Super 8 is complete. That sounds more like a minimum requirement for a movie rather than grounds for a rave, but it’s astounding just how fulfilling J.J. Abrams’ latest film is. I left feeling content; I had been gleefully entertained, and had felt my emotional strings plucked (no, not like that). Both a loving, unabashed homage to executive producer Steven Spielberg’s past classics and the logical conclusion of Abrams’ oeuvre so-far, Super 8 goes beyond mere nostalgia-porn or geek-lit to become an awe-inspiring celebration of cinema. It belongs alongside Rango and Inglourious Basterds, two wonderful recent films that similarly paid tribute to classic motion pictures and managed to join their ranks at the same time.

The film begins with Michael Giacchino’s tender score introducing us to the fictional town of Lillian, Ohio, circa 1979. An accident at the local factory has claimed the wife of Deputy Sheriff Jackson Lamb (Kyle Chandler), and everyone in town is wondering if the emotionally distant father will be able to take care of his soft-spoken son Joe (Joel Courtney). Months pass, but Jackson’s pain never subsides. Joe distracts himself by working on a zombie film – ‘The Case! Shot on state-of-the-art Super 8!’with his buddies, including pushy director Charles (Riley Griffiths), explosives expert Carey (Ryan Lee) and the haunted young actress/object of both Joe and Riley’s affection, Alice (Elle Fanning). During one late-night shoot, the kids witness a spectacular train crash. When the military take over the clean-up, and a number of local residents go missing, the kids suspect something nefarious is going on, and that perhaps the train held some extra-terrestrial cargo. Thankfully, they’ve got footage of the crash recorded, so as soon as it’s developed, they’ll be able to examine it and look for clues. (Of course, this being the late 70s, it’ll take about three days. And that’s with a ‘rush’!)

As pretty and appealing as those teaser trailers looked for Super 8 (lens flare and all), it could have all gone to hell. There’s nothing worse than being pandered to, especially by filmmakers who use nostalgia as a weapon. As I said in my Tekken review (yes, I reviewed Tekken, and am now calling back to it): “Tekken isn’t the worst film in the world, but anything other than a full-throated condemnation of it is a celebration of nostalgia-abuse; an urge to movie producers to take advantage of our innocuous fond memories and churn them, Rumpelstiltskin-style, into gold.” Had reliable names like Abrams and Spielberg not been attached since the start, we could have fearfully imagined the pitch session in which some Hollywood producers tried to sell the concept of Super 8 via increasingly trite movie-mashups. “It’s The Goonies, but they’re battling the Cloverfield monster!” “The time-travelling Losties meet E.T. and Elliott!” “Jaws … but with Noah Emmerich and the guy from Friday Night Lights! Didn’t J.J. make that show too? He didn’t? Well, same diff.”

Although those combinations might be accurate to some degree, this film is so much more. There’s a difference between imitation and evolution, and Super 8 feels like the latter. Abrams’ doesn’t just cut-copy-paste Spielberg’s iconic imagery; he knows how to create an indelible hero shot just as ably (the film’s finale will inspire viewers’ jaws to drop in the same manner as when Elliott first rode his bike across the face of the moon). The performances, particularly from the young’uns, are so wonderful; the script is so charming and funny and occasionally heartbreaking; the bonus short-film ‘The Case’ that plays during the credits is so fun. For all of its secrets, the film is surprisingly simple and uncomplicated. Some may be disappointed that there isn’t so much under the surface; that the film is just a thrilling sci-fi movie about a bunch of movie-loving kids, made by a movie-loving kid-at-heart. But when all other blockbusters suffer from featuring too many characters, plot bloat and confusing, committee-compiled screenplays, Super 8 is a rare treat. A complete film.

4.5/5

JJ Abrams does a good job of aping the surface elements of Spielberg (adorable moppets staring at the sky in wide-eyed wonder etc) but is let down by a mediocre script that doesn't have anything for its protagonists to do and can't decide whether it's monster is evil or just misunderstood. The child actors are excellent, though.

Though I didn't think it was great, I thought it was a bold effort from JJ Abrams to pay tribute to Steven Spielberg. If you're a fan of ET, Close Encounters of the Third Kind and War of the Worlds, I'd say it's worth watching. Also, I found the children were exceptionally good, which is a very, very, very rare thing for me to say.

This film starts of really promising but as it continues pass the amazing train wreck the plot diminishes into a predictable Spielberg cliche. However still an entertaining movie to be enjoyed as an early teen years family movie, some parts will make you jump out of your skin, best with surround sound up high. Similar to the far better "Iron Giant".

This is the brainchild of Hollywood wunderkind, J.J Abrams. But don't let that put you off - look, the guy's written and directed some notable tv and film fodder - but he lost me on... yep, you guessed it - LOST. He didn't know when to give up (incidentally, the greatest mystery on that island revolved around the obese guy who - in spite of food rations - never, ever managed to shake a few kilos off. Simply uncanny. But I digress... ) So Super 8. Simply fantastic. Great story, watchable characters, smart children (not obnoxious) and a story that smacks of the same magic that ET had - looking at the world through the eyes of a child. Fantastic special effects don't take the story over - they complement the tale and actually elevate the movie. A highly engaging, thrilling movie. A must-see for pre-teens too. And the pre-teen at heart.

