Meh. Nice premise. Nice that they didn't sell out in the ending. Nice visuals but not really a film you carry with you for long. Might say something about the general lack of action for what should have been an action-film that I really wanted some romance between the two lead characters just to give the film some dimension. As it was it kind of had that whole Aliens/Abyss thing going on (picking off the cast one by one) with none of the gasp-factor. This one shines as dimly as the dying sun they're trying to save.

Big fan of the genre and this wasnt a let down. Didnt find it cheap or poorly edited as some have previously mentioned. Good cast, story, effects, production etc. Thoroughly enjoyed the ending which combined, questioned and displayed elements of both religion and science. Thought provoking.

It could have been so good. The post production cut and paste has disconnected the story, put some obvious joining bandaids in and crippled a potential visual masterpiece.

Hmm, how do you get a huge budget for a movie, lots of cgi, some very interesting set design and then does it all goes pear shaped on the cutting room floor? The post production cut and paste has disconnected the story, put some obvious joining bandaids in and crippled a potential visual masterpiece. The Greenaway stylised strong colour washed sets were great and ticked the arthouse box, but so many other elements crippled this movie. I watched to the end and felt that it could have been just so much better, if I had made it. :-) Guess you will just have to watch it and decide for yourself.

i expected so much better of this movie. for 1 you don't get to properly see the main lunatic. 2 it really was weird how some characters were burnt on the observation deck, whilst others could just shield their eyes and be fine. 3 there was so many things that the characters did that were wrong. 4 who builds a window into a green house traveling to the sun? 5 the way they turned the ship should have meant the antenna would have been burnt from the other side away from the oh so conveniently placed window that allowed the sun rays to reflect of the antenna as it turned and go through the window and burn the greenhouse. 6 how the fuck does someone survive having a blade stabbed through their neck? There is soo much more that was wrong with this movie. but to put it simply this movie coulda been done a lot better

I'm sorry what......? This is Danny Boyle trying to be way too clever and leaving out huge gaps in the story making it really hard to understand what the hell is going on. It's far more entertaining to watch the movie with the Prof Brian Cox commentary track playing. I learnt more from him than in my entire 5 years of Physics.

I managed to sit through this only because I was very tired and couldn't be bothered leaving. If you can accept the ludicrous premise (astronauts fly to the sun to deposit a bomb that will kick start its dying throes back to life) and hang in there, it becomes very dark and surreal. However, I've seen it all before dating back nearly 40 years. This movie rolls together "Space Odyssey" and the little known (but excellent) "Dark Star" with just a pinch of "Alien". But my wife and 18 year old liked it.

Ponderous and annoying, I kinda expected more from Danny Boyle. Definitely visually beautiful, especially the creepiness of Icarus 1, but seemed to be missing something. Cliff Curtis was great as the psychiatrist slowly going loopy himself and Hiroyuki Sanada as the heroic ship's captain, but a lot of the other cast seemed bland and uninteresting. Nice shot of Sydney at the end though

I loved this until 3/4 of the way through and then lost interest in the spiritual aspects of it. Nice ending though. Much much better than I expected. Oh to be able to travel to other planets and survive the journey!. Great solid acting from all main characters. A must-see for true sci-fi fans. Fantastic to see an intelligent, well-directed sci fi movie without aliens blasting humans (as quite a few of the other reviewers have also noted).

On one level this movie worked really well in that it successfully depicted the physical dangers of a voyage to the sun. However, it was less successful when dealing the danger in our midst story which was predictable. The Solaris approach would have been better in this context.

The potential of this film was better than the reality. I liked the parts that focussed on the psychology of the people on the ship and their relationships with each other and the way they approached difficult decisions. But these parts were a bit too scarce for the film to be really good. There were lots of "filler" sequences of equipment and people floating about in space and lovely but ultimately boring shots of the sun. In the end the whole story could have been told in half an hour. There was some decent acting, particularly from Cillian Murphy, but the actors played second fiddle to the increasingly silly effects and unbelievable plot.

This is very adult sci-fi as it should be - stunning effects, good use of technology, very thematic, nervous/tense plot. So much effort on the score, sets, characters, its a real treat. It does take a bit from Event Horizon and the Solaris remake. Its also the odd reliance on humans to do so many things that would in reality be automated, especially where advanced AI is present -still this is necessary to keep the plot going and allow a high enough body count!

A good film that, in the spirit of true Sci-Fi, explores concepts of God, creation, human existence and self-sacrifice. But 2001: A Space Odyssey it's not. This is a shame as all the elements for an intelligent and intimate film were there. It could have been a solar version of The Big Blue. Visual and aural effects are haunting. The lonely transit of Mercury is highlight.

LOW ON SPECIAL EFFECTS FOR A MOVIE OF THIS PRESENT TIME, NOT WORTH WATCHING UNLESS LIKE MOST SCI FI FANS DESPERATE FOR NEW RELEASES !

Excellent movie. Some beautiful scenes. Poignant at times but never sentimental. Awesome, and sometimes beautiful, score.

Long, tedious and definitely not worth sitting through for the ending.

If you have seen Horizon Point, this is exactly the same. I won't recite the similarities as that will spoil it for those who still want to see it or have not seen Horizon Point. Space disaster with a twist of mutant psycho.

Sunshine is certainly an interesting movie. Slowly paced, beautifully filmed, well-acted and great sets, but overall it?s missing something essential. I liked the international nature of the crew and it did seem to reflect a real future scenario. However, I couldn?t seem to connect with the characters. After a while into the film I realised I had no idea of their names and that other than Michelle Yeoh?s character, I really had no idea about them as people. I don?t require an explanatory voice-over, but in this movie I don?t think the concepts were fully explored ? unless those bits ended up on the cutting room floor. The fateful nature of the trip came across, but why the captain of the earlier ship went all mystical/crazy about worshipping the sun to the point where he was willing to kill people he knew and the earth ? well, that eludes me. I think it did need some drama of this nature, but it just didn?t quite work for me. All that being said, I?m still glad to have seen it.

Spectacular special effects can't carry this movie. Several scenes were so confusing I had to rewind to try and figure out what was going on. Some camerawork is irritating. Then it all gets silly towards the end. Not terrible, but a good script would've made it wonderful.

Another derivative hotch-potch that tries to say more than it actually does. Beware the space madness.

Had all the makings of something special, even with a great cast something just went wrong, Instead of building tension towards the end it felt rushed as though they just had to finish the movie. Disappointing.

Great story idea however goes off on a tangent and follows the recipe of another movie.

First rate sci fi. A momentous, human, spiritual, science-story. Looks gorgeous and the climax has to be seen to be believed.

A fairly slowish movie to get started with a reasonable plot, some of the cinematography is incredible, special effects are great. Overall, worth a watch good ending to the movie.

4 Stars for photography ,music and effects, but with the appearance of Pinbacker the story line deteriorates into a standard one star sci-fi/ fantasy film - more's the pity - it was going so well. The unlikely addition of Pinbacker turns the film's story in a different and "often seen before" scary creature movie direction. The film's interesting philosophy and science could still have been conveyed in an exciting and meaningful way without resorting to this device. Worth watching the commentary by physicist Cox for an explanation of the film, as the now, and unfortunately common, apallingly distorted dialogue prevents you keeping up with the plot unless you have the subtitles on. I probably clearly heard about 40-50% of the dialogue.
