A real story from 1909 serves writer/director Polonsky as vehicle for a parable about the fate of oppressed minorities. The publicity slogan perfectly synthesizes it: "Touching, tormenting, true".

The first film by Abraham Polonsky after being blacklisted in the HUAC era starts poorly with the shock of white actors playing Native Americans, but gradually, the rhythms of the film change from TV-movie awkward to something else: Robert Redford vs. Robert Blake in a strung-out psych-tinged Dr Seuss rockscape.
