Not bad. Needs some more plot in it but generally ok for a relaxing night in.
Excellent movie. Way better than the previous ones, with the possible exception of the first. I like the way they ignored the last 2 movies when making this. :-) Kevin Spacey is great as Lex.
Good addition to the Superman franchise. Good to see it wasn't a complete remake of the Christopher Reeves movies and paid homage to him.
I passed on seeing this in the cinema thinking it would be a load of tripe. How wrong I was! Over 2 hours of story, action, subtle laughs and just great fun. I think people can get too caught up in their heads when watching movies like - relax and enjoy the fantasy. I wasn't familiar with director Bryan Singer but by the end I thought he was a genius. He had a lot going against him... come on - bringing back Superman! No one can replace Christopher Reeves but I don't believe Brandon Routh is trying to. Brandon Routh was strong, manly, pensive and brought subtlety to the character (that I think a lot of people missed). Kate Bosworth was good but not my choice for L.Lane. Parker Posey is hilarious. Kevin Spacey is creepy (a good thing). James Marsden is becoming a fave of mine. Sam Huntington as Jimmy was brilliant. This has become one of my favourite films.
Sam Huntington
I didnt think it was much chop. The originals were far better.
No comparison to the new Marvel Xmen movies and graphics etc. Good if you enjoy reminising the past and reliving your childhood however, wouldnt watch again and my children were VERY bored.
This was pretty unnecessary. Kevin Spacey was a great Lex Luthor, there were some fun sequences and the music always gets me but that was about it. It's like they wanted to fast track the release and in turn went with a fairly ordinary script.
Superman deserves so much more.
Always skeptical when they make modern versions of classics- but I was really impressed with this film. It kept to the original format of the Superman films with Lex Luther as evil as ever! (Kevin Spacey portrayed the character brilliantly) and it had all the magic of the old films too. The guy that played Superman was really good as well- glad they chose well when casting him. I thought he made a good Clark Kent- it must have been hard filling Christopher Reeve's shoes. Only negative is that I didn't think Kate Bosworth was a good match for the Lois Lane character- it should have been someone a bit more feisty! Would have been good to use Teri Hatcher!
Kids loved it. It was a bit soppy for a superhero movie but okay for a lazy Sunday afternoon
Effects were good, even the opening credits were reminiscent of the original Reeve movies, Routh is an excellent replacement for Reeve. But (and this is a big but) the storyline was pitful - the writers going more for the love lost angle than the action that any superhero movie should be based on. Spiderman showed the sacrifices a hero must make to be a superhero, Superman Returns does not do it as well. There had to be better scripts out there to restart this franchise.
was serprised at a new superman good
There have been too many Superman movies and quiet frankly I am getting sick of them.
I sat through this movie, hoping that it would get me excited, but sadly it did not. The plot is, well, just let me say, thin. The acting, not that great.
Now for something positive.
Two things I liked, were the theme music and that the movie is dedicated to Christopher Reeve.
Huh? Forget the atrocious acting and supermans changed abilities (superman used to be powerless and dieing via a single shard of kryptonite around his neck yet now he can lift a whole continent of it with a broken piece embedded in him) ...anyhow forgeting all that, does the plot actually make sense to anyone? One viewing left me confused. He leaves for 5 years yet has a 5 year old son, what about the 9 months pregnancy? Why is Louis Lane upset with him? She must have hooked onto the editors son (Richard?) the very second that Superman disappeared (and remember he left without saying good bye so she probably didnt know right away) soo.. considering she was a major slut anyhow why would she care what Superman had done and why would Superman then care about what she thought?
There are many many more confusing parts to this script but I am not turning my confusion into a long essay here. I am just confused about how people have given this a good rating. Have they not seen the first 2 superman movies? Okay granted, Superman turning back time by reversing Earths rotation was so insanely silly even a 7 year old (me) found it a bit hard to swallow even before I learnt that it WAS silly ...and the dialogue of superman 2 was a tad corny ...yet both movies were monumentally superior. Okay I'll stop now
I clapped. I cheered, I laughed, I stomped my feet, I got a little sad, - and I absolutely loved the whole thing ! I didn't think there could be any equal to Superman 1 but there is - this one. The screenplay very gently and cleverly gives just a hint of subjects affecting all of us today. The plot is ......well, who cares when your at the Saturday afternoon matinee all over again. The credits are inspired by and look like the original Superman 1, but, indicating the scope of this version, are even longer. The visual effects are great, the sound is excellent and, at the end, you realize that it is a true 'feel good' movie. The movie is correctly dedicated to Christopher Reeve who, after playing the original part, turned out to be a real life Superman himself with his super-like 'crusade' for paraplegics.. All in all, a superb, splendid, extremely soul satisfying; 'Superman'.
