This movie is ok if you are into space movies.
This movie has stuck with me since I saw it a few years back, well worth a look.
Meh.
Nice premise. Nice that they didn't sell out in the ending. Nice visuals but not really a film you carry with you for long.
Might say something about the general lack of action for what should have been an action-film that I really wanted some romance between the two lead characters just to give the film some dimension.
As it was it kind of had that whole Aliens/Abyss thing going on (picking off the cast one by one) with none of the gasp-factor.
This one shines as dimly as the dying sun they're trying to save.
not bad but you must keep watching it or you will loose the plot
Not a bad rainy day watching movie. A mixture of dramatic moments and surprise enough to keep you interested
great science fiction. Quite bleak but well don
Big fan of the genre and this wasnt a let down. Didnt find it cheap or poorly edited as some have previously mentioned. Good cast, story, effects, production etc. Thoroughly enjoyed the ending which combined, questioned and displayed elements of both religion and science. Thought provoking.
A movie I would watch on tv but not in cinemas. Felt like a cheap attempt to alter simular movies like armageddon.
not what I thought it would be
This had the potential to be excellent but ended up ok
A pathetic excuse to try and take us interstellar.
It could have been so good. The post production cut and paste has disconnected the story, put some obvious joining bandaids in and crippled a potential visual masterpiece.
Hmm, how do you get a huge budget for a movie, lots of cgi, some very interesting set design and then does it all goes pear shaped on the cutting room floor? The post production cut and paste has disconnected the story, put some obvious joining bandaids in and crippled a potential visual masterpiece. The Greenaway stylised strong colour washed sets were great and ticked the arthouse box, but so many other elements crippled this movie. I watched to the end and felt that it could have been just so much better, if I had made it. :-) Guess you will just have to watch it and decide for yourself.
i expected so much better of this movie. for 1 you don't get to properly see the main lunatic. 2 it really was weird how some characters were burnt on the observation deck, whilst others could just shield their eyes and be fine. 3 there was so many things that the characters did that were wrong. 4 who builds a window into a green house traveling to the sun? 5 the way they turned the ship should have meant the antenna would have been burnt from the other side away from the oh so conveniently placed window that allowed the sun rays to reflect of the antenna as it turned and go through the window and burn the greenhouse. 6 how the fuck does someone survive having a blade stabbed through their neck?
There is soo much more that was wrong with this movie. but to put it simply this movie coulda been done a lot better
Interesting Plot. Sci fi to horror movie? good al the same.
Not as enthralling as some of the other movies with a similar premise, but it was enjoyable.
So exciting I fell asleep!!
This was so bad! The plot was totally illogical and difficult to follow. Even my SciFi keen husband struggled to see it through.
Don't be tempted to add this one to your Queue! It'll be a couple of hours of your life that you can never get back.
Absolutely woeful, and oh so predictable.
I really enjoyed this movie. I liked the character development and the plot. I don't usually watch science fiction but after this movie I will watch more. As other reviewers have said, watch it with an open mind and suspend belief.
started out something awesome and turned out a good film but could have been so much more. the third act with the monster/alien runied it but the other acts were good and i did like the cast.
Forgettable sci-fi that failed to create any real sense of drama or interest in any of the characters.
Great idea really good first half, strangely changes from a thoughtful movie into a horror thing towards the end.
I like sci-fi but not this one. Disappointing.
I'm sorry what......? This is Danny Boyle trying to be way too clever and leaving out huge gaps in the story making it really hard to understand what the hell is going on. It's far more entertaining to watch the movie with the Prof Brian Cox commentary track playing. I learnt more from him than in my entire 5 years of Physics.
This movie just did not make a lot of sense
Goodness, even good old Cliff Curtis couldn't save this. I felt like the characters spent the entire movie debating who was the most valuable so therefore should not be left to die.
I managed to sit through this only because I was very tired and couldn't be bothered leaving. If you can accept the ludicrous premise (astronauts fly to the sun to deposit a bomb that will kick start its dying throes back to life) and hang in there, it becomes very dark and surreal. However, I've seen it all before dating back nearly 40 years. This movie rolls together "Space Odyssey" and the little known (but excellent) "Dark Star" with just a pinch of "Alien". But my wife and 18 year old liked it.
