Great movie and great acting from these young actors.
JJ Abrams does a good job of aping the surface elements of Spielberg (adorable moppets staring at the sky in wide-eyed wonder etc) but is let down by a mediocre script that doesn't have anything for its protagonists to do and can't decide whether it's monster is evil or just misunderstood. The child actors are excellent, though.
Great movie, thoroughly enjoyed.
This was a great movie, a bit scary in places but really well done. After you what the features it makes you understand it all the more.
OK enough - bit like 'The Goonies' with a touch of 'Alien' and 'Close Encounters...'
My 12yo's favourite movie of all time. I wish they's had this movie when I was a kid, its Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn meet the aliens; a mighty boy's own adventure with a sweet little girl in it.
Good scary sci-fi for the young teens the extra features are worth a look bit of histroy behind the movie
An OK movie ,a bit long ,one for the young teens
Very good old fashioned cinema master-peace movie
loved it
super loved it
(super 8) loved it. :P
Not a bad movie. It's the movie Stephen King would have written if he didn't already write Stand By Me. Watch it, you'll understand.
Though I didn't think it was great, I thought it was a bold effort from JJ Abrams to pay tribute to Steven Spielberg. If you're a fan of ET, Close Encounters of the Third Kind and War of the Worlds, I'd say it's worth watching.
Also, I found the children were exceptionally good, which is a very, very, very rare thing for me to say.
This film starts of really promising but as it continues pass the amazing train wreck the plot diminishes into a predictable Spielberg cliche. However still an entertaining movie to be enjoyed as an early teen years family movie, some parts will make you jump out of your skin, best with surround sound up high. Similar to the far better "Iron Giant".
Thought it would be a kids movie but really enjoyed it. Definately worth watching.
A sensational movie. The kind of movie I would have treasured had I seen it as a child but was just as mesmerised as an adult. The young actors were brilliant.
Good actio and great train crash to start the movie off.
I didn't realise it was a children's film so it was a little boring
Great Movie. Loved the suspense and the concept. Also it was great how it kept me guessing and didn't show too much to soon. Highly recommend it for adults and children alike.
Excellent acting by Elle Fanning. Love the vintage low-tech setting. Great for kids, actually.
excellent movie action packed keeps you interested
Started off really well, good acting however the last 20 mins gets lost in an over the top American shoot-out that is a bit silly and unbelievable
Brad Pitt was good as always, but apart from that I thought the flic was as boring as it gets. Very little female presence, always a poor point.
Nicely done. Would not watch it again. At first I thought what the heck!? is this a children movie or something. But as it progreses it becomes a bit more serious real fast.
Hard to comprehend that a group of kids actually doing this. Parts were a little hard to wear.
Not a bad flick, fell short of its potential.
Typical Spielberg but a good bit of escapism! Young actors very good and viewers of this age would really enjoy it. Special effects, especially train wreck, very good.
yea didn't mind this for kiddie cast was quiet good to watch
It was an alright movie. Had high expectations of this movie due to highly positive reviews but was disappointed.
Write a review... if you did not like this film you really need to 'lighten up'
Another Spielberg special
This is the brainchild of Hollywood wunderkind, J.J Abrams. But don't let that put you off - look, the guy's written and directed some notable tv and film fodder - but he lost me on... yep, you guessed it - LOST. He didn't know when to give up (incidentally, the greatest mystery on that island revolved around the obese guy who - in spite of food rations - never, ever managed to shake a few kilos off. Simply uncanny. But I digress... ) So Super 8. Simply fantastic. Great story, watchable characters, smart children (not obnoxious) and a story that smacks of the same magic that ET had - looking at the world through the eyes of a child. Fantastic special effects don't take the story over - they complement the tale and actually elevate the movie. A highly engaging, thrilling movie. A must-see for pre-teens too. And the pre-teen at heart.
A good movie to watch with the kids.
I was" conned" by the Positive reviews. This is a MOVIE FOR 10 YEAR OLD'S. Weak, implausible, storyline, extremely predictable, over the top special effects. Wife gave up & went to bed, I should have. Not recommended.
J.J. Abrams continues to demonstrate his skill as a top-knotch director. Elle Fanning outshines everyone in the cast.
JJ Abrams does a Spielberg on us and manipulates us & keeps us constantly guessing almost to the end, in fact it's a very Spielberg film & it's no surprise he exec produced it. It's a great piece of adventure story telling with a good cast. Spoiler alert - The train wreck is fantastic, and the alien is kept very nicely mysterious in appearance & motive until the end. A self conscious movie but a great ride.
Good movie - along the lines of the old Spielberg "group of kids having an adventure" movies, but nicely updated with cool CGI effects
Dreadful couldn't watch it totally unbelievable train crash and seemed to be a very silly story
This is a great original story and the acting was superb from the child cast. however it slowed especially towards the ending which was both disappointing and corny. so much more could come from a movie like this. watch it!
Really enjoyed this. Great movie.
This film is all over the shop; it's what can happen when filmmakers are so engrossed in and infatuated by the commercial results of what they can technically achieve that they ignore or rate as of no importance writing a script with intelligence and credibility.
