It's better to be a fake somebody than a real nobody. That's how working class struggler, Tom Ripley (Matt Damon), feels. So when a wealthy shipping magnate mistakes him for an Ivy league classmate of his son, Dickie (1999 Academy Award nominee, Jude Law), Tom allows him to believe it. Dickie's father then has a proposal for Tom: bring his wild playboy son back from Southern Italy and he will be paid handsomely, It is an offer someone like Tom could not refuse. And so the wheels of deception start rolling. Tom finds and befriends Dickie and his gorgeous girlfriend, Marge (Gwyneth Paltrow) who are unaware of his false identity or his motives...and they also never suspect the dangerous extremes to which Ripley will go, to make their lifestyle his own.

What an intriguing movie. Saw it on TV but not the last 1/2 hour and have finally got around to it. Guess justice is seen to be done but curve balls and excellent acting and scenery along the way. Well done. Anything Matt Damon does is AMAZING.

Clever and intriguing plot that keeps you guessing all the way. Surprisingly slow . Cate Blanchett shines in a small role and Matt Damon excels as usual.

The story of an outwardly, clean-cut guy, starting out in life, who changes his persona when he sees the opportunity to live the high-life of the super-rich. Suspense builds as he wriggles out of one awkward situation after another, sometimes having to use extreme methods to avoid exposure. Matt Damon is perfect in this roll, always appearing calm and unconcerned, only his face giving us tiny glimpses of what's going on in his head. This movie stays in the mind long after others have disappeared.

While I liked Jude Law and Gwynneth Paltrow in "The Talented Mr Ripley", Matt Damon gave me shits. This film became so boring, in fact, I fell asleep. Have absolutely no idea what happened in the end, and I don't really care.

Intense sorta movie, but really good acting by Matt Damon. I wouldnt watch it again as it can be disturbing but I would recommend it to someone who hasnt seen it before.

A good, if slightly long-winded, movie with all players turning in great & believable performances. For once I even liked Gwynneth Paltrow. Of course we were not sure of the part Matt Damon was playing but that was the whole point. The ending was a sad surprise but probably could't end any other way. And la bella Italia - what can we say about that gorgeous place!

Good story and script but the casting just didn't work. Neither Law nor Damon were right for their roles. If better cast this movie had potential to be great but now just has to settle for good.

Absolute garbage - illogical story line with Matt Damon at his worst. The actors obviously had a couple of weeks to fill in between real acting jobs.

The Italian scenery in this movie is what initially captured my interest in the first place. A good movie with several twists and turns.