I was really looking forward to this movie being a bit of a Sci Fi nut. Great story and props. That is for the first 80%. Then there was the ridiculous ending that really spoilt it for me.
Ponderous and annoying, I kinda expected more from Danny Boyle. Definitely visually beautiful, especially the creepiness of Icarus 1, but seemed to be missing something. Cliff Curtis was great as the psychiatrist slowly going loopy himself and Hiroyuki Sanada as the heroic ship's captain, but a lot of the other cast seemed bland and uninteresting. Nice shot of Sydney at the end though
I loved this until 3/4 of the way through and then lost interest in the spiritual aspects of it. Nice ending though. Much much better than I expected. Oh to be able to travel to other planets and survive the journey!. Great solid acting from all main characters. A must-see for true sci-fi fans. Fantastic to see an intelligent, well-directed sci fi movie without aliens blasting humans (as quite a few of the other reviewers have also noted).
Awesome sci-fi cinematography - just as expected from from Danny Boyle. Screenplay is ok, can be better. Overall, I enjoyed it.
Quite disappointing and waste of time
Started reasonably well with good anticipation but then lost its way when unexplained things started to happen. Quickly collapsed like a black star.
Great Sci-fi movie and effects
Would have to be one of the silliest movies I've ever seen.
On one level this movie worked really well in that it successfully depicted the physical dangers of a voyage to the sun. However, it was less successful when dealing the danger in our midst story which was predictable. The Solaris approach would have been better in this context.
great first half, lust visuals, and sound. but the last 30 mins is pure rubbish.
The potential of this film was better than the reality. I liked the parts that focussed on the psychology of the people on the ship and their relationships with each other and the way they approached difficult decisions. But these parts were a bit too scarce for the film to be really good. There were lots of "filler" sequences of equipment and people floating about in space and lovely but ultimately boring shots of the sun. In the end the whole story could have been told in half an hour. There was some decent acting, particularly from Cillian Murphy, but the actors played second fiddle to the increasingly silly effects and unbelievable plot.
Excellent cinematography and soundtrack. Reasonable story and concept with a decent script and some good acting performances. I think exploring the awesome power of the sun is what makes this a little different to your usual run of the mill sci fi movie.
Clearly anyone can get a job as an astronaut in the future. They don't work real well under pressure these ones, and the appearance of Freddie Kruger just didn't work.
a great movie, story is good with great effects
Watch this is you like to be disappointed. Well set up and then it just turns ridiculous.
Interesting story line, but I found the movie disjointed & slow
One of the worst movies to be ever released
Better than expected - although the ending was a little over the top!
What a weird movie.. takes a while to catch on what's going on... but the ending is the weirdest of all...
The topic of the movie certainly has potential, but it hasn't been made into one of those mainstream hollywood flicks, so maybe that's the reason why it's a bit hard to grasp.
This is an extremely enjoyable and reasonably scientifically sound movie up until about the 100 minute mark where everything turns to crap. Why o why o why o why... it was so good until this point!!
Poor plot development. No cohesion between scenes. Too many silly tricks with camera angles, common with many directors today. One of the three worst movies ever made.
Viewed with an open mind, It's the best movie I've seen in a long while - maybe since Life is Beautiful. But then I like my movies to be different.
A spectacular looking movie, well made and an inspiring story that's like life itself.
A great space flick. Don't expect aliens exploding in a barage of laser fire, but someone who likes suspense and originality in their scripts as well as good acting to back it up, then this is a must.
It had the potential to be a good movie but I think they were trying too hard & added things that didn't add to the story.
Starts off pretty slow and crappy but actually turns out to be a good movie
Far too long, too silly even for the kids!
Good effects, pretty compelling plot - with a twist. Sci-fi rating 4.
I thought this movie was pretty good... It certainly makes you think twice about the sun after viewing!
Very slow, and didn't make much sense.
Excellent contemporary Sci-fi...intelligent story/script and great fx.
Started off ok but just got worse and worse as the film went on. It got really stupid in the end!
Great for lovers of sciencefiction fans. The actors are good. Just a little slow paced but it makes up for that at the end.
Not bad actually. Different storyline and some good performances
WASN'T VERY WELL DONE BUT GREAT STORY SO I KEPT WATCHING. DISAPPOINTING PRODUCTION STORY HAD MORE POTENTIAL.