JJ Abrams does a Spielberg on us and manipulates us & keeps us constantly guessing almost to the end, in fact it's a very Spielberg film & it's no surprise he exec produced it. It's a great piece of adventure story telling with a good cast. Spoiler alert - The train wreck is fantastic, and the alien is kept very nicely mysterious in appearance & motive until the end. A self conscious movie but a great ride.

This film is all over the shop; it's what can happen when filmmakers are so engrossed in and infatuated by the commercial results of what they can technically achieve that they ignore or rate as of no importance writing a script with intelligence and credibility.

While it may be a popcorn film, it surpasses the standard of most films of this kind. The characters and story have greater importance than action and you'll find yourself wishing to see even more of them and less of what typically is viewed as 'cool'. The nostalgie value of this film is also quite high and makes one feel younger and I mean that in the best of ways. The sides of this film depicting filmmaking are also a great touch. Abrams and Spielberg have created what I personally regard to be one of the most entertaining movies out. Highly recommended, especially to Goonies fans.

I enjoyed the beginning but once you realize what you are actually watching ( a flick for 13/14 yo ...a popcorn movie) well you don't really need to keep watching as you know how it's going to end.... With smiles, happy ending, everybody is beautiful and we all love each other.

JJ Abrams rebooted Star Trek brilliantly. Super 8 proves he can't do kids movies with quite the same panache despite help from Speilberg. The built up suspense at the beginning - wonderful. The movie within a movie - clever. By the end I was yawning and unable to stop throwing things at the screen. The cast of unknowns were uniformly excellent but the gang should have stayed together. That's what all good kids movie's do - they team up to defeat the evil. When it was just down to the one kid, sharing a moment with the alien. P-lease, gag! Plus I always think they can do more with the stoner kid (there is always one and they missed a moment here).

Its not quiet what I remember about super eight films and cameras but fairly close, what the children saw to what was caught on film tells a totally different picture and the story of what the small town sherrif and his town's people what was on the train, so the Government coverup was up to standard. You can see how people come to not trust their Government about what was happening. A good film to see with the kids and show them the past or how you grew up with the super eight film.

The set-up to this movie is really great. The kids making the film in the small town in the US: totally engaging. The introduction of the genre element - "what's in the box" - limits the movie. Its a shame. A little too self-conscious, or mechanical, or maybe even cynical.

Alien movies seem to follow two paths: 'the good alien' (although still capable of mass destruction and killing) 'and the bad alien' (as in Alien). Equally the supporting casts in such movies divide into 'the good guys' (susally liberal civilians) and the bad guys (usually military/police/corporate types). Well that's all here. So we need to look past the effects (and the well worn 'plot') and into the main characters: their development; their relationships. And its here that this movie excels. The kids roles (this is a kid's movie) are uniformly well done and with a degree of subtleness that surprises. Their backstory, the making of a zombie movie (and dealing with the politics of moviemaking), is a novel way to allow the young characters to explore aspects of life in a believable manner. The 'misunderstood' alien is a typical Spielberg cliche (although visually well done); the kids roles are the attraction.

Basically a cute love story with a nasty homesick alien thrown in. The kids, were a bunch of scoundrels making Super 8 movies, but they were a likeable and entertaining bunch of young actors. The alien was mysterious and slow to show himself, sort of like the monster in Cloverfield (same director) but also similar in style to Godzilla's emergence in it's modern remake. The special effects and the sound were awesome, but once you got closeup with the alien you kinda got the feeling you had seen him somewhere before (remember those aliens that harrassed Sigourney Weaver & Arnie!). However, no complaints. Thoroughly entertaining sci-fi fantasy.

This was a really hyped up movie and I wanted to keep an open mind while viewing it because I didn't want to have too high expectations. Turned out this was probably the best approach, because I think I would have been disappointed otherwise. On the plus side, the story had a good heart, the special effects were very impressive and the two young leads who played Joe and Alice had good chemistry and made you care about them. On the minus side, the story just wasn't very original and the constant bickering of the young characters became annoying. Also, the alien creature, which we find out was being held against its will and just wanted to go home, lost my sympathy when it decided to start eating the townsfolk. Alice made some offhand comment about the creature being scared and hungry - well, ok, but do you really have to eat the extras?

Perhaps the world is too weary now to go back to 1979 with conviction. Innocence lost? At least most of the film was shot on FILM (Cf. the dvd commentary)! Spielberg's influence no doubt - and anamorphic to boot, a rarity nowadays - I wish I'd gone to see it at the cinema for this reason.

It's an adult ET locked up for a long time, so he's got to defend himself & hurt the human race. Spielberg produced & JJ Abrams directed. This movie is "LOST"

Great movie Stand by Me with a (different) twist on growing up and rites of passage. Excellent images and sound but maybe lost its nerve on the ending and the need to make a buck.

Speilberg trying to relive his youth. Worth a rental but save the movie experience for something better.