Really Good Family Movie. Would watch it again! Kids loved it.
I enjoyed this more than I expected to. The plot was fun and the kids were convincing actors. Reckon I'd have loved it when I was 12.
ET turns psycho. For all the hype, turned out to be disappointing.
Top notch movie - watch it, you will enjoy.
Really enjoyed this one, it has been awhile since I have seen a good sci-fi/alian movie and this had good acting from the kids and a good storyline even if a bit predictable with the government/military cover up. Not just the kids film I was expecting. Good evening viewing if you like science fiction.
An enjoyable Spielbergian-type movie with most of the kids acting pretty well. The story was good, although I thought the ending was a bit weak.
great movie . well worth watching
A good sci-fi movieof the standard you can expect from any movie Spielberg was associated with. Not a real big budget film, but well done anyway. Apart from the train crash, which was totally over the top, the special effects were very good, as was the acting from the young actors. We really enjoyed it.
A fantastic and very different movie. The special effects are well done and the cast of young actors really pull it off. Maybe not for the smaller kids but teenagers and up I think will find it very entertaining.
thought this was going to be bit of kids movie, but 15 minutes in and i was hooked.
I'm not one for sci-fi but this flick really takes you on a journey that is somewhat believable - as far as sci-fi flicks go anyway!
While it may be a popcorn film, it surpasses the standard of most films of this kind. The characters and story have greater importance than action and you'll find yourself wishing to see even more of them and less of what typically is viewed as 'cool'. The nostalgie value of this film is also quite high and makes one feel younger and I mean that in the best of ways. The sides of this film depicting filmmaking are also a great touch. Abrams and Spielberg have created what I personally regard to be one of the most entertaining movies out. Highly recommended, especially to Goonies fans.
Predictable, but entertaining.
It was ok. A ET on droids. Seen better sci-fi.
My gosh! This flick is labelled Spielberg all over and i was bored to death. If you like ET perhaps that's the movie for you. For me well I have seen movies like that a million times with all too cliches characters. I enjoyed the beginning but once you realize what you are actually watching ( a flick for 13/14 yo ...a popcorn movie) well you don't really need to keep watching as you know how it's going to end.... With smiles, happy ending, everybody is beautiful and we all love each other.
Wonderful movie and well worth watching. Loved the visual effects of train crash scene. Would have been great on the big screen. Thoroughly recommended.
Great. Something a little different. Edge of your seat at times.
This is a movie for children. Adults will enjoy even more so. I'm 60 and thiis is one of the best movies i've seen. GET IT OUT !!!
Thoroughly enjoyed it rite to the end of the movie!!! Absolutely great effects must of been insane to watch in the cinemas!!!
Great movie. Really enjoyed it.
I hate alien movies - thought this was a bit clever though. I watched it the whole way through and have to say I enjoyed it. Not the best movie of the year but held my attention. Worth watching
JJ Abrams rebooted Star Trek brilliantly. Super 8 proves he can't do kids movies with quite the same panache despite help from Speilberg. The built up suspense at the beginning - wonderful. The movie within a movie - clever. By the end I was yawning and unable to stop throwing things at the screen. The cast of unknowns were uniformly excellent but the gang should have stayed together. That's what all good kids movie's do - they team up to defeat the evil. When it was just down to the one kid, sharing a moment with the alien. P-lease, gag! Plus I always think they can do more with the stoner kid (there is always one and they missed a moment here).
Amazing movie. Everything you come to expect from spielberg and then some more. I found the odd way its filmed a little hard to take (Looks as though it was fimed on a super 8 camera) but other than that it was a great movie.
Very entertaining, unusual & fun movie. My whole family really enjoyed watching this movie. Very Good.
A great storyline which only went somewhere interesting in the last 5 minutes of the movie. Boring.
I really liked this film. Probably because I love Lost etc. It reminded me of a mixture between Stand By Me and Lost. :)
It was a really enjoyable film. I liked it, it was a surprise.
Great Movie - very typical JJ Abrahams...at times I felt like I was watching a LOST episode BUT still really enjoyed it. Good storyline, fun to watch, good balance of emotions and special effects. Would recommend.
Good movie. Very funny - little kids running for their lives!
Great suspense, mystery, action, my older boys loved it especially.
Its not quiet what I remember about super eight films and cameras but fairly close, what the children saw to what was caught on film tells a totally different picture and the story of what the small town sherrif and his town's people what was on the train, so the Government coverup was up to standard. You can see how people come to not trust their Government about what was happening. A good film to see with the kids and show them the past or how you grew up with the super eight film.
Thought it was a kids movie, very pleasantly surprised
This was a good movie. We rewatched the train crash several times. It was awsome.
Enjoyable enough to watch
The set-up to this movie is really great. The kids making the film in the small town in the US: totally engaging. The introduction of the genre element - "what's in the box" - limits the movie. Its a shame. A little too self-conscious, or mechanical, or maybe even cynical.