This was a real surprise for me. I thought overall it was excellent. Some truely gripping moments.
had potential. the beginning was good. but 2nd half was muddled
This movie dragged on and on and on and on. Do yourself a favour and stear clear of this movie. It just doesn't make sense.
We thought it was a bit of a let down. Was boring and predictable at times.
A very solid film but not as good as it could have been.
Much better than Danny Boyle's previous offerings like "The Beach" or "A Life Less Ordinary".
Michelle Yeoh, Hiroyuki Sanada and Rose Bryne own this film.
A little disappointing...
Quite good tho very much like "Event Horizon" as far as overall story goes.Top FX
Takes a long time to get to any real action, and then it just gets weird. It might suit somebodys taste but not mine. I've seen better. Even the first page of deleted scenes is boring not hard to see why they were cut. A waste of time to watch.
Really interesting great sci-fi movie I think most people will enjoy.
I watched 6 times, and didn't want to send it back.
This is very adult sci-fi as it should be - stunning effects, good use of technology, very thematic, nervous/tense plot. So much effort on the score, sets, characters, its a real treat. It does take a bit from Event Horizon and the Solaris remake. Its also the odd reliance on humans to do so many things that would in reality be automated, especially where advanced AI is present -still this is necessary to keep the plot going and allow a high enough body count!
most depressing film to watch, poor acting, not a happy moment in this one, decided to switch off before the finish and take the dog for a walk (better idea)
Great futuristic sci-fi drama with great concepts. It makes you question what our race would do if we were coming to the end.
nearly the worst movie i have seen.
Good movie for the whole family. Lost of action good thriller too.
confused drivel......if special effects and overwhelming sound levels are enough for you, then perhaps you'll feel less than wholly disappointed...I'm so glad I didn't pay for cinema seats.
This movie was a little slow to start but got better. Its worth a watch.
Best of science fiction - Impeccably devised and executed with mesmerising detail.
Great effects, but as others have already said, lots borrowed from other films. I got quite bored towards the end and missed the last part of it (on purpose) - so did all my friends with me who were also bored. I guess its a DVD when you've got nothing else to borrow and want to see the pretty lights.
A good sci-fi lots of creepy surprises.
This movie is completely different from the normal sci-fi genre. I enjoyed the special effects and georgeous views of space and beyond. Worth watching if you are into something a little different.
great movie i enjoyed it!
If you are a hard core SF fan and the choice was between this and "The Blob", you would watch it. Not great but the story line is certainly different and it is passable for SF entertainment.
Riveting story. Stunning cinematography. See it!
Part sci-fi, part phsychological thriller. Interesting premise as the backbone of the story, that the sun is dying and we have a chance to restart it and save humanity, and that it's not technology that's the biggest hurdle, but the human psyche.
Very dissapointing thought it would be much better - near the end it just became confusing and predictable! It started out well and could have been much better.
The worst movie I have ever seen.
If there was 1/2 star I would give it that. Don't waste your time!
A frustrating plot development in the final 1/3 of the movie takes the lustre of what was a very good film.
Still definitely worth watching, particularly for the beautiful visuals and excellent mounting tension of the first half.
I really want to kick the director for ruining something that was so good.
Not suitable for people expecting lots of action.
Sorry couldn't get into this one
Loved the tense thrill of this film in a very realistic possible future "climate changeing" world - very well acted with moral delimmers providing substance
So dull I couldn't get myself to even finish it.
A 'try hard' movie trying to follow the steps of others; The Core, Deep Inpact etc.
That's just my personal opinion though (not being my favourite movie type)... If you like unrealistic sci fi style disasters you'll probably enjoy it.
Watch it with an open mind, you won't be disappointed.
It was very slow to begin with but was excellent towards the end
Expected much more from this movie. Had moments of Deja Vu prior to realising the movie seemed to ripped off so many other Sci Fi movies. The characters were never really established due to a rushed and overzealous plot. Special effects were also sub-standard.
Really enjoyed this movie.
Someone forgot to turn the lights on with this one. It just never got interesting. I said to my partner after it that humanity deserves to die when they make movies like this.
Ok, the whole premise that anything we could build may be able to kick start the sun again is pretty far fetched, but this movie seems to start nowhere and end even more obscurely. I think the writer/ directors dosage of psychodelic enhancers increased as the plot progressed.
