Quentin, a moron who drives everyone crazy with his mindless and incessant banter is caught after a hold-up and ends up in a prison cell with Ruby, a hard-boiled thief who refuses to say a word to anyone. Before being caught, Ruby managed to hide a vast amount of stolen money he in turn robbed from Vogel, a dangerous criminal who killed Ruby's lover, Sandra.

Despite the fact that Ruby will have nothing to do with him, Quentin develops a deep friendship for him. Ruby manages to get transferred to the mental ward, followed by Quentin who pulls off a clumsy yet successful escape for both of them, just as Ruby is about to escape alone.

This had been strongly recommended to me so imagine my disappointment when I discover that the subtitles are useless and I was unable to follow the story. Who wrote the subtitles, some bilingual drunk with a short attention span?

I found this film to be unwatchable - Depardieu's penchant for slapstick roles can mean he's a bit tedious from time to time, but Reno I love and was hoping for something a bit more interesting from this partnership than this film delivered. It was cringeworthy and predictable, and many of the one-liners were delivered with as much finesse as Basil Brush's "boom, boom". Might appeal to an 8 year old.

Hilarious, fun and entertaining. Geard Depadieu and Jean Reno play the part so well of an idiot and a moron who escape from jail by fluke. Lots of laughter all the way through.

Laughed from beginning to the end. I was looking for some light "mind candy" and was concerned that the French sub-titles and European film making might make me have to think. Turned out that the great actors did the work for me and I was well entertained.

I absolutely adore this movie - I purchased a copy on order through my local video store. I absolutely love Jean Reno and Gerard Depardieu and they are both brilliant in their roles here. We laughed the whole way through the movie and by the end our sides were aching. My favourite part would have to be when Gerard (Quentin) is driving his cellmates nuts with his rediculous stories like the one about trying to train a spider. I also enjoyed the part where he compares ruby to a horse and it looks as though Jean Renos eyes have literally been digitally placed on a photo of a horse so they look just like each other. This movie is definitely worth watching and unless you have no sense of humour whatsoever you will not regret it! HIGHLY RECCOMMENDED!!!

Great slap-stick comedy. My fourteen year old son was loved it, despite it being subtitled. He's not usually a fan of foreign films.

What fun! Here's a pair of mismatched crims: Gerard Depardieu as Quentin is dimwitted, overly friendly and insufferable and Jean Reno’s Ruby is callous, murderous and shrewd. It’s most unlikely that these two can be partners let alone friends especially when Ruby often shouts “Tais-toi!” (“Shut-up!”) at garrulous Quentin. However this is an excellent comedy pairing, and good laughs abound right from the start when Quentin attempts to rob a Paris moneychanger who’s out of Euros. Later Quentin does some imitations of horse sounds with hilarious results. The formula plot has some unexpected twists and the dialogue sparkles, heightened by the film’s two stars splendid comic timing. Three and a half stars.

Lightweight concept expertly executed by two of France's best actors. Suspend disbelief, and reality, to smile through this Keystone Cops-like farce.

Ultimately dissappointing from a promising cast. The problem is the writing; even the best actors would struggle with it.

Ugly charmers Dippidoo and Reno in an oddball odd couple flic with lots of farcical violence and kooky humour and a dodgy daggy story that works with old-style style. Midnight Run without the pretensions. Fun.

Depending on the kind of comedy you like this is a pretty funny film. It's almost like an old Ealing comedy in some ways. Snappy and with some style, it goes off the rails a bit towards the end but has some great laughs in the first hour. Both Reno and Depardieu are excellent. I have to go to Montargis next time I'm in France....

A wonderful French farce, brilliantly acted good light hearted fun. Would have been five stars except for an over the top shoot out in the final scenes which was at odds with the overall light heartedness of the movie.

An entertaining spoof which requires one to view the plot from a different angle, ie Quentin's viewpoint, following his logic.

I like farcical films but found this one a bit lame. Disappointing considering the brilliant talents of Depardieu and Reno, which was the reason I rented it in the first place.