Alien movies seem to follow two paths: 'the good alien' (although still capable of mass destruction and killing) 'and the bad alien' (as in Alien). Equally the supporting casts in such movies divide into 'the good guys' (susally liberal civilians) and the bad guys (usually military/police/corporate types). Well that's all here. So we need to look past the effects (and the well worn 'plot') and into the main characters: their development; their relationships. And its here that this movie excels. The kids roles (this is a kid's movie) are uniformly well done and with a degree of subtleness that surprises. Their backstory, the making of a zombie movie (and dealing with the politics of moviemaking), is a novel way to allow the young characters to explore aspects of life in a believable manner. The 'misunderstood' alien is a typical Spielberg cliche (although visually well done); the kids roles are the attraction.
Good movie, like the combination of the kids making their own movie with what's happening around them.
I quite enjoyed the acting from the kids. Found that I was waiting for most of the movie to work out what was actually happening. Seemed like the last 20 minutes was where it all happened. The derailment scene was totally over the top.
Action packed. A few unexpected things happened which was enjoyable. kept me watching.
A very good film for adults and kids, with a very real feel (as per the director's homage) to Steven Speilberg's earlier films like ET and Close Encounters....
During the summer of 1979, a group of friends witness a train crash and investigate subsequent unexplained events in their small town. A great film for all ages.
Really enjoyed this film. Good story, action packed effects and great acting by the kids.
Great story, non - stop action packed show with some incredible effects. The doco about making of the movie is also a must to watch - just to see how some of these effects were accomplished.
Such an easily enjoyable film and I loved the nostalgic feel about it. The cast of kids are all superb. Rent this one if you liked the old Spielberg classics Close Encounters, E.T. and Jurassic Park. One star taken off for a stupid ending, though!
Write a review...You have to be 16 years old to like this one - really dreadful.
Awesome if your in to Sci-fi, The modern ET story line done really well.
Very very professionally produced, probably an unlimited budget
Wow, what a great film! Characters were likeable, great special effects. Took me back to childhood films such as E.T and The Goonies. :)
Basically a cute love story with a nasty homesick alien thrown in. The kids, were a bunch of scoundrels making Super 8 movies, but they were a likeable and entertaining bunch of young actors. The alien was mysterious and slow to show himself, sort of like the monster in Cloverfield (same director) but also similar in style to Godzilla's emergence in it's modern remake. The special effects and the sound were awesome, but once you got closeup with the alien you kinda got the feeling you had seen him somewhere before (remember those aliens that harrassed Sigourney Weaver & Arnie!). However, no complaints. Thoroughly entertaining sci-fi fantasy.
An unbelievable storyline here....the special effects look fake. Though we did manage to watch it through.
This is a teenage action movie, it was a fun way to spend Sunday night
Enjoyed the 80's style that reminded me of watching movies as a kid.
Starts off a bit slow, but is very entertaining to watch towards the middle/end. The children act the part very well.
Good movie. Took me back to my early years watching ET. Just wish JJ Abrams would get rid of the camera flares. Know it is his thing, but seriously.
At Last...been a while since I have given a four star rating ..super 8 is a like watching a classic like back to the future,ET or Close encounters but with it's own flavour. How talented is Elle Fanning .. what a little super 8 star she is captivating..good story, great ,great casting and awesome special effects..ticked all the boxes..what a relief
Fantastic movie. Very good acting by the children and had an ET feel about it. Not your average popcorn blockbuster sci-fi.
If you loved the Goonies and miss the feeling, this movie takes you right back to that. Not too complicated, great actors and great effects. A Good one to watch with the kids. the end is a bit too Cliche maybe.
A really good movie. Worth watching.
Not bad but a stupid ending I thought.
This was a really hyped up movie and I wanted to keep an open mind while viewing it because I didn't want to have too high expectations. Turned out this was probably the best approach, because I think I would have been disappointed otherwise. On the plus side, the story had a good heart, the special effects were very impressive and the two young leads who played Joe and Alice had good chemistry and made you care about them. On the minus side, the story just wasn't very original and the constant bickering of the young characters became annoying. Also, the alien creature, which we find out was being held against its will and just wanted to go home, lost my sympathy when it decided to start eating the townsfolk. Alice made some offhand comment about the creature being scared and hungry - well, ok, but do you really have to eat the extras?
Perhaps the world is too weary now to go back to 1979 with conviction. Innocence lost?
At least most of the film was shot on FILM (Cf. the dvd commentary)! Spielberg's influence no doubt - and anamorphic to boot, a rarity nowadays - I wish I'd gone to see it at the cinema for this reason.
It's an adult ET locked up for a long time, so he's got to defend himself & hurt the human race. Spielberg produced & JJ Abrams directed. This movie is "LOST"
i enjoyed this start to finish, all the characters were engaging and just an entertaining flick which both youngsters and oldies can enjoy togethor..very good and i give it a 8 outta 10
Great movie Stand by Me with a (different) twist on growing up and rites of passage. Excellent images and sound but maybe lost its nerve on the ending and the need to make a buck.
Speilberg trying to relive his youth. Worth a rental but save the movie experience for something better.