Um ... just OK. Best for fans of Sci Fi, otherwise you may be bored.
Good special effects but that's about it. Watch Event Horizon & 2001 which are both much better and have been heavily "borrowed from" for this film.
Had lots of Sci - Fi realities in this movie, loved the twists and turns in it also. A good movie to see.
Disappointing, thought this might be along the lines of Armageddon or Final Impact or even Aliens, but it wasn't any thing like those. Wasn't impressed. Sorry.
A misfire from our Danny - perhaps he's gone off the boil and his one contribution to cinema was Trainspotting
We only got through half of this movie. SOO SLOW! Beautiful visual effects, but that was about it. The plot didn't seem to be going anywhere good, and the characters weren't developing. Couldn't get into it.
Terrific sci fi well managed and BEAUTIFUL to look at.
It takes a couple of viewings to get into this movie, but in the end an okay movie and it has Rose Byrne in it also.
boring boring boring.... It started off to be quite good, but dragged on and on. the plot seemed to get lost towards the end. The ending was disappointing...
A good movie, keeps you on your seat!!
Who invented this movie? Definitely not my cup of tea. Really one for the science fiction fans out there.
A good film that, in the spirit of true Sci-Fi, explores concepts of God, creation, human existence and self-sacrifice. But 2001: A Space Odyssey it's not. This is a shame as all the elements for an intelligent and intimate film were there. It could have been a solar version of The Big Blue. Visual and aural effects are haunting. The lonely transit of Mercury is highlight.
LOW ON SPECIAL EFFECTS FOR A MOVIE OF THIS PRESENT TIME, NOT WORTH WATCHING UNLESS LIKE MOST SCI FI FANS DESPERATE FOR NEW RELEASES !
Excellent movie. Some beautiful scenes. Poignant at times but never sentimental. Awesome, and sometimes beautiful, score.
Long, tedious and definitely not worth sitting through for the ending.
If you have seen Horizon Point, this is exactly the same. I won't recite the similarities as that will spoil it for those who still want to see it or have not seen Horizon Point. Space disaster with a twist of mutant psycho.
Sunshine is certainly an interesting movie. Slowly paced, beautifully filmed,
well-acted and great sets, but overall it?s missing something essential. I liked
the international nature of the crew and it did seem to reflect a real future
scenario. However, I couldn?t seem to connect with the characters. After a
while into the film I realised I had no idea of their names and that other than
Michelle Yeoh?s character, I really had no idea about them as people. I don?t
require an explanatory voice-over, but in this movie I don?t think the concepts
were fully explored ? unless those bits ended up on the cutting room floor.
The fateful nature of the trip came across, but why the captain of the earlier
ship went all mystical/crazy about worshipping the sun to the point where he
was willing to kill people he knew and the earth ? well, that eludes me. I think
it did need some drama of this nature, but it just didn?t quite work for me. All
that being said, I?m still glad to have seen it.
Spectacular special effects can't carry this movie. Several scenes were so confusing I had to rewind to try and figure out what was going on. Some camerawork is irritating. Then it all gets silly towards the end. Not terrible, but a good script would've made it wonderful.
Gets better as is goes along.
Another derivative hotch-potch that tries to say more than it actually does. Beware the space madness.
Had all the makings of something special, even with a great cast something just went wrong, Instead of building tension towards the end it felt rushed as though they just had to finish the movie. Disappointing.
Great story idea however goes off on a tangent and follows the recipe of another movie.
First rate sci fi. A momentous, human, spiritual, science-story. Looks gorgeous and the climax has to be seen to be believed.
A fairly slowish movie to get started with a reasonable plot, some of the cinematography is incredible, special effects are great.
Overall, worth a watch good ending to the movie.
potential plus, didn't quite make it for me
4 Stars for photography ,music and effects, but with the appearance of Pinbacker the story line deteriorates into a standard one star sci-fi/ fantasy film - more's the pity - it was going so well. The unlikely addition of Pinbacker turns the film's story in a different and "often seen before" scary creature movie direction.
The film's interesting philosophy and science could still have been conveyed in an exciting and meaningful way without resorting to this device.
Worth watching the commentary by physicist Cox for an explanation of the film, as the now, and unfortunately common, apallingly distorted dialogue prevents you keeping up with the plot unless you have the subtitles on. I probably clearly heard about 40-50% of the dialogue.
