‘State of Play’ is a ‘conspiracy’ film pitting the hard a working but cynical journalist against the big end of town. It is a good thriller with good performances and very well directed. Somewhat predictable script but it does contain surprises.
Really loved this movie. Has not dated at all.
good story , good acting , worth watching if you haven't seen it.
Will rate this when we get the new copy as original kept stopping. But what we did see of it was quite good
Couldn't watch this ,it played up during the film.Didn't bother
Russell Crowe at his best
always enjoy a Russell Crowe movie and this one was good right until the end.
Gripping thriller. Highly recommended.
The DVD was faulty and I did nto get to see the whole movie!!
I had forgotten I'd seen it previously (when it first came out), so obviously didn't leave a big impression but I did enjoy seeing it again.
This is not a review but an observation. The movie freeze in some part while we are watching it, so we are not sure if we missed some part of it. Please make sure that the movie you send has no problem. Thanks a lot.
a good story shows how good russel crow can perform, a story about a american diplomate, who shows he is squeeky clean, and a friend of russel crow who is a reporter, and underneath the diplomate has other dealings which are not exactely on the straight and norrow
Interesting with enough intrigue to keep you watching, but will I remember it tomorrow.................probably not.
A team of investigative reporters work alongside a police detective to try to solve the murder of a congressman's mistress. Good all round effort. Not an Affleck fan but he was very good in this
Average films are soon forgotten, and this is one of those. I didn't like the plot... reminded me of Superman working for the Daily Planet and then saving the day...
We enjoyed this movie, but were a little let down with the ending, it would have been nice if they had included the reactions after the event.
Very very good - well cast, solid storyline.
I was looking forward to this movie as it sounded good, but I found it too slow and boring and Im not a fan of Russell Crowe, the other actors were fine but it wasnt so good that I slept through most of it
Russell Crowe is reason enough to keep track of his offerings. It seems many a movie is becoming so bogged down in complacated plots, twists and turns that, instead of enjoyment, they become a brain teaser. That's what crosswords are for.
Great movie, Action packed, suspense- Russel Crowe
A really refreshing political drama. A film that shows that car chases, explosions and distracting surround sound are not at all necessary in the production of a first class film. A great collection of actors make this thoughtful script work well.
A very good political thriller. I didn't think Ben Affleck was great in his role, but the rest of the cast is quite good. Didn't Rusty beef up for this role? But it suits the character and he plays it really well. Supported ably by the gorgeous Amy Adams, and the equally gorgeous Helen Mirren as his editor. Fast paced and intriguing.
Enjoyable. Russell Crowe very good. Couple of interesting twists. Better than average for this genre.
Russell Crowe is excellent in this and Ben Affleck also plays very well. A nice political thriller easy to compare to ALL PRESIDENT'S MEN. I am not a big fan of the genre because most of those flicks have got pages of dialogues as thick as the bible however State Of Play is different. It's got a couple of interesting twists and few cool thrilling scenes.
Really enjoyed it and you should too.
I could catch glimpses of the original TV serial but this was easier to follow - well, it would have to be, being as the setting was 'transported' from England to the US and the storyline considerably simplified. Not a particularly tense drama but enjoyable - the 'guest' appearance of Helen Mirren pumped life into a somewhat flagging script.
Do yourself a favour and rent the original BBC TV series!!!
GREAT MOVIE! Couldn't wait to see where it went. Highly recommend this one.
Superior conspiracy drama that doesn't go over the top like many of these types of films with car chases and highly improbable plots. Solid performances by all. 3.5 stars
Tense, enthralling film with good performances all around. Really enjoyable.
A long haired Russel Crowe plays a laid back newspaper reporter who, along with aspiring partner (Rachael McAdams) discover a mind blowing big money plot involving high up government officials and company set-ups to embezzle billions. I found this movie intriguing and entertaining. Although not brilliant the performances are sound and believable. Jeff Daniels is an interesting choice as a crooked high ranking government official.
Not a big Russell Crowe fan but I absolutely loved this movie, one to watch! Lots of drama, twists and top cast!
I can get confused in movies like this, but not this time. Terrific cast and I was totally caught up in it and entertained.
Great movie with enough there to keep you glued to the screen with its twists and turns. Good performances by all involved.
Both my husband and I thought this was a terrific political thriller. Thoroughly enjoyable and engaging.
State of Play was a truly fantastic film, a wonderful mix of intrigue and drama with more than a bit of humour thrown in. I can not fault any of the performances, but thought that Russel Crow and Helen Mirrin were stand outs... and Jason Bateman was a great surprise package in his role. The only not so fantastic performance was Ben Affleck, BUT having said that it is only in comparison to the brilliant performance of almost everyone else.
Good film. Ben Affleck is watchable. Russell Crowe is very good as always. He really is a great actor. Doesnt always choose the tough hard man roles. Helen Mirrin is excellent
This would have been an entertaining, though convoluted, thriller - except that the plot device on which the whole endgame is based makes absolutely no sense whatsoever! It's a complete cop-out with the main protagonist (Crowe) putting 2 2 together and coming up with "lightbulb". Ruined the whole movie for me, I'm afraid.
Whatever one might think of Russell Crowe, in this thriller he is brilliant. And as in all good thrillers, there are plenty of unexpected twists in the story. The scenario is feasible enough to seem real, albeit unlikely. Russell Crowe doesn't sound like and American, but not like an Aussie either - except in the 'Making of' feature, which is well worth watching. As for Helen Mirren she is unmistakably British, which seems a bit unlikely heading up an American newspaper in Washington. But those are minor quibbles about an enjoyable movie.
i thought i wasn't going to like this film but in the end i did and it shows why Russell Crowe is still the best actor in hollywood. i liked the story and mystery and even ben affleck who has been good since his comeback in the directors chair with Gone Baby Gone. just a great film.
I was dissappointed in this film it had a good cast and I expected a lot more. I thought it was a bad dvd transfer because of the mumbling and sound, so I played with the audio the whole movie through. I was able to leave the dvd on and make a tea etc., without pausing it. Nothing happened for ages, it was slow, boring and predictable I felt like I was watching a conglomeration of scripts "done before". I agree with all the comments from the member reviews of Micfitz, Purple Sue, and Myke all their comments were valid.
