, boom and gloom, and religious charlatans.
What can you say about Daniel D-L? probably just to be in awe. This such an exceptional portrayal on a number of levels.
Very slow movie, acting wasn't the best, at times didn't really get the storyline. Why did I watch it all the way through... hoping for it to get better
A story about one man?s obsession for oil, money and himself. I can see some of what the accolades are for ? a truly beautiful looking film and brilliant acting from Daniel Day Lewis and Paul Dano ? but it didn?t ?do it? for me. Frankly the plot is slow, a bit predictable and not terribly engaging because none of the characters are particularly likeable. In fact they are caricatures ? of evil or crazy or sad people who are so one-dimensional as to be unbelievable. And the much talked about music score is simply distracting noise. I doubt you need to sit through two and a half hours to learn that greed and selfishness are not the path to happiness: you either know it already or you can?t be taught it.
Apart from a great performance from Daniel Day-Lewis this movie has very little to recommend it.
The story, such as it is, moves in fits and starts with a soundtrack that is almost unbearable and only serves to make this movie even more unpleasant and uncomfortable.
Only for the curious.
Dan Day Lewis is superb in the lead and ably supported by a good cast. Unfortunately the story is slow and the movie tends towards the long side.
For this reason only 2 stars...but worth watch solely for the acting.
We were so disappointed with this movie - after all the hype and DDL winning an Oscar, plus he is my favourite actor - we found it to be very slow and ponderous and I felt no connection with any of the characters. The 'music' if you can call it that, was quite irritating at times. What a let-down!
Big disappointment, this is one of my favourite actors. But even he couldn't save this mess. Too much of the film shot in the dark. Too much mumbling. Not for me.
you'll never get the couple of hours back. life is too short to be watching slow and painful movies like this.
A long, slow film with nothing much going for it except Daniel Day Lewis' acting.
slow and long. Definitely not for family viewing
Daniel Day-Lewis in the lead role is superb. His single-minded focus and ambition is almost scary. His voice is very Jack Palance in this and the way he looks and moves are just so believeable. Excellent story.
While wishing to bestow a sense of grandeur, this film turns out to be a GRIND being far too obsessive and persnickity with details. Oh, where are the editor's scissors when you need them?
I could only rate this movie as a 2-star. First half was gereat for sets, cameras and story development - but it went nowhere in second half except repetitious acting (very good) of DD Lewis. I just did not understand the finale (murder) and the rejection of his adopted son - that spoiled it for me. Still the first hour was awesome.
Brilliant. A long movie, but I found it gripping from start to finish. The acting was fantastic - particulary DD Lewis and the priest.
Wonderful movie and definitely deserves the accolades it has received.
Movie took soo long to get into and there wasn't much plot. Basically if you would like to waste almost 3 hours of your life, watch this movie...
Totally bizarre film. Slow and I kept waiting for the story to start.
Great movie-Daniel Day Lewis is brilliant.
Worth Watching - Great acting from Daniel Day Lewis, but the story is slow.
Intense epic about a megalomaniac who is so hell bent on making it oil rich he loses everything in the process. There is very little dialogue but when there is it packs a punch. Daniel Day Lewis is great but the characters of Eli the Preacher and Plainview???s Son are also incredible.
This is an undeniably a great performance from Daniel Day Lewis as the utterly ruthless oil tycoon, Daniel Plainview. He has the best actor Oscar nomination and my money is on him walking off with it. He is mesmerising in the role – like a train wreck in slow motion, you just can’t take your eyes off him. I have some doubts as to whether the rest of the movie stacks up with the lashings of praise that have been bestowed on it. It seemed a tad long and yet still over ambitious in the grand scope of the story it is seeking to tell. Apart from Plainview none of the other characters are particularly well developed. The very few parts of the movie where Plainview is absent tend to drag. But these are small quibbles and on the whole this is a grand portrait of pathological greed and heartlessness, leading to madness and destruction. Very cheery stuff.
