Walt Disney Pictures presents Tangled, one of the most hilarious, hair-raising tales ever told. When the kingdom's most wanted - and most charming - bandit Flynn Rider (Zachary Levi) hides out in a mysterious tower, he's taken hostage by Rapunzel (Mandy Moore), a beautiful and feisty tower-bound teen with 70 feet of magical, golden hair. Flynn's curious captor, who's looking for her ticket out of the tower where she's been locked away for years, strikes a deal with the handsome thief and the unlikely duo sets off on an action-packed escapade, complete with a super-cop horse, an over-protective chameleon and a gruff gang of pub thugs. In theatres this holiday season in Disney Digital 3D™, Tangled is a story of adventure, heart, humour and hair - lots of hair.

A little rebellion

The Mouse House has slain the two-headed dragon of Snark and Sarcasm, overthrown the Ogre of Unoriginality and stormed the castle of Children’s Dreams! O.K., that last one sounds kind of creepy, but fear not, Disney’s intentions are pure and just. Nathan Greno and Byron Howard’s Tangled – the fiftieth feature from Walt Disney Animation Studios – is an earnest, unironic and enchanting take on the classic tale of Rapunzel. It’s the studio’s first film in a long time that feels essential. Having dabbled in some DreamWorks-baiting (Chicken Little) and some Pixar-impersonating (Bolt) in recent years, Tangled recalls the golden age of Disney, and is perhaps their best film since The Lion King. Gone are the annoying (and instantly dated) pop-culture references and vanquished are the rather lame forays into the “future”. Disney are asking us to look back (first with Tangled and next with Winnie the Pooh), reminding us why they’ve been the number one name in children’s entertainment for over 80 years.

Tangled feels both familiar and fresh; the hallmark of any instant-classic. Screenwriter Dan Fogelman has reinvented the classic Brothers Grimm tale not by modernising it (and you just know some producer in Hollywood was hoping to make a live-action version in a hair-salon starring Katherine Heigl), but by creating a new mythology; one that honours and expands upon that which already exists. Our villainess is Mother Gothel (Donna Murphy), a crazed, elderly woman so desperate for eternal youth that she steals a magical child (a crueler writer would insert a Madonna joke here; just thought I’d note that). The child is, of course, Princess Rapunzel (Mandy Moore); born with the aid of a sunlight-infused flower, Rapunzel’s ever-growing hair can heal the sick, ensnare the devious, and offer eternal life. Gothel snatches her from her royal parents, and keeps her “safe” in an isolated tower.

The twist: Rapunzel isn’t trapped in the tower; she’s not handcuffed to the radiator, nor is she chained to her bedposts. She’s guilted into staying in the tower by her overprotective surrogate-mother; frightened into imagining the horrors that lay outside her door. When Rapunzel turns 18 and finally makes her escape (which she does with the roguish, porn-star-name-having Flynn Rider, voiced by Zachary Levi), she merely intends to spend a few days in the real world. Within hours, she regrets her decision, and is distressed to have inflicted such pain and worry upon her loving mother. Flynn offers her some cursory solace, and simultaneously explains why Tangled is so wonderful. He says that disrespecting and upsetting one’s parents is a part of growing up; “a little rebellion” is a necessary ingredient in becoming an adult. Disney – perhaps frightened by the post-Shrek state of satirical kids’ films - has veered away from reinterpreting classic fairy tales. Finally, and fifty films in, they recognise that reinvention is a necessary part of “growing up”. This doesn’t mean they have to change who they are deep down inside, but instead, to unearth the elements that made them great, and introduce themselves to a new generation.

Those elements include: wondrous, catchy songs penned by Alan Menken and Glenn Slater; sumptuous CG animation (That gorgeous hair! Those beautiful character designs!) which understandably required a record-breaking budget to render; wonderful voice work from Moore, Levi and Murphy; a number of heart-swelling sequences; romance; passion; thrills; et cetera! I understand Tangled went through a number of changes during its six-year production; from story to style to title (the film was originally called Rapunzel Unbraided). You would think that this would lead to a catastrophic failure; how could an artist’s vision survive such overhauls. Well, maybe we should look at it in another light. After six years of meticulous crafting, Disney has delivered a wildly enjoyable treat in Tangled. After all, you only slave over the things you love. And this one was definitely made with love.

4/5

Best ever! Even adults will love this as it does contain some adult themes - but its still gentle enough for the littlies. As always the visuals and audio are brilliant - it is Disney - and this one is definately worth a watch...or a purchase, like we did.

How wonderful to see a Disney fairytale which paints the female character as strong, independent and bright! Well done. "Tangled" is a modern remake of the Rapunzel story with beautiful songs, lovely illustration and fun characters; worth watching, probably more than once... or twice. 5 stars.

As a bloke I loved this movie: shared it with my wife. I loved that the feature of this film was a young girl finding her way in life: there are few movies that have a strong female lead. There is a lot of fun in this movie and it is great for kids and parents to share. I admit here, to the whole wide world, that some parts of this movie brought tears to my eyes. Maybe I am just a 'softee', but, the able storytellers bring such poignancy to the moment that you would have to be almost heartless not to feel something.

Take the horse from Hercules, the bar scene from Beauty and the Beast, the prisoned princess from Aladdin, mix in modern female empowerment and a half baked story and you get Rapunzel. Instead of having great original stories and ideas they can tell (eg. Wall-e, Up) or re-invent an existing one (eg. The Frog Princess), they just ended up mushing up all the other Disney movies they have done into the one nostalgic movie. Very disappointed as I am an avid Disney fan.

Loved it!!!! I watched this one with my two boys aged 9yrs & 6yrs. Given that they have seen almost every animated movie there is they are pretty hard to please. It was an absolute delight to sit down one rainy afternoon & find we were all so entertained with the movie that we forgot to get the brownie out of the oven before it burnt. A nice surprise was how "on trend" they were with the language used through out the movie. No old fashioned or boring dialogue here.

Might have just been the hype of the movie, but I'd expected more... yeah there were lovable characters and plenty of funny family moments, but I guess there's only so much originality an animated movie can achieve. Kids will enjoy this, but adults will probably find 'Tangled' pretty average. Still enjoyable to watch though.

This is a delightful, well acted film that most families will appreciate. It has some laugh-out-loud moments, entertaining characters and some really beautiful scenes. It is fairly predictable (though what kid's movie isn't?) and isn't as witty as Shrek or Ice Age. I think it could have been better if it wasn't a musical, and if the lead character was rendered a little less doll-like: however overall I enjoyed it.

watch this movie it is fantastic for all ages and is a great switch on such an old story. I like this version much better :-)

I'm so sick of Disney Princess girly nonsense that I was reluctant to take my 5 year old daughter to see this. Glad I did - it was GREAT! Beautiful animation (especially in 3d), proper characters, fast-paced script and funny dialogue (even for adults). The relationship between Rapunzel and her Cher-like mother is interesting, and there's no emphasis on what Rapunzel looks like or is wearing.