I was hoping for so much more than this. It was quite a letdown. Kate Bosworth was terribly miscast as Lois Lane and even Kevin Spacey couldn't lift this movie above average. Worth a watch I guess.
Not to bad. My son enjoyed it, more than me.
Superman Returns is a well-made and entertaining film, but unfortunately it is part of an industry trend that I just have to have a little rant against. Please, please, can we stop these endless remakes and sequels? The Superman story is one of the all time great stories of our time, but it has been told, in a number of very good movies, TV shows, cartoons, comics, books, etc. There is no need to tell it again. The same applies to Batman (even more so), Spiderman, Dracula, Frankenstein, Jeckel and Hyde, Pride and Prejudice, and all of the other great stories that are dusted off and recycled with monotonous regularity. The time has come for movie producers to visit their local libraries and bookshops and discover some new, unfilmed stories. This cannot be so hard.
fantastic special effects,a bit predictable but good to watch anyway.
I was expecting so much from this movie and god talk about a let down. The story line was so weak, the acting wooden, there was no chemistry between anyone and the movie relied way too much on CGI. To make things worse, if you have never seen any of the original Superman movies than you have no chance of understanding any of the history of the relationships between the characters. Save your time and money and rent Batman Begins or even Spiderman if you are after a super hero movie.
Great to watch an old favourite character with a new story line. East to watch with not to much violence.
It's worth watching....if you can keep awake!!
Acting is fine, effects fine. But it just seems to go forever and there is no real point to it.
Rather far-fetched (even for a Superman movie!), but it filled in a couple of hours, and I even firured out how to make the picture occupy the whole of the TV screen for the first time!
4 stars if someone better than Kate Bosworth had played Lois
This would probably be quite a good movie if it wasn't just a rehash of the Superman movies already made. Kate Bosworth is certainly no Lois Lane.
I liked the special effects. Story line was good. Overall a good movie.
good superman film, good to see him back
Very, very slow with precious little actual action. Brandon Routh is unconvincing as the man of steel and the plot lacks development and a proper climax. I won't be going out and purchasing this one.
If you are looking for big effects and sound, this delivers. Rather short on plot, just enough to tie the effects together, but what's new with super hero films?
'Remake?' bland, risible addition to a legenday canon that's pretty much run out of balls. Big name villiam unkown hero. What was baldy spacey doing here? The man of steel can't get laidcos he has no game and his bundies are on show...
Good one for Superman fans
This movie didn't stand out as anything special. It seemed that the producers tried to incorporate so many facets into this movie, but failed. The end result was quite bland.
Great fun - watch out for Superman Returns II!
An impressive movie not a bad reteling of the old superman tale. Two thumbs up,more if I had extra hands.
Exiting and enjoyable escape
fantasy the good guy wins,
Not the best Superman movie but if your a fan then go ahead.
Family movie, story line very slow to start, did not live up to the high reviews as far as I was concerned, limited action compared to other superman movies, more of a love story. Just OK.
it was a good movie besides pixalation and sound shifting
Effects were alright. But this still did not make me a Superman Fan.
Storyline was a bit weak. Not as good as Smallville.
I thought it well done almost as good as the original but as you may note just not quite as good.
Too much of the same in the Superman series now
If you are a real big Superman fan but we were a bit disappointed, took us a little while to finish.
Stupid, as usual for a Hollywood film. Why can't Hollywood bring out movies that are remotely believable. Or is it just for kids these days. They should rename the future movies : "You can't kill Superman - even with Kryptonite". A joke. See it if you enjoy BS.
Hollywood 'high concept' schlock, don't bother. The script would have been 1 page, wooden acting ala daytime TV soaps. Effects are good, but that didn't save it.
A fantastic adventure movie that the whole family will enjoy. Brandon Routh in his debut role as Superman is great and has to be congratulated for carrying on the tradition of the "man of steel" in a way that seems like he has done it forever. Kevin Spacey as Lex Luthor is brilliant.
this was entertaining. a girl movie though - a bit of a love story. my husband fell asleep! not much superman action for my son though.
