Tobi and Achim have been best friends for years. As cox and oarsman, they have helped their team win several rowing cups in the past and are now looking forward to the big regatta in the countryside.

But, this trip is no summer camp and the first problems soon arise.

As Achim's relationship with his girlfriend grows more serious, Tobi starts to realise that his feelings for Achim run deeper than he's willing to admit to himself. He feels confused, unsure of himself and increasingly left out.

When the much-anticipated Berlin girls' team is being replaced by a team of athletic, clich-bursting young gay men, Tobi and his teammates are suddenly forced to grapple with their prejudices, their fears, and, perhaps, their hidden longings.

As the tension grows, Tobi, Achim and the others head towards a confrontation as fierce and ultimately as liberating as the summer storm gathering over the lake...

The rowing teams for a number of schools have all camped out around this lake where they train and practise for a few days before the big competition. The arrival of an out and proud, all gay rowing team, ruffles a few feathers with the other teams. During all this, the main character is dealing with his feelings for his best friend. This is a lot better than most American school camp / weekend movies. Thoroughly enjoyed this film and definitely recommend it.

‘Summer Strom’ is engaging, honest but predictable. It is worth watching as the performances, dialogue and location are, on the whole, terrific. A coming of age, coming out movie that manages to convince without the cringe factor that unfortunately afflicts many in the genre. I particularly liked its pace, and I don’t recall a scene that was too long or unnecessary. It has sharp dialogue with mostly believable performances; several characters in the ‘gay team’ were stereotypical, which detracted from other more convincing performances.

This will prove to be an 'evergreen' in gay coming out titles. A simple but effective story told with humour and respect. European gay titles are always a cut above the average (and most are average) US stuff and this is a further cut above again. Robert Stadlober has gone on to make several other impressive movies. One to watch.

If only it had subtitles! I wish they could have this information with the film synopsis. A possible 4 or 5 star rating if you speak German!

Summer Storm exceded my expectations. The comedy element to this film balances out nicely all the teenage angst experienced by the main characters. If you are a gay teenager/young adult, then you will definitely love this film. There are a few annoying moments in the film where I wanted to slap one of the main characters, but it didn't ruin the film for me. Nicely shot, very watchable. I highly recommend Summer Storm to anybody coming to terms with their sexuality. 8/10.

I really enjoyed this film! It would have been even better in English but having the english subtitles made it just as enjoyable! Good story, and movie but not for all!

Excellent movie. A coming of age film that is well written. There are some heart breaking scenes as well as funny ones. I do wonder though if I would have enjoyed this as much if it were an American film.

Not a bad film, subtitled very quickly and dialogue is sometimes missed but message is delivered. Young gay love coming out and stresses involved.

A sensitively approached story covering the destructive effects of anti-gay prejudice on both straight and gay teenagers. The visual metaphors are many and at times a bit obvious, but overall a great film that all young people should see.

Summerstorm is an excellent german movie. The movie quality is that you'd see in any A grade English movies. The movie deals with teenage angst, coming of age and coming out and thus sexuality. The movie does a good job of staying clear of peverseness or of too many cliches that usually accompanies sexuality. The movie is set in the Bavarian countryside which concentrates the your attention on the relationships. This movie has it all; comedy, romance, drama and tragedy. Excellent movie.

An interesting story of a young teenager discovering and accepting about his sexuality. Though somewhat slow, the actors are to be commended on their performances of a difficult and sensitive issue for many of todays young. Worth a look.

I considered Summer Storm to be a good companion movie to the latest hits Brokeback Mountain and Transamerica. The movie explored awakening homosexuality and its effect on those involved. As far as teen movies go, this one had more depth than the usual fare and the acting was above average. I enjoyed it and found it stepped over some normal cinema boundaries.

Essentially, its a sweet German (English subtitled) gay coming of age type movie that follows the (sadly too well worn) theme of a guy infatuated with his straight school mate. But its entertaining and the characters interesting enough to keep you hooked, and not just for their looks. And the ending uplifting enough to make it worth the watch.
